Date of intake:: 5/16/2025

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray( Limited History)

Date of assessment:: 5/22/2025

Summary:: Due to Cash high level of fearfulness and touch sensitivity, a handling assessment will not be conducted at this time.

Summary:: Due to Cash entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 05/28/25 Cash is introduced at the gate to a female greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Cash doesn't approach the gate, appearing nervous as she displays whale eyes, avoiding the gate. The greeter dog will linger in front of the gate attempting to solicit Cash's attention. Cash displays confliction as she raises her left paw, looking away from the greeter dog. Cash re-approaches the gate and as the greeter dog scents her through the gate, Cash will create distance. Cash will displace scent away from the gate, seeking an exit simultaneously. She lingers in front of the exit until she is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction. 05/25/25 Cash is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while on-leash at the care center. Cash is reluctant to approach the gate where the novel male dog remains self-present. Cash displays a tense frame as she avoids the gate, keeping her distance. Cash will displace as she scents away from the gate, remaining avoidant as the novel male dog ignores hers. Both dogs are separated from the gate and returned to their kennels, concluding the interaction.

Summary (4):: 5/28/25: Cash comes towards the front of her kennel with a low body when the handler approaches her kennel. She easily allows the handler to leash and take her to the behavior office for a socialization session. Cash allows the handler to place a slip lead over her and she begins to pace around the room. When Cash sees familiar handlers in the room she begins to slowly seek their attention with a slow tail wag and sits next to them. Cash gently takes treats from the handlers and allows light petting, they stop petting her when she begins to become uncomfortable, showing signs like lip licking and turning away from touch. After her socialization session, she is taken back to her kennel without issue. 05/28/25: Cash greets the handler growling while lying with a low head looking at the handler. The handler is able to easily lasso Cash. She will approach cautiously but willingly follows the handler out of the kennel room and out of the care center. When on leash, Cash is nervous walking with high shoulders and and tucked tail. Cash is brought to the Play yards for a dog-to-dog interaction. (Please refer to her Behavior assessment dog-to-dog summary for more details.) Cash is escorted back to her kennel where she is unleashed and safely secured.

Summary (5):: 5/22/25: Cash is laying down on his bed with a tense body at the back of her kennel as handler approaches. She continues to remain tense and did not want to move from her bed as the handler unlocks the door and tries to encourage her to come forward. She begins to lip lick while still in the same position. She remains still as the handler slowly presented their leash and slowly gets the loop around her head. Once leashed, she slowly gets up on her own and is slowly taken outside. On the walk, she had a tense body and tucked tail and would slowly walk next to the handler. She is then slowly taken to the behavior room due to the rain. In the room, she would slowly walk around and approach the handlers with a tense body to sniff them. She was comfortable taking high value chicken from the ground that a handler would offer her. She is slowly taken back to her kennel with no issues. 05/20/25 (PM) Cash's FAS remains the same when approached in kennel. She will approach as the handler stands up right, remaining still as the handler drops the loop of their lead into the kennel, allowing the handler to leash her, as she places her head through the loop. They proceed outside for a walk. Cash will maintain a moderate pace as she trots alongside the handler, heavily panting, displaying wide, dilated eyes. She is taken to the play yard where she will explore amongst herself, attempting to keep her distance from the handler while still on leash. Cash is returned to the facility where she will enter the building with no issue. When handler attempts to clip collar, she whips around quickly, with no form of escalation. She is placed in kennel and a hook is used to remove the handler's leash. 05/20/25: Cash is lying on her kuranda bed at the back of kennel as handler approaches. Handler cracks open the kennel door and she begins to tremble. Handler kneels down and tosses treats to lure her forward, but she shows no interest. Handler pushes the kennel door inward and Cash slowly stands up, urinates, and approaches handler, being leashed with ease. Cash walks with a tense, trembling frame to the Canine Behavior Office. She scents along the room and will approach handler when called but plants herself a foot away from them and lays down. She remains tense and trembling throughout her time in the room. After her session, Cash is returned to kennel safely.

