Milo tried to go underneath the bed and the owner went to grab him from behind. Milo then jerked and bit the owner on the pinky. Summary:: Milotic has been observed to be highly fearful while in care. Noted to be tense, fearful, and dodges the leash while in kennel. When handlers attempt to leash him, Milotic is noted to retreat to the back of the kennel, snap at the leash, and vocalize when it's on him. Due to the high level of fear, stress, and anxiety observed, Milotic is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (6):: 7/13/26: Milotic is lying down at the front of the kennel with a tense face. Handler approaches and crouches down at the front of the kennel. Handler offers treats and he does not take them. The kennel is unlocked and Milotic retreats to the back of the kennel. Handler presents the leash and he approaches slowly and then retreats to the back, whale eyeing the leash. He repeats this a few times as the handler tries to leash him. Handler then attempts to lasso's Milotic. He is retreats to the back and bucks back attempting to mouth and snap at the leash. Handler is able to successfully lasso Milotic and gets the leash on him. He exits the kennel and pulls moderately out towards the driveway. He paces back and forth around the driveway in a frantic manner with a tense body. He relieves himself a few times before he is walked back into the shelter and towards the backyard. Milotic's body softens and he walks around the yard. He sniffs around and relieves himself a few more times before he is walked back inside. Handler calls to him to pre-clip his leash and he looks to the handler with a soft body and soft tail wag. He is easily clipped and walked back to his kennel where he is returned without issue.

Summary (7):: 7/11/26: Milotic was lying down on his bed at back of kennel as handler approached. When leashing Milotic would avoid the leash and a couple of times cry out when the leash touched him. After several attempts handler was finally able to leash Milotic, but once leashed he screamed and thrashed for a few seconds. When on of the dogs in a crate barks at him he jumps and stops walking, handler offers vocal encouragement and he starts moving again. A couple of noises outside also caused him to freeze and it takes him a few seconds to reset himself. Handler offers him a few different types of treat (non high value) and he refuses them. While he is distracted handler clips his leash for the return. He is returned to kennel with no issue. 7/9/26 (PM): Milotic is at the back of his kennel looking at the handler; Milotic sits up to avoid the leash as the handler reaches in to lasso him. Once he is leashed, Milotic refuses to move. The handler applies gentle and continual leash pressure to bring Milotic to the front; he thrashes a bit and resists for the most part. Once he's right at the kennel's opening, Milotic exits; he gets startled and briefly baulks when the dogs begin to bark, but he walks out the oom. The handler brings him to the yard; he resist to go up one set of stairs, as he resists the leash pressure gently applied. The handler goes up the other side, and with soft voice and gentle leash pressure, Milotic climbs up the stairs. The handler walks Milotic around the yard's perimeter, which he does with mild leash tension. As he is brought into a playpen, Milotic sniffs around but doesn't relieve himself. The handler calls for his attention by saying his name and using a squeaker, and he turns to look at them, but doesn't fully engage; he briefly sniffs their hand when it's presented. While walking back towards the building, Milotic sniffs another dog through a shared fence, but doesn't react. The handler clips their leash and brings Milotic into a new kennel, which he enters with ease. 07/09/26 (AM): Milotic is at the back of his kennel as handler approaches, he looks up at handler and has a tense body while lip licking occasionally. He is offered treats near the front of the kennel by handler who tosses them near him but he does not accept any. Handler then opens the kennel door and produces their leash, approaching slowly and lassoing it over Milotic's head. He does not escalate but flinches when the leash makes contact with him initially. Once leashed handler stands near the side of the kennel door to allow Milotic to exit kennel, he stays frozen in place and is unable to be coaxed by handler, handler uses very light leash pressure which is also ineffective at getting him to walk so to stop further stress handler grabs a hook and uses it to slowly remove the leash from Milotic which he sniffs before allowing. Interaction is ended once leash is removed from Milotic.

Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Milo's previous owner states that he has accidents in the home a few times a week. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Resource Guarding: Milo's previous owner states that he will growl, bark, become tense, hover, snap, and attempt to bite when in the possession of food and treats. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Milo's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Destructive Behavior: Milo's previous owner states that he is destructive in the home and will chew on toilet paper. Milo will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Basic Manners: Milo's previous owner states that he will jump up on people non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Handling Sensitivity: Milo's previous owner states that he will lunge and bite when held/restrained and will bark, growl, and lunge when his paws are touched. He will also bark and growl when his collar is touched. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Milo to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive: Milo has been observed to vocalize loudly, retreat, and snap at the leash when handlers attempt to leash him. It is important to move slowly with Milo, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people.
