Cosmo

Hello, my name is Cosmo. My animal id is #250676. I am a desexed male brown brindle dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 3/27/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Cosmo is at risk for behavior reasons. Cosmo has begun to deteriorate in care, leash-biting persistently when being removed and returned to kennel making him a potential bite risk. Once he is walked further away from the shelter, he is able to relax and engage with staff. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

Meet Cosmo-a stellar young pup who's ready to launch into his next adventure! We have no previous home information, as he was found as a stray. But one thing's for sure: his personality is out of this world. Cosmo is still learning the basics of life on planet "Home," and his manners are definitely a work in progress. He's got springs in his paws and can jump to impressive heights-so don't be surprised if this cosmic cutie tries to reach for the stars. With some consistent training and guidance, he'll be on the fast track to becoming a well-mannered companion. He's a bright, energetic pup who would thrive with an adopter ready to help him orbit into good habits. With patience, structure, and plenty of positive reinforcement, Cosmo has the potential to truly shine. If you're looking for a dog who will keep you on your toes and fill your days with astronomical amounts of fun, Cosmo might just be your perfect match!

Summary:: 3/29: Cosmo approaches the gate to greet M LMB dog. He has a soft body and sniffs through the gate with a wide wagging tail, open mouth. He checks in with handler and is easily walked away.

Summary (6):: 4/12: A variety of treats are used to attempt and distract Cosmo. He ignores them, immediately going to bite the leash when being removed. A large jerky treat is given, and he is able to be leashed. He is rope harnessed and brought on a walk. His body is tense, tail high until they are further up the block. He then softens and marches in place while staff scratches his back. He will sit for treats and take them nicely. When being returned, he is barking, and screeching, trying to pull ahead to adoptions room. Once in his kennel, he quickly turns around, jumps up and grabs the leash. He plays tug with the lead so handler drops it into kennel and used a stick to remove. PM: When returning Cosmo to his kennel, he avoids going in. He turns, jumps up and bites and holds onto handler's sweatshirt. Another staff member jumps in and helps hold his leash up and away from handler. They place him into the kennel and quickly close the door behind him. 4/11: Cosmo is reported to turn around when being returned to kennel and bite onto handler's pant leg. 4/7: When staff attempt to removed Cosmo from kennel, he is attempting to push out, pawing at the door repeatedly, making it very difficult to secure slip lead. Once secured he reacts to neighboring dog barking and pulling having to be moved along. He remains tense in the halls and does not soften until he is further from the shelter. He relaxes on the walk. When entering the building, he is screeching and pulling back to kennel.

Summary (7):: 4.5.26 Cosmo is at the front of his kennel and tries to push out as he is being leashed. Once leashed Cosmo is taken for a brief walk. Cosmo pulls moderately hard but walks with a soft body. Cosmo is then brought to a yard. When staff sits down, he approaches them with a soft body and leans into pets. With a soft and exuberant body, he jumps up against the staff member. Cosmo then begins to climb on Items in the yard but allows staff to pick him up and place him on the ground. He is easily returned to his kennel. 3/30: Cosmo is easily leashed and brought on walk. He will pull to the end of the leash but is called back and offered treats when walking with the handler. They go into the yard, and a drag leash is attached. Cosmo follows handler who sits on the climb. They engage in a game of up down. Cosmo is able to be lured into a sit 2x, then begins to jump up for treats seeming frustrated. They return to up/down to keep it fun for him. He returns without issue. 3/29: Cosmo is in the yard with a volunteer when staff enter. He runs over to greet exuberantly, jumping high up to the staff members face. He has a loose body and follows the staff to the bench. When they sit down, he jumps up on the bench seeking attention and climbing up onto staff's shoulders. His leash is held and he is removed and walked around giving him some time to reset. 3/28: Cosmo is sitting in the middle of his shoreline kennel shaking when staff approaches. He slowly gets up and moves forward and easily leashed and brought outside for a walk. On the walk his body language relaxes more, ears pulling back and tail going up as he explores scents. At one point he jumps up staff's leg to greet them. Cosmo pulls moderately hard on the rope and sneezes and coughs a bit. On return Cosmo balks before being pulled into the kennel far enough he re-enters the rest of the way on his own.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Cosmo is deteriorating in care and escalating to biting onto items when returned to kennel. We recommend a home with no children at this time.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Anxiety,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manner/Impulse Control: Cosmo lacks basic manners and impulse control. During socialization, he has been observed to jump up high towards staff members face, seeking attention. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see the handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Bite history (human): When being returned to kennel, Cosmo jumps up and bites and holds onto handler's sweatshirt. Please see handout on Bite History. Anxiety: Cosmo appears anxious at the care center, pacing and whining during socialization. If Cosmo displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see the handout on Generalized Anxiety. Low threshold for arousal: Cosmo is becoming highly aroused when being removed and returned to his kennel. He will jump up and snatch the leash from handler's hands and bitten at clothing when being returned. Once he is away from the shelter, he is able to relax and soften up. Please see handout on Arousal.
