Yasuke
Hello, my name is Yasuke. My animal id is #239742. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 12/15/2025.
Yasuke is at risk due to behavior concerns. Yaskue came to our care center as a stray. During his stay in our care center, Yaskue charges the front of his kennel, bares teeth, growls and muzzle punches his door. At times can have a tense body and hard stares at staff. During his assessment Yasuke becomes tense while hovering over a toy and snaps, bites the assess-a-hand. Yasuke is receptive to treats which he takes firmly and is social with handlers on walks. He walks with mild pull and responds to verbal cues. Medically, Yasuke is apparently healthy.

Yasuke came to ACC as a stray and is currently at risk due to behavior concerns in the shelter environment. In his kennel, he can appear intense-charging the door, hard staring, growling, baring teeth, and "muzzle punching" the door. Out on walks, though, Yasuke shows a very different side: he's social with handlers, receptive to treats (he takes them firmly), and can settle into a steady, sniffy walk once outside. Yasuke needs a confident, experienced adopter who understands that shelter stress can amplify behavior-and who can help him decompress and build trust safely. My Ideal Home Yasuke is looking for an adult-only, experienced home that can provide structure, clear routines, and force-free training. He will benefit from a predictable environment, calm handling, and a thoughtful management plan around high-value items. Consistent enrichment (food puzzles, scent games, long-lasting chews) and training sessions that focus on engagement and impulse control will help him thrive. A built-in crate for transport is recommended, and he should be the only dog in the home. Good with Kids? No. Yasuke is recommended for an adult-only home due to his behavior concerns, including guarding and on-leash intensity in stressful moments. Good with Other Pets? Yasuke should be the only pet. He has shown resource guarding and stress-related behaviors, and management will be safest in a home without other animals. Leash Manners In the shelter, Yasuke can pull hard getting out, but once outside he often settles into a milder pull and is responsive to verbal cues. He does well with treat-based redirection and handler engagement. A front-clip harness and reward-based leash training are recommended.

Summary:: 12/30/25: Yasuke greets another dog at the gate with a tense body. He then hard stares at the handler on the other side of the fence. 10/29/25: Yasuke greets another dog at the gate with a neutral body. Off leash, he is soft with rapidly wagging tail. Does not engage in play.
Summary (5):: 12/30/25: Yasuke is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body; he also barks at the handler and they give him a treat which he eats. He is easily leashed and brought down the stairs. Yasuke doesn't react to the dog in a nearby crate as the bark at him. He is brought down the stairs and into the yard for playgroup (Read 12/30 Dog-Dog Notes). The handler walks him around the perimeter, in which he pulls. The handler then brings him inside; during the elevator ride, Yasuke doesn't show interest in a staff member, as he sits and waits for a treat from the handler. The handler clips their leash and walks Yasuke to the room; as they walk, Yasuke picks up a nearby toy and returns to kennel with ease.
