Animal Profile

Lunamae

Hello, my name is Lunamae. My animal id is #240691. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 8 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/1/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.

Lunamae is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. Her owner describes her as a lazy couch potato who prefers contact on her own terms. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Medically Lunamae was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection.

I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/10/25 Vol. Lunamae was in her den, with her head showing outside. She hissed and grumbled when the door to the kennel was opened. Her ears were flat against her head. I put Squeeze Up and Temptations on a tray near the kennel door and she walked over to it to eat. I petted her on the head with my finger a couple of times, but she pulled away. I put a scratcher tool near her and she swatted and hissed at it, then returned to her den. She was not ready to socialize today. 11/10/25 FB79 Seems very under the weather today; at the front of her kennel with flat ears as she watched me through the little side cover. She would hiss when i approached but remained at the front with flat ears and her tail wrapped around her legs. 11/13/25 FB58 In den with a slightly tense face and body - can't coax her out of the den and she appears pretty UTW. I leave her some treats at the front of the cage in hopes that she will come out and eat them when she is alone. 11/16/25 FB79 Lunamae was lying down outside her den. When I spoke to her, she hissed at me. I put Squeeze Up and Temptations on a tray and slipped it into the kennel. She stood up and came over to smell my hand, which was on the bars of the kennel. I put the scratcher between the bars, but she hissed and I ended the interaction without petting her. 11/25/25 FB06 As I approach, Lunamae comes out of her den with a neutral face and eyes and a loose body and high tail. I crack the door open, as she is at he front of the kennel, and she hisses once and then pokes her nose out. I offer her the scratcher through the crack and she starts petting herself as she paces back and forth rubbing herself on the scratcher. She looks at me through the glass with a questionable look.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer for more information.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 4

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: Lunamae was described as being curious and tolerant towards children in her previous home. She was also described as preferring contact on her own terms. For this reason, behavior team is recommending she goes to a home with children over the age of 13.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Lunamae was lying in the back of her kennel as the assessor approached, body and face tense with her ears tilted and her tail wrapped around her belly. Lunamae made eye contact when spoken to and she hissed with her ears flattening further as the kennel door opened. Lunamae tolerated petting along her head and body a few times with the assess-a-hand while whipping her head back and hissing repeatedly. When pet by her face she hisses twice before swatting and biting the hand. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Lunamae is not open to interaction at this time and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. Because her previous owner reports she is a lap cat (eventually) in a home environment we believe the behavior seen in the care center is shelter-specific and this cat would make a great pet and is struggling in the shelter environment. This cat is suitable for adopters with previous cat experience who are willing to work with a cat who needs time and patience to help her adjust to their new home.
