Animal Profile

Sashita

Hello, my name is Sashita. My animal id is #207366. I am a female black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/11/2024, with the surrender reason stated as poor match - behavior/temperament of existing pet.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Sashita needs at risk placement for medical reasons. She is an adult cat with a respiratory infection. She has a poor appetite and is losing weight in shelter. She needs a quiet environment to recover. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! Sashita tolerates attention and petting but appears to be moderately fearful or stressed in the shelter. She will likely need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that she go to a home with some cat experience preferred or at least be well counseled in fearful cat behavior. Due to the behavior shown, she may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced. A volunteer writes: To me, Sashita is a shy, gentle, girl that needs a quiet home to decompress in and live her best life. As I reached my hand in to her kennel she stayed in her relaxed position and accepted the head pets I had to offer. I think she enjoyed them because at one point she closed her eyes. I can tell that she has love to give but she is a bit nervous and is waiting for the right home to be patient with her while she comes out of her shell. She was a sweet girl sniffing my head and then allow head pets.

My medical notes are...

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow,Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Inappropriate elimination,Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Sashita's previous owner reports that she was eliminating outside of the litter box. Her previous living situation may have contributed to the behavior seen (she shared a single litter box with 3 other cats using scented litter and a litter box liner). Although we believe the reported elimination issues are due to these insufficiencies, we cannot be sure whether this behavior will continue in a different home environment. We recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment. During the two week litter box observation period, she was reported to have 1 litter box accident, urinating on her linens.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: Due to fearfulness, no children under 13 years old. Counselor discretion is advised.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 8/14/24: Upon approach Sashita was crouched in her den with dilated pupils shying away from the scratch tool. She gave a slow-blink and once contact was made, she accepted pets all over. The assessor then petted her by hand and she leaned in very slightly to neck pets. She was calm and relaxed when the assessor simulated pick up by applying gentle pressure on her abdomen for 10 seconds. 9/13/24: Sashita's behavior has declined since her initial evaluation. She was hiding in the den lying down in loaf position with her front limbs tucked under her body and her head and ears forward, focused on the assessor with a tense body and wide eyes. She harshly hisses when reaching close to offer treats on the scratcher tool. She steps back when pet on her head and cheeks and then repeatedly bats the tool when stroking body. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. Sashita tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, she may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