Summary (6):: 12/17/25: Yasuke is at the front staring at the handler with a neutral body. Yasuke is easily leashed and pulls super hard out of kennel. He is brought to the street where he relieves himself. He walks ahead of the handler with mild pulling and does not react to dogs or people. Yasuke is then walked back inside. He pulls very hard to the assessment room and he greets the assessor with a soft body and takes treats firmly. A leash is easily clipped to collar. After his assessment, Yasuke is returned to kennel without issue. 12/9/25: ACS is at the front of the kennel baby talking Yasuke, he is then observed to bare teeth, growl and muzzle punch the kennel door. When they holds their hand out he lip curls and growls. 12/7: Backyard interaction. He's a strong boy who can pull, but a sweet boy. In the backyard, he walks around the pen, checking another dog next to the pen (no barks, growls) with a tense body, He knows sit, and down cue and listens well with treats. Easily bring out/in to his kennel 12/5/25: Yasuke is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body. He is then easily leashed and removed from kennel where he would begin to pull very hard out of the building towards the street. Once onto the street, he would then begin to have a mild pull and would sniff around in multiple spots to relieve himself. Yasuke would continue to pull forward without reacting towards any passing stimuli, he would also remain neutral bodied throughout the walk. Afterwards, he is then clipped and easily returned back to his kennel. 12/5/25: (KSV) Staff approaches Yasuke's kennel in the PAC room. He is initially quiet, laying in back of kennel on kuranda bed. When handler touches kennel door handle, Yasuke immediately charges the door, bares teeth, growls, and hard barks, hard staring at the staff member. The door is opened to drop treats in, Yasuke becomes more neutral, begins wagging tail. Several treats are dropped in, he takes them. Kennel door is closed and locked Yasuke remains neutral, but tail is no longer wagging. Staff member touches door and Yasuke begins to bark again, but is no longer baring teeth or growling. Interaction is ended. 12/5/25: During rounds, Yasuke is reported by staff to charge the kennel door, hard bark, growl and bare teeth
Summary (7):: 11/25/25: Yasuke is laying down in back on kennel on kuranda bed. He approaches slowly, neutral body, soft frame. He is notably limping. Yasuke is easily leashed, exits kennel with slowly but steadily. Yasuke is taken for a short walk due to possible medical concerns. Yasuke baulks, once across the street, however is highly treat motivated, walks for treats. Yasuke relieves himself, enages with handler visually for verbal cues, continues to take treats. Yasuke is walked back to MACC, where pulls notably on the return, enters kennel without issue. 11/4/25- Yasuke is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, he is easily leashed and pulls hard exiting the room. While walking to the elevator he grabs a tennis ball and carries it to the elevator; he chews it in the elevator. He carries it to the play yard. He is placed on a drag leash and continues playing with the ball. Handler presents treats and Yasuke drops it, he comes to handler. They toss treats and he catches them. He follows the command to sit then down. When handler is holding treat in front of him, he jumps forward and snaps at treat. Handler has him sit again then is rewarded. When handler scratches his side he leans into handler's legs rubbing his body against them. He then sits between their legs and allows handler to scratch his chest and front legs. Handler then walks to the bench and sits, they call Yasuke over. He comes running over and again sits between handler's legs and leans into one leg while getting more scratches. He is easily leashed and he pulls hard back up to his room. He is clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 10/22/25: Yasuke is at the front of his kennel kennel with a slight tense body as the handler approaches. As the handler is leashing him, Yasuke head butts the door. The handler is able to bring him out of his kennel and the room. On the street, Yasuke walks ahead of the handler with tension on leash, pulling ahead. He notices dogs but doesn't react and shows no interest in passersby. Yasuke sniffs the handler; he also follows sit commands and takes treats hard. Yasuke gets startled by the handler a few times on the street, resulting in him pulling away from them. The handler brings Yasuke in for his assessment (See Assessment Notes). The handler leashes Yasuke and returns him to kennel.
Date of intake:: 12/15/2025
Summary:: Growled and charged towards another handler
Date of initial:: 12/15/2025
Summary:: Quiet, alert and responsive while in kennel
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Yasuke so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity and resource guarding we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: During his assessment Yasuke was obsvered to snap and bite the assess-a-hand. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Yasuke's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Mouthiness: Yasuke has been observed to take treats with a hard mouth. We recommend giving treats with a flat hand and to use force-free, reward-based training methods to teach Yasuke to take treats with a softer mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness. On Leash Reactivity: During his current intake Yasuke was obsvered to growl and charge towards another handler while on leash. During his previous intake Yasuke was reported to be hard barking towards other dogs. Yasuke will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Kennel Presence: Yasuke has been observed to charge the door, bares teeth, growls, and hard barks towards handlers while in kennel. When handlers interact with Yasuke and out of kennel he has a neutral body. While we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in any other contexts, in highly emotionally charged or stressful environments Yasuke may show behavior similar to what they are currently demonstrating in their kennel. We recommend potential adopters be comfortable managing this behavior and keeping themselves safe in any similar future situations.
