Animal Profile

Marv

Hello, my name is Marv. My animal id is #232253. I am a male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 7/16/2025.

Marv is on the at-risk list due to medical concerns. Marv has severe and chronic otitis that is not able to be managed in shelter. He will require extensive/ongoing medical management and/or unilateral or bilateral TECAs. Behaviorally, Marv is social with staff and seeks attention. Has shown sensitivity to touch around neck/ears which we believe is due to his medical concerns.

[Spay/Neuter Waiver - Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 07/20/25 Marv is introduced at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Marv is initially reluctant to approach the gate as does the novel female dog. Marv displays a tense frame walking past the gate line looking in the direction of the novel female dog, quickly looking away, becoming aloof. The novel female dog appears nervous as she pants heavily, pulling away from the gate line when escorted over while Marv displace scents away from the gate. Marv ignores the novel female dog for the remainder of the interaction while the novel female dog remains avoidant. Marv is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (7):: 07/20/25 (playgroup): Marv is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He takes treats gently from hand and allows handler to clip his harness. Marv walks on a loose lead out to the yard for playgroup (see Dog-to-Dog Summary for further details). Marv will approach handler and leans into scratches on his hind end. He takes treats gently from hand. After his session, Marv is returned to kennel safely. 07/18/25 (Assessment Note): Marv is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose and wiggly body and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He is then brought to the assessment room, where he tolerates handlers placing a harness on him while he eats cheese. Marv solicits attention by sitting in front of the handlers, waiting for treats, and allows handling over his body while maintaining a soft and wiggly frame. Marv is brought back to his kennel safely without any issues. For more information, see behavior assessment.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful: During his medical exan he displayed a wiggly and loose body, allows handling for exam and most intake tasks, head whips and vocalizes when attempting injections/blood draw.Marv displays sensitivity to touch, as evidenced by head-whipping with a closed mouth when lightly touched around his neck and during the handling assessor avoid touching his face and ears due to his medical. This response suggests discomfort with physical contact and should be addressed through slow, positive desensitization to handling, using consent-based touch and reinforcing calm behavior during low-pressure interactions. Please see the handout on decompression period and Handling/touch sensitivity.
