Summary:: 7/28: Beauty greets M LMB dog at the gate with her ears back, high wagging tail. He jumps up on the gate and Beauty creates distance moving back.

Summary (1):: Beauty is a social and affectionate dog who loves being around people and spends most of her time wherever her family is. She enjoys going on three to four 30-minute walks each day and walks well on a leash with only mild to moderate pulling. Beauty has never been crate trained and becomes nervous during car rides, often hyperventilating when getting into or riding in the car. She is cooperative with bathing and brushing but is fearful and uncomfortable with nail trims. Beauty knows several cues, including sit, down, stay, lay down, quiet, go, and up. Her previous owner described her as lovable, affectionate, and comforting. In her free time, Beauty enjoys playing catch and loves balls, stuffed animals, Blue Buffalo biscuits, and other favorite treats.

Summary (7):: 8/4: Beauty is curled up in her blanket on approach. She is easily leashed and walks out of the room. She pulls into the yard. She has wide eyes and leans back as the handler reaches to secure a drag leash. Once the slip lead is removed, she runs off with a bouncy body. She jumps up on the bench and briefly freezes with her ears back when approached by a less familiar staff member. The handler makes a smooch sound, and she approaches, curling up against her, appreciating pets. The handler sits on the bench with her, and she begins to lick her face repeatedly. Some treats are tossed and she jumps off the bench, sniffs them but does not eat. A tennis ball is taken out of the toy bin and tossed across the yard. Beauty engages in play, retrieving the ball and dropping it into handler's hand. They engage for some time, then Beauty relieves herself. When she is returned to the kennel, she begins to eat her breakfast still left from this morning. 8/4: Beauty is at the front of her kennel, easily leashed and taken on a walk around the building. Beauty pulled on leash mildly and explored her surroundings. Staff then took her to the yard, and Beauty tolerated pets and accepted treats. Staff then took her back to her kennel with no issue. 7/27: Beauty is standing at the front of her crate when approached. She is easily leashed and walks out of her crate without any coaxing. Beauty ignores other dogs as she leaves the room. Beauty is taken on a walk. During the walk, Beauty pulls a mild amount, with a soft body, and ignores people passed. Beauty is easily returned to her crate. 7/26: Beauty is lying down in her crate when approached. She stayed lying down with a tense body as staff leashed her. Beauty slowly leaves her crate and is taken for a walk. During the walk, Beauty has a fearful body, low head, ears back tail down. Beauty pulls a mild amount and is responsive to staff. As the walk continues, she develops a more neutral body. Beauty allows for her leash to be clipped and is easily returned to the kennel.

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Beauty finds toys and stolen items of a high value. She is reported to snap or bite. We recommend Beauty be left alone when playing. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Beauty’s mouth. Should you have to remove something from her, we recommend always trading for something of an equal or higher value. She should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manner/Impulse Control: Beauty lacks basic manners and impulse control. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him/her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see the handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Fearful: Beauty is showing signs of fear in the care center. Some fear is expected in this stressful environment. She does well with a slow, considerate approach. Please see the handout on Fearful. Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression/Bite history (human): Beauty has separation anxiety and escalated to biting the owner when they were putting their jacket on to leave the house. Beauty resource guards her toys and other stolen items. She has escalated to biting when the owners attempt to remove something she shouldn't have. None of these bites have broken the skin. This is a learned behavior which is likely to repeat itself without careful management. Positive reinforcement training should focus on desensitizing the dog to triggers and teaching alternative behaviors; punishment should always be avoided. Please see the handout on Multiple Bite History and Risk of Future Aggression. Separation Anxiety: Beauty is reported to experience separation anxiety in a home environment. She has escalated to biting the owner when they were trying to leave the house. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. She would do best in a home where a person is home for a large part of the day or with a plan, so she is not alone for long periods of time. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety.
