Flamenco
Hello, my name is Flamenco. My animal id is #253284. I am a male gray tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/29/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- hoarding situation.
Flamenco is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association and appears likely to be under socialized. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

We don't know his favorite treats or toys and we don't know if he prefers watching squirrels or birds from his favorite window perches but in spite of our sincerest efforts, Flamenco hasn't felt much like filling in the gaps. We do know, however, that Flamenco's been picking up the pieces as he tries to navigate the shelter. He was brought to us from a home with many other cats and these substantial changes have left Flamenco a bit confused and unsure on where to put all of his love, but it has to go somewhere. We're thinking with a patient and loving family, he'll explain who he is and become the cat he's meant to be.

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
KNOWN HISTORY:: Flamenco was brought in without information on his behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5/3/26 Vol. Resting in den, out of sight. Had not come out to eat any breakfast. Raised the cover to peek and was facing forward in sphinx position. Looked around curiously with dilated eyes, then backed away. Did not investigate treats on the tool. I moved the food tray into his den and checked back after 5 minutes, had not eaten food or treats. 5/5/26 Vol. Lying down in privacy cubby. Sniffed at Squeeze-ups but didn’t eat any. He then got startled by something and ran into other cubby and sat in his litter box. Gave him a Furfalle and some tuna but he just continued to sit there and never moved. 5/8/26 FB09 Flamenco was lying down in the back of his kennel, his eyes neutral and his ears slightly flattened. He began returning slow blinks as the handler offered him treats. He sniffed the treats and remained still for a bit before slowly beginning to lick the treats up, continuing to return slow blinks. He began to tense up and shake when transitioning to pets along his head and body. 05/11/26 FB47 Flamenco was asleep on the shelf and became very watchful when woken up, and he ignored squeeze up treats when approached with them. Very quickly, he jumped down and moved into the cubby, allowing the briefest of pets as he exited the main kennel. Scent enrichment was given. 5/13/26 Seems under the weather sniffling, resting on the ledge, allowing pets along the head and body while he remains still. 5/16/36 FB73 Flamenco is laying in his litter box in his cubby, head lowered and body tense as the handler approaches. When the cubby door is opened, his ears go back and he hisses once. He is offered crunchy treats but does not show interest in them. A squeeze up is offered on the scratcher tool and he remains tense with his ears back as it is held in front of him. He sniffs it briefly before pulling back and not taking it. Interaction is ended and treat is left in the kennel with him. 5/17/26 Vol. Resting in litter box, head sunk low to try to hide. Started shaking when door was opened to give cup of treats. Allowed head scratches with the tool, but flattened ears to head and hissed a bit. Checked back after 5 minutes and hadn't eaten. 5/19/26 FB73 Flamenco is laying towards the back of his top shelf, curled up. When the cubby door is opened and he is softly spoken to, he tenses, ears back and observing the handler with dilated pupils. He tolerates brief petting on the head with the scratcher tool before hissing, ears going further back. A squeeze up is offered but he does not respond to it. Did return some slow blinks after some time! Treat is left on a tray in the kennel with him and interaction is ended. GAN
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow,Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Sweet,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization
Potential challenges comments:: Flamenco is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is very apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, he does attempt to flee and avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques. It is possible that he is just situationally fearful and may in fact improve over time.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 6/2/26 Update: He remains fearful of people and was pushed up against the back of the cubby. He hissed when approached and ignored treats. He is not improving. 5/2/26 Flemenco was inside the den, appearing fearful with moderately dilated pupils and exhibited some potential desire to flee, moving to the back of the kennel and looking for a way to get out. He was breathing somewhat rapidly and shaking slightly and did not sniff treats when presented with them, but then allowed to be pet with a scratcher tool and then allowed to be pet on his head and his cheeks with the assessor’s hand. He did not seem to really appreciate this petting and remained in place and remained somewhat fearful. It’s possible that he’s not fully socialized, but we’re hopeful that with time he may improve. Pick up was not attempted, as he remained in the den the entire time. Flamenco tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
