Pre-Screener FormGoku is at risk due to behavioral concerns. His owners report Goku has destructive tendencies in the home and will guard resources around other dogs. Goku has also been observed in care to accept treats with hard pressure and has allowed minimal handling in care, often whale eyeing and becoming tense when attempting to handle him. Upon intake, Goku was nervous but with time, began to take treats. He allowed staff to leash but moved away when staff attempted to scan for MC. He allowed owners to scan and remove harness/collar. Goku was not scanned for MC due to him moving away from staff. He easily walked with staff and into the kennel.

Goku previously lived with multiple dogs in his previous home. 8/12/26: Goku is introduced to a novel intact female and approaches the fence with a neutral body and low tail, raising it to slow mid level wags while sniffing nose to nose through the fence. He disengages when the other dog walks away and the two reapproach the fence and Goku gives mid level wags with a soft face. He is let into the yard and begins engaging in mutual sniffing while remaining loose. The other dog leaps on him twice and he is tolerant and bounces out from underneath her, play bowing. He begins knocking her hard and vocalizing in her face, the two are separated due to his arousal. He is then introduced to a familiar spayed female and is loose at the gate. When face to face, he spins and play bows, soliciting start stop play. He is very vocal and will growl on and off while remaining loose and bouncy. 8/8/26: Goku is introduced to a novel intact female and is avoidant and sniffs around the yard. The other dog is let into the yard and Goku immediately flags over standing tall with a forward leaning body and helicopter wags, and stands on the other dog's back with a front leg while sniffing his ears and head. He is pulled off and begins play bowing and spinning, play slapping the other dog and play grunting. The other dog begins attempting to hump him and Goku is tolerant but the other dog begins escalating and the two are separated. 8/1/26: Goku is introduced to a novel intact male and approaches the fence with a neutral body and soft eyes. The other dog is reactive and snapping at him through the fence, Goku does not react back but is tense with a high flagged tail. ENERGY LEVEL:: Goku is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Goku.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior, we recommend an adult only home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Separation anxiety,Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Goku will growl at other dogs when they approach his toys. He will not guard otherwise. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Goku's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Destructive behavior: Goku is noted have Destructive tendencies (furniture, walls, shoes, household items, etc.). Goku will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Basic manners: Goku is noted in the prior home to jump up often of non-stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Mouthiness: Goku is noted to become mouthy and take treats roughly in the prior home. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy, and ending play or attention whenever Goku puts teeth on skin. They should be rewarded with attention and treats when they stop and/or when they are seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Handling/touch sensitivity: Goku is noted in the prior home to become fearful when held/restrained and when pushed/pull off furniture. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Goku to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful: In the prior home Goku is noted to become fearful when startled. While in care, Goku has been observed to show whale eye and freeze when handlers attempt to interact with him. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Goku would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period.
