Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Sargent was placed at risk due to behavior and medical concerns; she has displayed Anxiety, handling/touching sensitivity, and reactivity on leach. Sargent has a bite history and was also diagnosed with CIRDC and would have to keep separate from other dogs for the next 14 days. We are recommending placement with an experienced dog experienced.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A staff member writes: 1 2 3 4 guess what dog I love and adore???!!! If you said Sargent, well you've guessed right!!! This handsome fellow is everything you would want in a dog. He is loving, he plays, he is chill ... and he is amazing. He is so Beautiful and his personality is the perfect match. He allows handling with familiar staff and enjoys a nice scratch on the back. Summary:: According to Sargent's previous owner, he does not do well with other dogs as he gets anxious around them and he might try to snap at them. He did this with another dog but did not break the skin. Here in the Care Center, when introduced to a novel dog, Sargent is uncomfortable and gives quick warning signs to the other dog. Due to Sargent's reported bite history (dog), which did not result in broken skin and his display of uncomfortable behaviors in playgroup it is recommended that Sargent be the only resident dog until his behavior around other dogs is re-assessed in a more controlled setting. Force-free, reward-based training only is advised, as well as seeking guidance from a qualified trainer or veterinary behaviorist. 4/23: When off leash at the Care Center, Sargent is introduced to a novel female dog. Sargent is anxious and avoidant when an attempt is made to have him greet the female greeter dog. The female's leash is held due to Sargent being uncomfortable, but he does not approach. When the female dog approaches first, Sargent tenses and gives her a quick lip curl, then avoids for the remainder of the session.

Date of intake:: 4/19/2019

Summary:: No handling performed

Date of initial:: 4/20/2019

Summary:: Tense body, trembling, whale eye, muzzled, alligator rolled

ENERGY LEVEL:: Sargent has been observed to exhibit a medium level of energy during his interactions in the care center. We cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment, but we recommend that he be provided daily mental and physical stimulation as an outlet for his energy.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: When a handler approaches Sargent he is lying down at the front of his kennel. Once he sees her he stands up and licks her fingers, and takes a treat with a soft mouth displaying a loose and wiggly body. She is able to leash him without issue and walks him out of the room on a short lead quickly. He does bark passing the other dogs, but the handler is able to redirect him and Sargent is not observed to escalate. He pulls moderately hard, but once outside he relieves himself. He is brought to the play yard, a drag leash is attached and Sargent explores the pens relieving himself again. He then bounces over to the handler and solicits attention with a wiggly body. He drapes his upper body over her lap and allows her to pet his entire body. She brings out tennis balls and Sargent spends the remainder of the session playing with the tennis balls. When the session is over, Sargent is easy to leash and returns to his kennel without issue. 5/23/19: When placing the rope around Sargent to take him outside for a walk and interaction, he was observed to display a soft, loose and wiggly body. Sargent began to solicit attention by jumping up softly onto handler and nearby staff, with a wagging tail and accepted all contact. The handler was able to walk Sargent outside without any issue. During his walk, Sargent checked in with handlers and readily accepted treats with a soft mouth. He began to explore and relieve himself without exhibiting any signs of anxiety or stress. While continuing to walk outside, Sargent encountered a small, novel dog being walked on leash on the same side of the street. He was observed to display interest by watching the other dog, but showed no reactivity and was easily redirected with treats or by calling his name. The handler was able to walk away from the novel dog and Sargent followed and was not observed to escalate. Sargent leaned into and accepted all contact during his walk. After the interaction, the handler was able to walk Sargent back inside and return him to his kennel without any issue.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No young children (under 5),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5): Sargent has shown great improvement overall in the care center. When introduced to novel people, Sargent immediately engages, solicits attention by jumping up softly and accepts all contact with a loose and wiggly body. We highly advise he be placed in a stable home environment with no young children, wherein he acclimate and decompress at his own pace. Force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing or exposing Sargent to new and unfamiliar situations, as well as utilizing guidance from a qualified, professional trainer/behaviorist. Single Pet Only Home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to Sargent's reported bite history (dog), and owner reported anxiety toward other dogs, which did not result in broken skin and is his display of uncomfortable behaviors in playgroup (SEE DOG-DOG SUMMARY), it is recommended that Sargent not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog until his behavior around other dogs is re-assessed in a more controlled setting. Force-free, reward-based training only is advised, as well as seeking guidance from a qualified trainer or veterinary behaviorist.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Anxiety,Bite history (dog)

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity: Sargent has exhibited handling sensitivity during his interactions in the care center. Although he displays social behavior, solicits attention and seeks contact, he was observed to tremble, remain tense and alligator roll during his medical exam. He was not observed to escalate beyond these behaviors. Please refer to the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful: Sargent is reported by his previous owner to display initial anxiety and timidity when introduced to new people or environments. Although he has shown significant improvement since his intake (by displaying social behavior, soliciting attention and seeking contact), Sargent did display initial fearfulness and timidity during his interactions. Please refer to the handout on Fearful behavior. Bite history (dog): Sargent has been reported by his previous owner to have had a bite incident with another dog. During this incident, a neighbor's dog approached Sargent, who was reported to display anxious behavior before biting the approaching dog and releasing immediately. This bite did not result in broken skin. Please refer to the handout for Bite history (dog) Anxiety: Sargent has exhibited some anxious behavior during his interactions in the care center. Although he displays social behavior, solicits attention and seeks contact, he has been observed to pant, whine, pace and was easily distracted by outside noises during his assessment. Please refer to the handout on Anxiety.
