Animal Profile

Funk Master Flash

Hello, my name is Funk Master Flash. My animal id is #251585. I am a desexed male tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/8/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Funk Master Flash is on the At Risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. WHile he has struggled to adjust to the shelter setting, he previously tolerated some touch and interaction with behavior staff. He is now displaying signs of more significant signs of Fearfully Defensive Behaviors due to his high levels of FAS. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to decompress at his own pace and approach on his own terms so as to not feel pressured or cornered - and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

A volunteer writes: We know Funk Master Flash likes the treats we leave for him. We also know that he prefers we not stare at him while he enjoys them. This is understandable for many reasons but also because Funk Master Flash could use a little extra space to collect his thoughts at the moment. Brought to us with two other cats when their guardian passed away, it must seem like the rug has been pulled from beneath his little paws. Settling into shelter life has been a considerable process and I'm not entirely sure Funk Master Flash knows where to start. Snuggled up in the back of his cubby and ready to air his grievances, we know he's not a fan of the Care Center but he shows bright and starry glimpses of the kitty he can be when he allows pets. We might not be able to see all of Funk Master Flash's best sides at the moment, but we hope that what we see is enough to convince someone that he's the cat for them.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Funk Master Flash was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. Funk Master Flash has previously lived with 2 other cats.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/12/26 Vol. Funk Master Flash jumped onto the perch as soon as the kennel cover was lifted. He hissed and grumbled, with ears in the airplane position. I put Squeeze Up next to him, which he did not eat. He stopped hissing but continued to grumble off and on. I spoke to him and petted him with the scratcher. He tolerated the tool but did not lean in or rub against it. His ears eventually rose to the upright position but he continued his grumbling, at the rear of the perch. I ended the interaction after a few minutes because he still needs time to adjust. 4/14/26 FB06 Funk Master Flash is at the back of the cubby behind his litter box, eyes are wide, ears forward, one paw tucked under and his tail is tight alongside his body. Loafed with his face against the wall, he low growls as the scratcher approaches but then leans his head forward and very curiously sniffs the scratcher. He allows for head pets as his eyes slowly close and open and his one ear turns slightly outward. As he is pet along his back he begins to low growl again turning his head watching the scratcher, and lip lick. Petting his head again, the low growling stops and his eyes close and open slowly. 4/18/26 FB79 At the back of the cubby, Funk is behind the litterbox with a tense body, wide eyes and hisses when i opened the door; he lip licked after i slow blinked but his ears remained almost flat to his head. I slowly brought the tool close for him to smell but he hissed once again and started to low growl when i ran the tool on the top of his head as well as when it made contact with his back/body 4/20/26 FB61 Hunched in back of kennel, body and face tense with his ears flattened completely and his tail wrapped around his body. He hisses, growls and lowers himself down as I reach towards him with a tray of squeeze-ups, the fur along his back rising. He begins rapid breathing and huffing as I speak to him softly and slow-blink so I do not push petting at this time. When I check on him later I see the treats have been eaten! 4/22/26 FB58 In his box with a tense face and body, turns to look as I open the cage door - he appears to be under the weather as well. He hisses with ears tilted and eyes wide and dilated. I offer him a treat tray with a medley of treats, pushing it closer with the scratcher tool. I leave it for him to eat on his own. When I check back, he hasn't eaten it and hisses again. 4/26/26 FB06 Sisi is lying inside her hidey box, eyes are wide and ears are forward. As I offer her the scratcher she curiously sniffs. Attempting to pet her head she dodges moving her head away from the scratcher. As I pet along her body she squirms and moves to the back corner of the box. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Funk Master Flash has high levels of FAS during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended interactions. Fear/Defensive aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, interact with you - as well as the choice to not interact. Be sure to offer positive reinforcements such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. 5/1/26 Funk Master Flash previously accepted pets from a member of the behavior team using the scratcher tool a few days ago but seems to have deteriorated since then or had a high stressor occur which has resulted in him becoming much more forward in his defensive, fear-based aggression. Which has unfortunately resulted in him no longer tolerating touch and lunging, swatting, and biting when touch is attempted with the Assess-A-Hand.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Funk Master Flash would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 4/11/26 At the top of the kennel, Funk Master Flash is hunched with an arched back, with eyes, slightly tilted ears and his tail wrapped; when the assessor greeted him he hissed harshly as his eyes dilated. When the tool was used for petting he continuously hissed while it ran down and around his back/body as he squirmed around trying to avoid further contact. Funk Master Flash briefly tolerated petting on his head and cheeks but he began to dodge the tool with his body tense and his ears flat. Pick up was not attempted at this time. 5/1/26 Upon meeting with Funk Master Flash again, he is sitting in his litter box and low growling as anyone walks past (even with the cubby cover on the cubby window blocking his view). When the cover is slowly removed, he hisses and is sitting hunched with a low and tense face and body, ears tilted flat to the side, and eyes wide with his pupils very dilated. He low growls throughout the interaction, and the assessor waits for him to settle somewhat, slow blinking and standing with their body turned somewhat away from him. Once he fully lowers himself down, the assessor slides a squeeze up tube through the crack of the cubby door and he seems curious, stepping forward to sniff. The assessor then slowly and calmly opens the cubby door and places more squeeze up down on the floor of the cubby. Funk Master Flash leans forward to sniff at the squeeze up as well as the assessor's hand- which they keep in place until he is done sniffing. As they pull their hand back, he reaches forward and swats at their hand breaking the glove but not breaking any skin. When the assessor waits a couple minutes and returns with the Assess-A-Hand, they slowly open the cubby door as he hisses and low growls - body still tense and low with eyes wide and dilated and ears tilted. Immediately as the Assess-A-Hand is offered out slowly, he lunges forward and swats at it multiple times with both hands, hissing and growling. When touch is attempted, he bites at the hand multiple times. The interaction is ended, no pick up is attempted due to his level of FAS and potential for further escalation, and he continues to low growl for some time even after the interaction has ended. Funk Master Flash is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, scratch, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
