Your newly adopted pet has been diagnosed with Upper respiratory infection and the staff veterinarians are issuing a TEMPORARY waiver from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY. Follow up care at your regular veterinarian is recommended to ensure continued treatment through to the resolution of the issue. At the time of a full recovery you may choose to have your veterinarian perform the spay/neuter surgery, or make provisions to return the pet to ACC for sterilization.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Cosmo was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Kitten socialization,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Cosmo is a young cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He may be apprehensive of people, but the behavior team believes he has potential to warm up to people. Kittens less than 8 weeks of age can be socialized by almost anyone; however, kittens between 2-4 months may require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques. Cosmo also has a significant eye injury that may be causing him to be more subdued and stressed in the shelter. He appears wary of human contact but not showing any defensive behaviors.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 2

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Upon approach, Cosmo is lying down but alert toward the back of his litter box. He looks up at the assessor as they approach and talk softly to him. His ears are neutral and his eyes are mostly obscured by his injury and illness at this time. He is offered treats and a hand to sniff, but he remains unmoving with no reaction. When he is initially pet gently on his head, he shuffles backward slightly, but then remains in place, looking up at the assessor quietly. He tolerates all petting on his head, the sides of his face and along his back. He is easily lifted and set back down with no issue. It is difficult to tell Cosmo's temperament as he appears subdued by his injury/illness. However he allows all handling with no defensive behaviors shown, seeming to indicate some level of socialization to humans. Cosmo tolerates attention and petting but appears to be moderately fearful or stressed in the shelter. He will likely need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that he go to a home with some cat experience preferred or at least be well counseled in fearful cat behavior and are prepared to take extra steps to help him feel comfortable and secure while he heals from his eye injury. He would also benefit from continued socialization and should have adopters prepared to do so.