Summary (6):: 05/19/25 (PM) Cash is at the back of their kennel displaying whale eyes as the handler approaches. Cash is coaxed to the front of the kennel with high value treats. Although Cash doesn't take any off of the ground, slowly coming forward, appearing nervous as she displays a tucked tail. She will walk into a wide loop willingly, allowing the handler to remove her from kennel. Cash will display a stiff frame, tucked tail, while walking hunched over. Cash will begin to pull as she exits the facility, heavily panting.Cash wouldn't take any treats during their time out, going on a lengthy walk where over time, Cash tail will become untucked. Cash maintains her stiff frame as they return to the facility. Cash will become fearful when having the leash clipped at the ring, pancaking to the ground, but the handler is slow in their approach, lightly clipping the ring. Cash will enter the building as well as her kennel with no issue. 5/19/25: Cash is at the back of her kennel sitting down, looking at the handler and begins to shake when the handler approaches. The handler opens the kennel door, crouches down and puts the leash in a loop and coaxes her forward with baby talk. Cash comes forward slowly, allowing the handler to leash her and take her for a brief walk. Cash is taken to the yard to sniff around, and Cash uses the bathroom immediately, and begins to sniff her surroundings while the handler sits on the bench and allows her to approach on her own volition. Cash does come to sniff the handler and begins to lean her rear into the handler when staff members pass by the gate, and when a new handler comes into the yard, the handler does pet her rear and she begins to whale eye the handler. Cash will sniff the new handler, but shy away choosing to not interact. Cash continues to sniff her surroundings, remaining low bodied and opting to not interact with staff even when coaxed. Cash is brought back to kennel soon after, where she is clipped slowly but does not react to the clasp closing. Cash walks into kennel slowly, and allows the handler to remove the leash with no issue. 5/18/25: Cash is observed to lunge off her kurunda bed at an ACS staff member who tries to take peek at her when moving her kennel cover to the side. Cash bares teeth, hard barks twice and lowers her body as the staff member moves her covering back.

Summary (7):: 5/18/25: Cash is at the back of her kennel shaking and whale eyeing the handler when approached in kennel. Cash kennel is soiled, having her to be removed from her kennel. As the handler goes to prepare the leash, Cash begins to come forward slowly towards the front of the kennel, allowing the handler to leash her slowly and walk her outside. Cash immediately uses the bathroom outside, and on the walk is hypervigilant, low bodied tucked tail, and pulling hard away from the handler for a majority of the walk. Cash does not react to any dogs or strangers, but remains fearful for the walk. The handler does not interact with Cash, allowing Cash to sniff her surroundings, and let her decompress on a longer walk. Cash is soon brought back to kennel, where she is clipped slowly but still flinches when hearing the sound of clasp close. Cash is brought back to kennel, where she walks into the kennel and allowing the handler to slowly remove the leash. 5/17/25: Cash was visited twice today. Both times, he was tense and visibly shaking when approached. In the morning, he stayed on his bed, trembling. He wouldn’t eat and avoided looking at the handler, who stayed off to the side in a crouch without direct eye contact. Cash was left alone after a few minutes. A sheet was placed over part of the kennel for visual cover, and once left alone, he began licking at the tossed treats and eventually lay down. In the afternoon session, Cash was upright on his bed when approached, still shaking. He made eye contact briefly but showed whale eye as the kennel door was opened, then looked away again. Treats were tossed gently, and he sniffed them first, then slowly started to eat. The handler stayed crouched, body angled away, tossing treats closer as Cash showed willingness. He ate near the handler but did not take food directly from the hand. He was left with a tray of high-value treats and the kennel was re-covered to allow him to decompress. **Intake**05/16/25: After transport, The handler will toss in treats into Cash kennel, Cash, looking at towards the back of the crate ignores them. Both handlers will gently tilt the crate to lasso Cash from above. Cash will practice avoidance lowering their head to the bottom of the kennel. Once gently lassoed The handlers till place the crate back up right. Cash will come out cautiously. Cash will proceed to urinate. Afterwards the handler will clip the leash, but when attempting to remove Cash chain leash Cash with growl and quickly snap at the handler, tapping their wrist with a closed mouth. The handler will guide her to her kennel where she will walk crouching down with high shoulders and a low head. Cash will willing walk into the kennel where she is safely secured.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Cash's high level of fearfulness, a handling assessment will not be conducted at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Cash came into the care center as a stray, and her previous behavior history in a home is limited. In care, Cash has shown fearfulness and has struggled to acclimate to the care center environment. Since intake, she has consistently displayed fearful behavior, including trembling, pancaking, whale eyes, and a low, tense body posture. She requires slow, gentle handling and often urinates when approached. While she is generally tolerant of leashing when approached calmly, she occasionally flinches at the sound of the clasp or the handler’s proximity. She does not currently accept treats by hand and often avoids interaction, opting instead to observe or explore at a distance. A New Hope placement is recommended due to her sustained high level of fear and limited handling tolerance.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Handling / Touch Sensitivity / Fearful / Anxiety: Cash has shown persistent fearfulness and anxiety since intake, struggling to acclimate to the care center environment. Her body language includes trembling, pancaking, whale eyes, and a low, tense posture, often accompanied by urination when approached. These signs indicate high sensitivity to handling and environmental stress. Training should prioritize building trust through slow, gentle interactions, use of calming techniques, and positive reinforcement to help her gain confidence and reduce fear-based responses. Please see the handout on Handling / Touch Sensitivity/decompression period / generalized anxiety.
