I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/26/2019, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Puchi is at risk for behavioral reasons. Puchi has a bite history and becomes nervous around strangers. Puchi would be best suited for placement with a new hope partner that can provide the necessary behavior modification and low stress environment. Medically, Puchi is a senior dog with some underlying issues which may need further care.

DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: ~9yrs based on PE. MC found? scanned negative. placed by LVT History: O surrender. P bit owner on the foot when startled. Subjective / Observed Behavior - Tense, whale-eyed, shaking during exam. Briefly growled but did not escalate. Evidence of Cruelty seen - none Evidence of Trauma seen - none Objective BCS 7/9 EENT: Nuclear sclerosis, OU; ears clean, no nasal or ocular discharge noted Oral Exam: dc 3/5; pd 3/5. full oral exam not performed PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: 4/6 murmur auscultated; Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: neutered male. MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, hair coat is unkempt. CNS: Mentation appropriate - no signs of neurologic abnormalities Rectal: externally normal. Assessment heart murmur overweight dental disease nuclear sclerosis Prognosis: good Plan: recommend weight loss of ~4lbs,then reassess. recommend cardiology consultation and work-up recommend routine daily dental dental care as well as dental under general anesthesia after clearance from cardiology. SURGERY: neutered

Puchi began growling and showing teeth as counselor approached him. He continued to sick lower with ears pushed back as counselor attemped to put hand out for him to smell. The counselor had to end up using a towel to wrap the dog up to remove his collar and was not able to collar with ident-band.

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to Puchi's reported behavior towards strangers, as well as his behavior towards handlers at the care center, we recommend an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Puchi is reported to be extremely nervous around strangers and will growl if approached or bite if startled. At the care center, Puchi growls, bares teeth, and snaps at handlers who attempt to remove him from the kennel, allowing for minimal handling since intake. Due to this behavior, we recommend Puchi be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow him to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Puchi to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior he presents with outside of the care centers.
