Animal Profile

Ichigo

Hello, my name is Ichigo. My animal id is #219041. I am a male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 1/21/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal circumstance - rescued from neglect.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Ichigo is at risk due to behavioral concerns. He was brought to the Care Center because of behavior issues in the home. While playing outside with his owner, Ichigo bit and held onto his owner's arm and sleeve, but maintained a loose body posture. When he let go, he left red marks, but there was no broken skin. Ichigo has been friendly with the resident children, but recently began growling at the younger child in the home. During his stay at the Care Center, Ichigo has shown similar fearful, defensive behaviors. He was observed with a tense, low body posture, hard barking and growling at handlers. However, he has started warming up to certain handlers and accepting treats. Medically, Ichigo apparently healthy.

In the Care Centers, Ichigo appears fearful and has been observed to hard bark and growl, but he's been accepting treats and warming up to the staff. His owner described him as a social, affectionate, and playful dog who loves dinosaur Kongs. Ichigo would do best in an adult-only foster home through a New Hope Partner that can manage his behavior with positive reinforcement training.

Summary:: 1/28/25: Ichigp greets another dog at the gate with neutral body and wagging tail. He is focused on the other dog whining.

Summary (6):: 2/8/25: Ichigo is standing at the front of his kennel with neutral body. He is easily leashed and removed from kennel. He is slightly anxious waiting for and being in the elevator, pacing back and forth on the leash. He is walked on the street where he pulls from spot to spot to sniff. When returning to the building, he pulls hard forward, whining, unresponsive to handler. He returns to kennel without issue. 1/25/25: Ichigo is at the front of his kennel barking softly as handler approaches. As handler unlocks and opens the kennel door to leash, Ichigo attempts to push hard out of the kennel with his head. He is leashed while pushing and taken to the street for a walk. Ichigo is hyper vigilant during his walk and will stop and stare at people or noises he sees/hears from afar. He will walk past people without issue besides one person he attempts to approach and sniff towards the end of his walk. He stops to use the bathroom while outside and walks with a neutral body posture. He is offered treats and accepts them, and after walking for a bit more he is brought back inside. Ichigo allows handler to clip him and he is brought back to kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 1/24/25: Ichigo is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He jumps up on the door whining as handler attempts to leash him. He is not interested in treats. Eventually he is able to be leashed and taken outside for walk. While leaving out the kennel room, he had a low tense body and would hard stare at the second handler following as he got closer. He would stop walking and turn around with a low stiff body and continuously stare at the handler following. He barked at the people that were walking passed and would bark randomly outside due to being uncomfortable. He would explore around with a tense body frame and stand up tall when he saw a person coming by with their hood on. He stopped walking and hard stared at the handler following after crossing the street to head back. Before heading inside, he started to pull towards a dog that was coming out first. The handler had to apply leash pressure and lift him up to place him back into his kennel. 1/23/25: Ichigo is standing at the front of the kennel, neutral body. He barks once as handler offers treats. Another handler offers chicken of which he eats. He remains at the front as handler unlocks the kennel and presents the leash. He sniffs the leash then stops taking treats. He attempts to push his nose out of the crate of the door. Handler is able to get the loop over his head but he backs out of it. This is repeated a few times before the leash can be secured. He comes out of kennel readily but walks down the hall with low body. He looks back at the second handler who follows at a distance. Once in the yard, Ichigo appears more comfortable, standing tall and exploring his surroundings. He does not seek attention from handler. He returns to kennel with low body and refuses to go into the kennel, pancaking. He is not interested in treats. A second handler places another leash on him and he is muscled in. 1/21/25(Late Entry): Ichigo is at the front of the kennel hard barking and growling at handler. He is not receptive to treats.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration/Strength/leash pulling: According to Ichigo, Ichigo will growl and hard bark at strangers while on leash and pulls very hard. Positive reinforcement should be used to teach Ichigo to associate new people with things he likes such as treats and toys, and check in with his handler when he sees his triggers. A front clip harness should be used to help with his pulling. Please see the handouts on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression, On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration and Leash Manners. Anxiety: Ichigo is noted to be anxious when left alone. He will need daily enrichment to help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on General Anxiety. Low threshold for arousal/Bite history (human):According to Ichigo's owner, Ichigo becomes aroused during play and once bit and held onto his sleeve, leaving red marks. He should learn impulse control with the use of positive reinforcement.
