Furby
Hello, my name is Furby. My animal id is #241615. I am a female brown tabby cat at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/21/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - no pets allowed.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormFurby is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy!

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/22 Furby is hiding in her cubby when staff approaches. She is laying down with all four paws untucked. Her eyes are wide and fixated on staff as they approach. She hisses when staff comes close to the kennel door to unlock it. Staff slowly opens the kennel door and gently places a some frozen enrichment on the ledge. Staff ends the interaction there in order to minimize FAS. 12/24 Furby is curled up laying down in the back of her cubby. When staff goes to take her food and water bowl Furby hisses, with ears back and spits at staff. Furby takes an aggressive step forward towards the portal to her cubby. Staff pulls their hand out of the kennel with the bowl and Furby backs up and resumes curling back up when staff is out of the main area of the cubby and blinks at staff. Furby repeats the hissing, spitting and lunging when the bowls are placed back in through the side-hole of the cubby. Interaction is ended after to not increase FAS. 1/3 Furby is hiding in her den upon approach. When the den cover is lifted she displays dilated pupils and hisses at staff. Furby is offered slow blinks and hisses again. 1/6 Furby has her head leaning out of her den upon approach. When the shorline cover is lifted and she swats, spits and hisses. VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Furby has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
