A volunteer writes: I grin ear to ear looking down on Atreus as we walk down the street. I feel like I am walking a black potbellied pig! He is so low to the ground with a strut that turns heads. He is an unbelievably cute dog, with unfortunately cropped ears. A 44lb meatball and I love everything about him! We first met Atreus back in May of this year. Then he was emaciated, but thankfully now he has filled out. We play a game of fetch with him that seems to move in slow motion, because that is the speed Atreus moves at. But he has fun and we love watching him trot back and forth! Atreus was originally brought here in May, when police were called to remove him from a home by a landlord. The officer said the dogs were alone in a room with fecal matter on the floor and no food or water. He was quickly adopted, but returned a few weeks ago due to not being a good fit in a busy home. He lived with 2 children, and though he was described as tolerant with them, he would do best without very young kids. He was described as exuberant around other dogs. His recent guardians also describe him as friendly and affectionate, say he loves to cuddle and be close to them. Here's what my friends at ACC say: About me:I am playful and cute! My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. My ideal home:I'll need daily interaction with you as I get used to my new life. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I am not one to sit still and will love interactive playtime in my new home! I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy.

Summary:: Atreus was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. 9/28/22: Atreus returns to play group to meet a novel female dog. He is loose and sexually motivated with a high flagging tail. 5/26: When off leash at the Care Center, Atreus is introduced to a novel female dog. He greets her with a neutral posture before walking away to check in with handlers.
Summary (2):: 12/12/22: When the handler approaches Atreus kennel he is standing and biting his kennel bars with a bloody mouth. the handler is easily able to refocus him with treats. The handler opens the kennel door which allows the handler to easily leash him. The handler leads Atreus out of the kennel room to the hallway where the handler tosses him treats and clips the leash to his harness. He walks on a loose leash down the hallway and then continues when exiting Care Center. On walk, he remains calm and loose body. The handler reclips Atreus and leads him back inside the care center, Atreus mildly pulls down the hallway to the kennel room. Once inside the kennel room, Atreus returns to his kennel with treats and allows the handler to remove the leash.
Summary (3):: 12/7/22 (PM): Atreus is standing near the front of his kennel vocalizing with a neutral body and wagging his tail when the handler approaches. The handler offers Atreus treats and is able to leash him easily. He pulls moderately out of the kennel; when the handler leads Atreus to the assessment room to clip the leash onto the harness, he collapses outside the door. After a moment he is able to stand up and is brought into the assessment room. A second handler distracts Atreus with treats as the first handler clips the leash to his harness. He is then led to the play yard for his walk. Atreus maintains a neutral body for the duration of the interaction, checking in with the handler frequently to solicit treats. After Atreus relieves himself, he is led back into the care center, pulling with moderate tension on the leash. Outside of the kennel room, the second handler distracts Atreus with treats again due to a reported bite earlier in the day as the first handler attempts to leash him and unclip his harness. Atreus head whips towards the first handler who steps back. The second handler refocuses Atreus with more treats and the first handler is able to successfully leash Atreus. He is then led back to his kennel where he collapses in front of the kennel. Once he recovers, he enters his kennel without further issue. 12/7: When a handler removes Atreus from his kennel for his morning walk, the handler attempts to clip his harness once in the hallway. Atreus is highly anxious and bites the handler's hand as she attempts to clip the harness. The bite does not break the skin and the handler seeks assistance from another handler to clip the harness while offering treats.
Summary (4):: 12/3/22: Atreus is laying on his bed when the handler approaches, seeing handler Atreus come forward offering his soft plush toy against the bars of his kennel. The handler leashes Atreus by attaching the leash to his harness, Atreus grabs the handler's treat pouch refusing to let go even when offered his plush toy; the handler lets him keep the treat pouch. The handler leads Atrus out of the kennel room; Atreus displays a high tail walking with a treat pouch in his mouth. The handler leads Atreus into the Behavior room and offers various treats and toys to trade, Atreus takes the beef liver treat and takes back his plush toy. The handler is able to retrieve the treats pouch and led him outside of the room. Atreus mildly pulls down the hallway, once outside Atreus drops a plush toy and relieves himself. Atreus abandons the toy and focuses on the handler soliciting treats throughout the walk. Atreus remains on a loose leash ignoring dogs and people passing by. The handler reclips Atreus and leads him back inside the care center, Atreus mildly pulls down the hallway to the kennel room. Once inside the kennel room, Atreus returns to his kennel with treats and allows the handler to remove the leash. 11/20/2022 When the handler approaches, Atreus is vocal, body loose, tail wagging. The handler tosses him some treats in which Atreus devours, while the handler leashes him. Once leashed, Atreus jumps and tries to bite the doggy bag dispenser on the handler's pouch. The handler straightens their arms and proceeds to leave kennel room. In the hallway, Atreus attempts to do the same thing, this time, the handler gives Atreus a few treats and proceeds quickly outside. Once outside, Atreus calms down and walks moderately. Along the walk, Atreus defecates and urinates. At this point, the handler directs Atreus back to the facility. Once in the building, Atreus walks back to the kennel room with ease and enters his kennel. 11/05/22: Atreus was in front of his kennel when handler approached. As handler came toward him, he waited with a neutral body for handler to open the door and was leashed with ease with use of treats. He is led to the hallway where he eagerly accepts tossed treats and allows handlers to switch their leash onto his harness. He applies mild tension on leash as he walks to the play yard where he remains neutral and takes more treats, allowing handler to adjust his harness. He walks out pulling with light/mild pressure on leash and immediately relieves himself. He allows collaring and sits for treats with a soft body. He remains fairly neutral/relaxed for the duration of the walk and maintains a loose leash. He looks at dogs curiously as he passes them from afar and naturally refocuses. He snatches treats out of the air with force. He becomes slightly uncomfortable when handler re-clips his leash, displaying a slow head turn and lip lick, but he recovers to neutral. He is led back to kennel and hops in without issue. 6/15: Atreus was at the front of his kennel and was easily leashed. he is taken to the assessment room and fitted with a harness. Handler took him for a brief relief walk and he remained neutral and non-reactive to dogs and pedestrians passing by. He turned to look at handler often, soliciting treats. He took them gently from her hand. He was led to the assessment room where he remained neutral, sniffed around to find treat crumbs, and would return to the handler and nudge them for treats. He eventually sat in between handler's legs and accepting petting, slowly relaxing his body and gently nudging handler whenever they stopped petting. He was re-leashed and led back to kennel with ease.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to Atreus' potential for defensive aggression and his bite history, we recommend an adult-only home for Atreus to be best set up for success. Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Atreus be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Atreus to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward-based training only is advised when introducing Atreus to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Atreus presents with outside of the care centers.
Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Destructive Behavior/Separation Anxiety: Atreus is reported to destroy his crate, destroy household items when left alone. It is unknown if any steps were taken to modify these behaviors. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior & Separation Anxiety. Atreus was reported to have snapped at a family member and escalated to biting another different family member. Neither broke skin but clothing was ripped. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression & Bite History
