Animal Profile

Leia

Hello, my name is Leia. My animal id is #253126. I am a female white cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 4/27/2026.

Leia is on the At-Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. Although she is friendly and social, she is prone to overstimulation, quickly escalating to hissing and swatting during interactions. It is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language and overstimulation.

What my friends at ACC say about me: Leia tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. A volunteer writes: Leia is a sweet, beautiful girl, only about 3 years old. She is friendly and playful but from my interaction would do best with someone who really "gets" cats and can read their body language. Leia enjoys meeting new people however I could tell that she may get a bit overstimulated at times, although my interaction with her was very positive. I can't blame her for wanting someone who understands her, don't we all?

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

KNOWN HISTORY:: Leia was brought in as a stray, was reported initially friendly and affectionate but showed sudden aggression during a confined interaction. Behavior may be unpredictable and the cat could become aggressive in certain situations, especially in confined spaces or around resources like food. There is no other known information on her behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/30/26 Stress meowed upon approach and ate offered treats. He briefly accepted petting with the scratcher tool, showing a low, flicking tail. Despite hissing, she continued eating but became overstimulated and swatted through the kennel bars when the interaction ended. 5/02/26 FB47 Leia was asleep but woke up when spoken to and immediately got up and came forward, meowing gently, but was slightly worked up and looked like she wanted to come out of the kennel, and so I closed the kennel door and left her some treats. 5/16/26 Vol. Was at the front, standing, facing forward when approached. stuck paw through the bars - without claws. opened door. Allowed petting by hand. Leaned into cheek rubs, petting top of head, backside. Ate lickable treats offered on scratcher tool. Ignored dry treats, then went into other kennel through portal opening. (has double kennel). Offered squeeze up, stuck head through the portal door to see. sometimes she would come towards me and then back to the other kennel. If you close the door she comes to the front of kennel I'm standing at. then, if I opened the door, she goes back to the other kennel. She ate lickable treat directly from tube with head through the portal door and not always come all the way into the kennel to eat it.  5/17/26 FB09 Leia was sitting in her kennel with forward ears and neutral eyes, meowing when the door opened. She cautiously approached when treats were offered to her, sniffing them before licking them up. She allowed some brief pets along her head while she was eating before shifting away, coming forward again before backing away again, seeming conflicted but curious. 5/19/26 Resting by the front tolerating attention, eating offered treats. Alert with soft eyes, ears relaxed and forward. 5/20/26 Vol. Leia was lying on her side towards the front of the kennel, eyes almond shaped, ears up, whiskers back. She makes eye contact but is slow to blink when offered a treat. She licked the treat quickly and began to grab at the tool as if to get more. She allowed petting all over her head, body and down the back with the tool, lifting her rear and leaning into pets. Then she stress meowed twice and pushed against the bars of the kennel. A few crunchy treats were tossed to redirect her, and she began to twitch her tail and attempted to extend her paws through the bars. Tends to overstimulate. 5/22/26 Vol. Leia was towards the front of her cubby, in loaf, eyes and ears neutral. She was initially calm and then turned swiftly in reaction to a slowly extended finger. After a quick reset, she came forward again, accepting pets by hand. On signs of overstimulation, she was provided a catnip mouse with which she engaged briefly, and a scratcher that she used immediately. Seems energetic, in need of activity. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Sweet,Affectionate,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation,Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Leia is social and affectionate but appears to be easily overstimulated. As a result of this observed behavior, we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Leia becomes overstimulated. We also recommend fishing pole-type toys for play as they allow for interaction and vigorous, stimulating exercise while keeping human hands at a distance.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 05/05/26 Leia was in the kennel, sitting on her haunches facing away from the door. She was alert and meowed a little bit and sniffed treats slightly but refused to turn and face the assessor. When he began petting her gently along the neck and back, she made some vocalizations, meowing specifically, and turned to face the assessor. She sniffed squeeze up treats and allowed some more petting, and then began doing some meowing, somewhat like a stress meow, and she bristled as if she might become more aroused, and then did some hissing, so the interaction was ended. 06/05/26 Leia was sitting in her kennel with neutral eyes and forward ears. She cautiously approached the front of the kennel when offered treats and quickly began licking them up. She accepted some head pets while eating but once petting along her back, she flinched back and began hissing. The interaction was ended to reduce FAS and she's been noted to be particularly stressed and aggressive in the medical room. Leia tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
