Tofu
Hello, my name is Tofu. My animal id is #253878. I am a desexed male brindle dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 5/6/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormTofu is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Tofu displays high arousal behaviors including persistent jumping on handlers and occasional leash biting. Tofu has started to grab onto clothing and limbs during interactions, making it difficult to walk him safely at times. Tofu loves toys, readily engages in play and enrichment activities, and is highly social with staff but is struggling in the care center. Medically, Tofu is apparently healthy.

We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. A volunteer writes: Tofu brings me so much JOY! It's clear that he views the world with rose colored glasses. Everything is new, exciting and so much fun! He seems to have endless energy that only wanes slightly with an intense game of fetch or maybe some peanut butter spray to calm him. He has a great sense of humor, too...like the time we thought he was a girl and put him in a dress! Joke was on us because he was just happy we had to take him back out and redo his pictures and videos and he got to play, play, play again! He's so cute and smol and a little round potato and when he starts to get ornery it's very easy to forgive him!

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is limited prior dog-to-dog history recorded. Tofu came into care with a LMB. 05/09/26 Tofu is introduced to a novel female while off leash. He approaches the gate with a neutral frame. The female is walked into Tofu's yard, and he is indifferent to her, allowing her to sniff but then walking away. He is introduced to a novel male next and will but tuck when the male sniffs him and his lip tightens slightly before walking away. Handlers guide the male away as to not overwhelm him.
Summary (4):: 6/30: Tofu is standing at the front of his kennel, panting when a handler approaches. They can clip his collar while feeding him treats. Tofu only sniffs them, not eating. He bounds out of his kennel, pulling towards the room door. Tofu is brought to the behavior office, where he immediately begins racing around the room, panting heavily, with a slight tinge of pink. He is unable to focus readily or settle on his own. Tofu begins bouncing off of handlers, will race to a toy, then to a snuffle mat, then return to bounce off a handler again. Tofu is coaxed onto the slat mill and is then secured to it. Handlers continue to coax him to run on the slat mill. After quite some time he can build up his pace. Once he's done with his session, he is returned to the kennel without issue.
Summary (5):: 06/29/26: Tofu is at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is leashed easily and brought to the office. He sniffs around, not showing much interest in regular treats, but immediately picks up and plays with toys that are scattered around the room. After a couple of minutes, Tofu begins jumping up towards the handler, mouthing at their clothes. The handler directs him to some spray cheese, which Tofu licks before returning to the toys in the room. He is brought back to his kennel without issue. 6/27/26: Tofu is at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. He is then leashed with ease and brought to the behavior office where he will sniff around at first and pick treats up from the ground. The handler will then give him a treat scatter while they clip his collar with a drag leash. He will eat treats from the snuffle mat but does not keep his attention on it and jump onto the handler for more treats. The handler attempts to lure him onto the Klimb but Tofu will just start sniffing around. After a while, he is returned to his kennel where he is secured safely. 06/23/26: Tofu is standing at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and brought to the office where he is clipped to a drag leash. Tofu jumps up on other handlers with a loose body and runs around the room engaging with a snuffle mat, a lick mat, and various toys for a few seconds at a time. Tofu enjoys plush toys with squeakers and chasing a toy on the flirt pole. He is returned to his kennel without issue. 6/22/26: Tofu is observed to be intensely leash biting onto a handler's leash as they attempt to redirect him with a toy and treats. He does not respond to the toy or treats and has to be stiffed armed. He is then quickly retuned back to his kennel. 6/21/26 (late entry): Tofu is at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. He is standing with a forward posture and is easily leashed. He will come out of kennel quickly and is brought out to the play yard where his collar is clipped with a drag leash so he can roam around the yard. Throughout the session, Tofu will play two toy fetch with the handler who will toss one of the toys into the pool. Tofu will readily remove the toy from the pool, slapping the water with his paws as he does so. Tofu will lay down with one of the toys so the handler ends the game and leashes him. A dog will bark and lunge at his outside of the play yard and Tofu will attempt to leash bite, jump up very high. He will not leash bite and is redirected with treats. He is returned to kennel and is secured safely.
Summary (6):: 06/15/26 (Trainer Note): Tofu is lying at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and calmly walks to the training room. When inside, he is clipped to a drag leash and immeidately shakes off. He will then begin jumping at the handler as they pick up a toy. After a couple of minutes of polite exchange, Tofu will drop the toy at the handler's feet on the verbal cue "out". The handler takes a break from PE to try and lure Tofu into a sit, to build onto his PE. Tofu is not receptive, even with high value treats and begins to jump at the handler. They put some treats into a snuffle mat and will then attempt to releash. Ss the handler picks up their leash, Tofu will jump and try to grab it, making contact with the handler's upper arm. The handler tries to give tofu toys and he will take the third they offer. Tofu is then releashed and returned to his kennel without issue. 06/08/26: Tofu is lying the front of his kennel As the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls mildly to the training room. When inside, he lets the handler clip him to a drag leash and he immediately shakes off. Tofu will engage with some polite exchange with the handler for several minutes. Each time, Tofu will return to the handler with a toy and drop it at their feet. The handler will mark this with a "yes!" before tossing another toy for him. The handler attempt to build a sit on approach to this, but Tofu is unable to sit. The handler ends the PE and begins work on using Tofu into a sit. Tofu will sit twice using a lure and be marked and rewarded. Tofu will take treats from the handler but will not solicit attention. Tofu is easily leashed and safely returned to kennel. 5/31/26: Tofu is reported on the whiteboard to walk with a hard toy. 5/30/26: Tofu he is reported to lunge at dogs walking pass his kennel and is seen banging at his crate during cleaning. 05/26/26: Tofu is laying down when the handler approaches. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Tofu's social hyperarousal, leash biting, and mouthiness, we recommend an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Tofu came into the care center as a stray; due to this, his behavioral history in a home environment is unknown. Tofu has not adjusted well to the care center environment and has shown leash biting behavior. He is noted to be social with handlers often seeking attetion from staff. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition | Social hyperarousal | Leash-biting: Tofu quickly becomes aroused in the presence of people, jumping up, mildly leash biting, and mouthing. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach him to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Tofu. Please see the handout on mouthiness and arousal. Fearful: During his first stay, Tofu was initially fearful, backing away when approached. However, with a slow and gentle approach, he begins to warm up, becoming wiggly and bouncy. During his most recent medical exam, he was noted to be initially timid but accepted treats. This suggests that while he is cautious at first, he is capable of building trust and responding positively to patient, low-pressure interactions. Please see the handout on the decompression period.
