The incident did cause skin breakage however her daughter did not receive medical attention, (DOH HOLD WAS DONE AT HOME). ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5/23/26 Vol. in the den throughout interaction. Ate the offered dry treats on scratcher tool and then ate the squeeze up offered on same tool. reached head out through den portal door to eat squeeze up but only up to a point. will go back into the den and growling. Moving around inside den and sounds like he's scratching the bottom of the den. 5/29/26 FB20 Leonardo appears to be feeling much better! He is inside his den sneezing but pokes his head out for squeeze up on clicker. Then he comes all the way out of the den, tail high as he approaches the handlers for head scratches. He scent marks his cheekies on their hand and has a high tail when pet along his body. When the door is closed, he continues to stay at the front and accept head scratches from a different handler on his head. 5/29/26 Vol. Leonardo was inside the den upon approach facing the window. He licked his lips twice while being spoken to softly. He partially emerged from the den to eat a wet treat from a tray, then moved to the front of the kennel to eat Fancy Feast. Leonardo allowed petting on the head and light petting along the back. He then head-butted my hand and leaned in for additional petting. He was left with a plush toy and a peacock feather. 5/31/26 Vol. There was a lot going on in holding when I was there, and I think all the activity got Leonardo a little wound up. He was sitting upright in the front of his kennel and would stick out a paw whenever anyone got too close to the kennel. I didn’t want to get him further wound up, so, I offered him squeeze-up through the kennel door, which he gobbled up. He allowed a brief, gentle cheek rub. And then I ended the interaction, since the tip of his tail was flicking around quickly. 6/3/26 FB73 Leonardo was sitting at the front, pawing outside of the kennel door to solicit attention. He allows petting on the head and cheeks before beginning to tail flick. Leonardo is offered a squeeze up on the tool and quickly begins eating it. 6/5/26 Vol. Came down from top of hidey box as I was reading kennel card - rubbing against the bars. Dived right into treat bowl, eating greedily, allowing head scratches with hand while eating, tail flicking. Pulled back a little to wait for refill and then dived back in, allowing scratches. Refilled bowl and ended interaction. 06/06/26 FB47 Leonardo was in the cubby, quiet, relaxed, and very sweet, and is doing well. He allowed petting on the head while remaining sweet and quiet. He ate treats and remained in place. 6/6/27 FB20 Leonardo is at the front of the kennel. He solicits attention with a high tail, and then sees movement outside the room. He freezes and begins low grumbling, before trying to flee back into his den. The handler opens his den for him and he curls up inside with wide, dilated eyes. 6/10/26 Social by the front. Soft body with tail high. Enjoys offered treats and appreciates attention.

Potential challenges comments:: See relevant behavior flyers. Leonardo was reported to attack his tail in the home and while he was first at the Care Center, this same behavior was also observed. In the home, Leonardo would bite his tail when he would hear loud noises, like her young children screaming and running throughout the home, and when the other cat was running around. This tail biting behavior improved in the Care Center when Leonardo was prescribed gabapentin. It is recommended dispense gabapentin for Leonardo on gabapentin when adopted, and to then have the adopter follow up with a private veterinarian for further guidance before discontinuing him from the medication. Leonardo should be given a slow introduction to the home, one room at a time starting in a small room like a bathroom with food, litter and water, because prior owner notes and behaviors seen at the Care Center [fearful, reactive to loud noises] strongly suggest that he will hide if allowed. Interact with him in this room until he seems sufficiently confident that you feel you can introduce him to the next part of the home without running the risk that he will hide. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to help introduce your cat to the home.

Recommendations comments:: Due to Leonardo's bite/scratch history, he would be best suited for an adult-only home and a quiet, calm home environment. Due to behavior reported in the home with the resident cat, the behavior team recommends a home with no other cats.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 5/22/26 Leonardo was crouched in his den with wide, dilated eyes and his paws tucked close to his body. He hissed when the den cover opened but then quickly leaned for treats. He cautiously accepted some head pets by hand while eating but was mostly alert of outside noises, frantically scanning the room with dilated eyes. When petting along his back with the scratcher tool and adding slight pressure to his side to simulate a pickup, he retreated farther back in the den and began low growling. 6/21/26 Leonardo is standing at the back of the kennel, pupils slightly dilated but body otherwise neutral as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened, he leans forward to sniff the assessor's hand before head bunting it, allowing and leaning into all petting. He is tolerant of extended petting and accepts crunchy treats when they are offered. When noises begin to occur in the room, Leonardo freezes and begins tail flicking. Pickup is not attempted to avoid overstimulation. 7/21/26 Leonardo is standing at the front of the kennel, leaning against the kennel bars to solicit attention as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened, he head bunts the assessor's hand, allowing and leaning into petting on the head and cheeks for a bit before tensing, backing away, and lip licking. Treats are offered and he quickly begins eating them, remaining a bit tense but allowing a bit more petting on the head before backing away and staring hard at the assessor's hand. Pickup is not attempted due to observed behavior. Leonardo tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
