Pre-Screener Form

Ranch Dressin is at risk due to behavioral concerns. He has been involved in several bite incidents that did not break the skin, though most resulted in red marks. These incidents primarily occurred during handling procedures, such as collaring, leashing, or putting on a coat. He has also been reported to escalate to lunging in some situations. Recently, he was observed to lick his kennel walls. On walks, Ranch Dressin is social with staff and enjoys treats while being petted. Medically, Ranch Dressin has diarrhea.

Ranch Dressin came to ACC as a stray, so we don't have any information on how he is in a home environment. Ranch has been timid with a low body when interacting with most staff. Over time, Ranch Dressin has warmed up slightly to familiar handlers, taking treats when approached slowly. Ranch Dressin would do best in a quiet, low-traffic environment where he can decompress and show off his true colors. Ranch Dressin came into the care center as an owner surrender after being returned due to behavioral concerns in the home. The prior owner says he loves any kind of treat and is a good eater loves pup cup Greek yogurt and pumpkin and steak. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Ranch Dressin to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Ranch Dressin to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Ranch Dressin presents with outside of the care centers.

Due to his fearfulness, a handling assessment will not be condcuted at this time. 4/1/26: Ranch dressin is taken to the behavioral office for a handling assessment. He is noted to become fearful when passing dogs barking in their kennels. Once in the office, he displays whale eyes, semi shakes off his body and lip licks. He takes treats with mild pressure but remains avoidant of collaring. Due to his fearfuness he is given more time to decompress.

Summary:: Ranch Dressin arrived at the care centers as a stray, so we are unsure of his history with other dogs. 4/24/26: Ranch Dressin greets a novel female dog at the gate. Ranch Dressin approaches with a neutral body, high flagging tail and begins to hypersalivate and mark along the fence line. Due to his behavior, the dogs do not past the barrier.

Summary (6):: 6/5/26: Ranch Dressin is observed to be licking his kennel walls, and is also observed to have to be leashed while a staff member walked a bit into his kennel due to him dodging the leash. 5/25: While outside, the handler observed multiple perople and dogs walk past Ranch Dressing multiple times. Throughout this time, Ranch was very calm, even when the another handler was initially standing right outside the door, in very close proximity to other dogs. He just sat on the edge of the sidewalk, calmly observing, for this long period of time, during which he was exposed to numerous dogs, some of which reacted to him and even lunged in his direction. 5/13 : Ranch Dressin came to the front of his kennel with a loose body upon approach, standing on the door as the door was unlocked He was guided down with a treat but did retreat upon seeing the leash. Treats were used a lure and he was then easily leashed. He walk out of the shelter and towards the play pens with no pulling. We passed a dog in one of the pens and no reactivity was present, walking past with a loose body. Once in the pen he was switched to a drag leash, again showing hesitation around his neck, treats were used to clip. Handler sat on the bench and he approached with a loose body, he was receptive to treats and at times mouthy (taking with some pressure). He was asked to sit and he did so readily, calmy taking treats after. He solicited contact and would lay his head on the handlers lap. He appreciated pets and would stay when handler gave him the chance to walk away. At times he showed interest in the treat pouch but did not push for it. Very sweet boy. Once it was time to leave, he did again back away from the slip lead but put his head through with a treat lure, he was unclipped (treat used as a distraction), and we left. He walks at my side, and eventually walked ahead but did not pull. Upon entering the dog rooms/getting closer to his kennel he did begin to pull more, rushing in to his kennel to interact with something on his kuranda (possibly enrichment

Summary (7):: 5/14/26: Reported via whiteboard that Ranch dressin is very sweet, hesitant with leashing, but easily distracted with treats. did not react to dogs and walked well on leash, only started to pull once he got closer to kennel. Very treat receptive, can be mouthy and loves to put head on lap 05/1/26: Ranch Dressin is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose body. He is easily leash and taken to the behavioral office for a reassessment. In the office he stands near the exit door but is able to be coaxes over (Please see assessment for more details). When releashed, he lip licks and is taken back to his kennel without issues 4/21/26: Ranch Dressin is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose frame and will begin to vocalize as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and brought out to the play yard. He will jump onto the handler's treat pouch, attempting to eat out of it. He will engage in some doggie zen, catching on to the game after just a few reps. After a while, he is returned to his kennel with no issue and secured safely. 04/14/26: Ranch Dressing is standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral frame and allows handler to leash him. He is escorted to the play yard. Once inside, he flips onto his back and rubs against the grass, then remains laying for a period before standing still and observing outside the gate. He displays a lowered tail, pinned ears, open-mouth panting, and deep sniffing of the air. When the session is complete, he is returned to his kennel safely without any issues. 4/10/26: Ranch Dressin is laying down on his bed as handler approaches. He comes forward to the front and is able to be leashed with treats. He is then taken to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he is avoidant of the handlers as they attempt to collar him. He would constantly back away with a tense body and widened eyes. Due to this, his assessment is unable to be completed. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues.

No cats: Due to noted on-leash reactivity towards small animals, we reccomend he be placed in a home without small animals. Place with a New Hope partner: Ranch Dressin came into the care cneter as an owner surrender after being returned due to behavioral concerns in the home.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal,Other

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: In the prior home he is noted to have snap, lunge and bite leaving marks but didnt break skin. exhibits signs of stress including heavy panting, pacing, and avoidance of handling. Training should prioritize creating positive associations with routine interactions, using slow introduction to touch, and incorporating confidence-building exercises. A calm, predictable environment paired with reward-based handling will help reduce his anxiety and increase his comfort around people and new experiences. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggressionn. Low threshold for arousal/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Ranch Dressin has a recent history of repeated biting behavior directed at the owner, occurring more than five times, with the most recent incident on May 25, 2026. These bites have been severe enough to leave marks but have not broken the skin or required medical attention. The behavior typically occurs during handling situations such as putting on the leash, collar, or coat, as well as during walks or when given cues. Warning signs include lunging and snapping, and the bites are described as “bite and hold.” The issue appears to have begun within the past week, with no reported history of bites toward other animals. Please see the handout arousal. Handling/touch sensitivity: Ranch Dressin is noted to bites when held or restrained, when his paws or collar are touched, and also snaps when pushed or pulled off furniture. He may lunge if disturbed while resting or sleeping and becomes fearful when startled. Overall, his reactions suggest a low tolerance for handling and a tendency to respond with defensive aggression. PLease see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Leash-biting: Ranch dressing is noted to jump and bites/chews leash during walks. Training should focus on reinforcing calm leash behavior, improving engagement with the handler, and providing appropriate outlets for excess energy. Please see the handout on leash biting. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Ranch Dressin is noted to react to on walks towards Small animals (squirrels, birds, rats, etc.) by attempt to bite at them. Management should include increased distance from triggers, controlled walking environments, and redirection to help reduce reactive behaviors. Please see see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration Anxiety: Ranch dressing is noted to lick his kennel walls. This suggests difficulty coping with confinement or the kennel environment. Providing enrichment, reducing environmental stressors, and promoting calming routines may help alleviate his anxiety. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety.
