Animal Profile

Chase

Hello, my name is Chase. My animal id is #86266. I am a desexed male black dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/15/2020, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.

Reserved

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Chase was placed at risk due to behavioral concerns; Because Chase was observed to rapidly escalate to lunging and biting a handler during an interaction ("see in shelter observations"), we feel as though he is not a suitable candidate for public adoption at this time. The behavior department believes Chase may be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner who can reassess his behavior in a more stable home environment before seeking permanent placement. Chase was diagnosed with CIRDC and is reported to be vomiting at this time.

Date of assessment:: 1/17/2020

Summary:: Chase is not an appropriate candidate for a handling assessment at this time due to previously lunging and biting a handler in the care center.

Summary:: According to Chase's previous owner, he was not socialized with other dogs while in their care. 1/16: When off leash at the Care Center, Chase is introduced to a novel female dog. He greets the female with whines and stands on his tiptoes. Due to the female's inexperience and intensity, his leash is held. Chase pulls hard towards the female and attempts to jump her. The female becomes uncomfortable with Chase's behaviors and avoids him for the remainder of the session.

Date of intake:: 1/15/2020

Summary:: Allowed handling

Date of initial:: 1/16/2020

Summary:: Allowed all handling, wagging; whale eyed and muzzled for treatments

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 1/25: When greeting a potential foster, Chase approached him with a neutral posture. The foster began to pet and hug him when he jumped up, vocalized and snapped at the fosters chest area. He was immediately pulled away then refocus with treats. The longer he was outside the more he became frustrated and began biting the rope. The handler used treats and toys to redirect him. 1/17: When bringing Chase into the behavior room to fit for a harness, he hard barked at the broom and dustpan. He was refocused with treats and was cued to sit. The handler placed a harness on him, and while adjusting the front strap, he lunged and bit near the chest area. He has immediately pulled away and returned to his kennel. The handler did not have broken skin.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how quickly Chase has been observed to escalate when uncomfortable, we feel as though he would be best set up to succeed if placed into an experienced adult only home environment. Place with a New Hope partner: In the care center, Chase has been observed to allow and tolerate some handling, however, when uncomfortable Chase has been observed to escalate rapidly to higher level warning signals and threatening behavior. Because Chase was observed to rapidly escalate to lunging and biting a handler during an interaction ("see in shelter observations"), we feel as though he is not a suitable candidate for public adoption at this time. The behavior department believes Chase may be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner who can reassess his behavior in a more stable home environment before seeking permanent placement. We highly advise seeking guidance from a professional and qualified veterinary behaviorist or trainer (force-free, reward based training only) as well as exercising safe and appropriate management.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: While Chase's previous owner describes him as a friendly, outgoing dog, in the care center he has been observed to become uncomfortable quickly, tensing and hard barking. Chase has also been observed to rapidly escalate to lunging and biting a handler when uncomfortable (see "in shelter observations"). Should these concerns arise in a future home environment we advise seeking the guidance of a professional trainer or veterinary behaviorist; please also see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression as well as handout on Bite history.
