Hello, my name is Cersei. My animal id is #226003. I am a female brown dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/1/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

She is tolerant of handling with staff but spends most of her time out hiding, shaking in fear. Medically, she is obese. Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form. Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Cersei is a gentle soul who's having a very hard time in the shelter environment. At 8 years old, she finds the noise and constant activity overwhelming. Right now, Cersei is extremely fearful-she trembles in her kennel and is too scared to walk on leash. Even in her fear, she has never escalated. Cersei needs a quiet, patient home where she can decompress and feel safe. She would do best as the only dog, in a calm, stable environment with someone who understands that trust takes time. With gentle care and consistency, Cersei has the potential to blossom into a loving and loyal companion. Her previous owners say she is incredibly loving, caring and affectionate. She loves soft toys to chew on.

Summary:: Due to a high level of fear, Cersei is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary:: Cersei has been in multiple altercations with F LMB resident dog. She would likely do best as a single pet.
Summary (1):: Cersei is a sweet, affectionate dog who spends most of her time lounging in the bedroom, living up to her laid-back, couch potato personality. She’s crate trained and did very well with a black metal crate for the first six years of her life, though she hasn't used one since being rehomed. While she has access to a yard, she doesn't enjoy leash walks and will lie down rather than move forward. Grooming can be a challenge, as she’s fearful and uncomfortable with bathing or brushing. In the car, she tends to have accidents, so a pee pad or plastic liner is recommended for travel. Cersei knows basic cues like "sit," "stay," and "no," and her previous owner described her as incredibly loving and caring. Her favorite pastimes include chewing on stuffed animals and simply relaxing in her cozy space.
Summary (7):: 5.10- Cersei began to wag her tail when a familiar staff member approached the kennel. Once kennel door was opened, Cersei retreated to the back of the kennel shaking. Staff member had to enter the kennel and leash her. Staff member began calling her over and Cersei walked out of the room slowly to the yard. Once in the yard, she began to explore. She approached staff member and allowed petting on her back and then walked away. She was leashed and walked back to her kennel after a few minutes. Once in the kennel, she retreated to the back and began to shake. 5/7/25: Cersei is barking behind her blocker as staff enter the room. Upon approach, she retreats to her bed and begins to urinate in fear. She is on her kuranda with her head against the wall making it difficult to secure the lead. Handler steps into her kennel and once the lead is secured gives her a tug until she walks on her own. She follows handler out of the building, taking breaks on the way to the yard. A drag leash is attached and she remains by the entrance of the yard. At the end of the session she is tolerant of all handling, securing the slip lead, unclipping the drag and safety clipping the lead. She rushes back to kennel. 05.05 Cersei is laying on her bed visibly shaking. She keep her head against the kuranda bed and can not be leashed. Handler stays at the front of her kennel speaking to her. She tolerates petting on her back continuing to shake. She lifts her head and handler is able to leash her. The leash is tugged on and she stand and begins to walk. She balks when leaving the room and leash is tugged and follows. We walk towards the ramp and she relieves herself. She walks most of the way down the ramp then begins to walk back towards the building. She is brought into meet and greet, and allows handler to collar her and attach a drag leash. A blanket is placed on the floor and Cersei lays down on it shaking. We sit together is the room quietly for Cersei remains in this position. She is easily returned to kennel. 05.04 Cersei is laying in the back of her kennel shaking, avoiding the leash and looking away. The leash needs to be tugged for her to stand and walk out of dog holding. She begins to walk and pulls towards small yard. Cersei relieves herself and tucks herself into a corner shaking. She lays down and doesn't move from that spot. When being returned, handler has to tug on the leash again for her to stand and begin to walk. She walks into her kennel and settles on her bed.

Summary:: tense but allowed handling
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to high level of fear, we recommend a home with no children. Single-pet home: Cersei lived with two other dogs over 3 years ago. She was in 4 incidents with the resident female dog. We believe she would be happiest as a single pet. Recommend no dog parks: Due to her past incidents with another dog, we recommend Cersei does not go to the dog park.
Potential challenges: : Fearful,Anxiety,Bite history (dog)
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Cersei is highly fearful in the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Cersei the option to walk away from any social interaction. Cersei should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Cersei’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Cersei would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see handout on Fearful. Bite history (dog): Cersei was involved in 4 incidents with another resident dog. The previous owner described the other dog as the instigator however; Cersei had to defend herself and has a bite to another dog in her history. Please see handout on Bite History. Anxiety: Cersei appears anxious at the care center, often shaking in fear and refusing to walk. If Cersei displays anxious behavior in her future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.
