Salt
Hello, my name is Salt. My animal id is #249641. I am a desexed female muted tortoiseshell cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 7 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/2/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person health - pregnant.
Salt is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. She is now displaying signs of stress grooming, unintentionally causing harm to her face by pushing her nose through the kennel door insistently in an attempt to escape, and stress meowing for extended amounts of time. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible.

My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I have lived with cats in my previous home. Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. A volunteer writes: Tucked in a box that's become a temporary home, Salt poked her head out to tell me a number of things. Namely that I wasn't invited. I respect Salt's wish to have something to call her own, especially considering the whirlwind of changes she's been facing recently. Brought to us from a home with many other cats, Salt may not have a lot of experience meeting new people or new situations. This adds a very specific type of challenge to shelter life where new people and experiences are pretty much par for the course. We'd love to meet Salt where she is, which is mostly in her recycled box house, but we know she'll extend a very Salt-specific invitation when someone finally extends one to her.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
KNOWN HISTORY:: Salt was brought in from a hoarding situation with limited information on his/her behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/6/26 FB06 Salt is hunched on top of the ledge with wide eyes, hissing followed by meowing as I stand in front of the kennel. As I open the door, she continues hissing and meowing. Offering her the scratcher, she backs away into the corner and tenses up, still meowing. She tolerates some head pets with the scratcher but when pet along her backside, she jumps down off the ledge and hisses at the scratcher. 4/10/26 FB79 Salt is inside of the box, when her body curled and her eyes neutral; she hissed when I spoke and her eyes dilated when she saw the tool in my hand. She tensed up with her shoulders hunching in and her back arching slightly as she hissed some more when I attempted petting. She continued hissing and snapping at the tool when I pet on her back. 4/13/26 FB79 In the front of her box, Salt sits with wide eyes, her tail wrapped and her ears tilted when i greet her; as i open the kennel door she stands with an arched back and enters her box. She watches from inside of the box and had no reaction when i spoke or when i offered treats. When i brought the tool in she snapped her head back and started to duck and dodge it but after a few moments she tolerated pets on her head. 4/19/26 FB06 Salt was moved into a condo today. As I opened the kennel door of the shoreline, she was at the front. Her face and eyes were neutral, body was loose and she started to meow. She is not happy in the condo, meowing and hissing. A cage cover was placed in hopes she settles down. 4/26/26 Vol. Salt was meowing at the front of her kennel. I opened the door to give her Temptations and Squeeze Up. She gobbled them all up, accepting all petting while walking back and forth and rubbing her face against my hand. After the interaction ended, she took a long drink of water and began to vocalize again. 5/10/26 Vol. Salt could be heard vocalizing from the next room. When I opened the kennel door, she tried to push through it, using her head and front leg. I petted her and held her inside. I gave her Squeeze Up and Temptations, which she ate as I petted her head and body. She kept trying to push her way out of the kennel. She is very sweet, affectionate and ready to leave. She is also very insistent and strong for her size.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Talkative
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Social,Calm,Sweet,Affectionate,People oriented,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer. Although Salt is no longer showing signs of being fearful at this time, she took extra time to adjust in the shelter. She may require that extra time in a new home as well.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 2
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Adult only home due to behaviors displayed in shelter.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: At the front of the kennel, Salt has a neutral body with a with a wrapped tail, airplane ears; when the assessor approaches and greets she hissed harshly multiple times. While opening the kennel door she started to low growl/grumble and when the tool was slowly brought close she reached out striking with force. When the assessor attempted petting, Salt remained still with her body tense, tight tail and airplane ears as she hissed and pulled her head away from the tool ducking and dodging it. She did not tolerant any petting and attempted to swat at the tool when it was being pulled away. Pick up was not attempted at this time. 4/18/26 Salt is curled up at the front of her kennel meowing when the assessor walked into the room. As they knelt down by her kennel, the assessor offered there finger outside the bars and she curiously sniffed. The assessor then opened the kennel and let her sniff their hand. Her face and eyes are neutral, ears are forward as she stood up with a soft body. She enjoyed pets on her head and also along her back as she was leaning in, arching her back and pushing her back end up. She kept her tail curled under her body. As the assessor ended the interaction and closed the door, she laid in a loaf and began meowing again. Returning to Salt's kennel a little while later, the assessor picked Salt up and held her for a few minutes while her kennel was being cleaned. She became slightly squirmy before she was placed back in her kennel with no issues. Salt tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
