Date of assessment:: 1/22/2025

Summary:: During his stay in the care center Peanut has been observed to be fearful and tense when interacting with handlers. Upon attempting a reassessment, Peanut became tense and avoidant when approached by the main handler. He began hypersalivating, hiding behind the second handler, seeking exit, and flinching from sudden movements and sounds. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety displayed. Peanut is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time.

Summary:: 12/19/24: Peanut greets another dog at the gate with a soft body. He then moves away and does not reapproach. 1/18/25: Peanut greets another dog at the gate with a soft body.

Summary (6):: 1/22/25: Peanut is at the front with a soft body. He is easily leashed. When removed from kennel, he pulls hard towards the other dogs as he passes their kennels. He is walked on the street where he remains near handler, looking to them frequently for treats. He will stand perpendicular to handler blocking their path or sitting. Treats are tossed forward to keep him moving. In the behavior room, he leans into handler as second handler attempts to interact. He seeks exit, pacing and hiding behind main handler legs. He attempts to cage fight with the other dogs upon return to kennel. Treats are tossed ahead to distract him and get him into kennel. 1/16/25: Peanut is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is offered treats and takes them softly from handler. He is leashed without issue and exits kennel, Peanut pulls hard towards the other dog kennels attempting to kennel fight but is kept away. He waits with handler at the elevator and sits for more treats. Peanut is brought to the yard for a dog to dog gate greet. During the interaction Peanut approaches the gate and both dogs sniff each other, touching snouts through the gate briefly before quickly disengaging. Peanut approaches again after a bit, he is neutral bodied and wags his tail quickly when sniffing. Handlers end interaction and Peanut is brought to a different pen where he interacts with handler, following simple commands and checking in with handler when walking. Peanut is brought back to kennel and returns without issue.

As well as observed to be hard panting. 12/12/24: Peanut is laying down in her kennel as handler approaches, she is easily leashed using treats and taken out on a street walk. Peanut does not pull outside and takes treats gently, when handler sees a dog approaches she pulls peanut to the side and gets her in a sit. Peanut looks at the dog passing by but is easily refocused by calling her name and using a squeaker. Handler asked for paw to which peanut lifted but when she touched the handlers hand she flinched it away. Handler asked for paw a separate time to which she just lifted it and didn't attempt to touch the handler and was rewarded for the attempt. She is returned to kennel with ease. 12/10/24: Peanut is observed to be standing at the front of the kennel, hypersalivating, trembling and heavy panting. 12/09/2024: Peanut is sitting in the his kennel towards the back but approaches the front as handler approaches. He keeps a slow pace and is returned to kennel without issue. - TK 12/7/24: Peanut is sitting at the back of his kennel as handlers approach. He is offered treats by handler which he does not respond to and is also shown a squeaker toy which he again does not have any reaction to. When opening Peanuts kennel door, he stands and approaches, allowing leashing without issue before being taken out of kennel and brought to the street for his walk. He walks alongside handler and does not pull during his walk. He walks past people on the street without issue and spots multiple dogs on his walk, when spotting them he generally shows no reaction and maintains an aloof body posture. He is brought back to the building after a bit and returns to kennel without issue.

Summary:: Tense and fearful, Growling, hard barking, and lunging in crate

Date of initial:: 12/6/2024

Summary:: Mildly sedated

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Peanut so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: During his intake, Peanut was observed to hard bark, growl and lunge while in the crate. During his stay in the care center Peanut has remained fearful with a tense body. Positive reinforcement should be used to help Peanut associate new people with things he likes such as treats and toys. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Peanut has been observed to pull very hard towards the other dogs in the kennel room. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily using treats. Peanut will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
