Freddy Pawsbear
Hello, my name is Freddy Pawsbear. My animal id is #262309. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 8/13/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormFreddy Pawsbear is at risk due to behavioral reasons. While in care, Freddy has been observed to be highly fearful. Noted to have a tense body and face while out with handlers. When handlers attempt to interact with him, Freddy will begin growling at them. In one instance while out on a walk, a handler said his name, Freddy stopped to growl at them before continuing the walk. With select handlers, Freddy will tolerate petting on his back and sides. Summary:: Freddy has been observed to be fearful while in care. Noted to growl at handlers when they attempt to interact with him such as saying his name. While on leash he maintains a tense body and face. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety observed, Freddy is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (6):: 8/17/26: Freddy Pawsbear was at front of kennel with a neutral body where he was easily leashed and taken for a street walk. While on walk he maintained a neutral for most of the walk and walked next to handler with a slack leash. At one point handler said his name and he stopped and looked at handler and growled. Handler resumed walking and Freddy did as well, he went back to walking next to handler with a slack lead. He was returned to kennel with no issue. 8/16/26:(PM WALK)Freddy Pawsbear is lying down at the front of the kennel with a slightly tense body an a strained expression on his face. He stands up as the kennel is unlocked. Freddy stays at the front as the handler is able to leash him without issue. He walks out of the kennel and is taken out towards the backyard. Freddy relieves himself a few times and is walked around the yard. Occasionally, Freddy will look towards the handler with a tense body and face. He is aloof with the handler when called to with vocal sounds(whistles and kissing noises). Freddy Pawsbear relieves himself once more and is then walked back inside the shelter. He is then returned to his kennel without issue. 8/16/26: Freddy Pawsbear was at front of kennel with a neutral body. He was easily leashed and taken for a street walk. For most of his walk he maintained a neutral body and walked next to handler with a slack leash. He stopped a few times to sniff and investigate his surroundings. When returning to kennel he ducked his head as handler clipped the leash. He was put into his kennel with no further issue.
Summary (7):: 8/15/26: Freddy Pawsbear is at the back of his kennel with a stiff body when handler approaches. Handler speaks softly and offers treats, but Freddy initially does not approach. Handler attempts to open the kennel door and presents the leash; Freddy keeps his mouth tightly closed and turns his head away from the leash. Handler steps away and returns few seconds later with higher-value treats. It is observed that Freddy eventually came closer and was eating treats handler tossed before. Freddy approaches by himself and begins accepting high value (chicken, sliced cheese) as well. He remains in front of the kennel and handler is then able to leash him using a treat lure. After being leashed, Freddy looks around the kennel but does not attempt to exit. Handler opens the kennel door wider and places a treat trail on the floor. Freddy slowly begins exiting while remaining focused on the treats. His body remains stiff throughout the kennel exit, but he shows no reactivity toward neighboring dogs. In the hallways, Freddy continues to move slowly and shows no interest toward dogs in pop-up crates or passing staff members. Freddy is taken to the yard, where he immediately relieves himself upon entering the first pen. He then walks around the perimeter, sniffing and exploring his surroundings. His body is stiff, with a high-carried tail and slightly raised hackles despite the yard being empty. Freddy remains highly alert and frequently scans his surroundings. Due to his kennel being cleaned, Freddy is taken for a walk outside to the street. He walks in the same pace with the handler and shows no reactivity toward passing dogs or people. His body remains stiff, and his eyes are wide. He does not seek any interaction with handler. During the return, handler uses treats to distract Freddy and is able to pre-clip the leash. More treats are tossed on the floor in the room and into the kennel, which Freddy follows readily and goes back into his kennel with no further issues. 8/14/26: Freddy Pawsbear was standing in the middle of his kennel, when handler opened kennel door he moved to the back and laid down and kept his head down. Once handler draped the leash around his neck he cane forward and out of the kennel. He walked next to the handler with a slack leash and kept a neutral body. He displayed no reactivity to the dogs and people that he saw on the street. He tolerated pets on his back and sides. When being returned handler went to clip his leash and he ducked down and rotated a little on his side while looking back at handler. Handler paused with him for a little while and then continued on their way. He was returned to his kennel with no further issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Freddy Pawsbear so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior, we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Freddy has been observed to have a tense body and face while out with handlers. When handlers attempt to interact with him, Freddy will growl at them. During vaccines, Freddy began hard staring and snapping at handlers. It is important to move slowly with Freddy, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
