Yuro
Hello, my name is Yuro. My animal id is #249827. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/16/2026.
Yuro is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Yuro can be loose and wiggly with handlers and staff, readily accepting treats and toys. On his initial handling assessment and his reassessment, Yuro has displayed a concerning level of resource guarding - completely bypassing the toy and immediately grabbing onto the prop hand, remaining fixated. When removing him from the kennel, Yuro begins leash biting and has recently begun to fight with neighboring dogs in the kennel. Medically, Yuro is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. A volunteer writes: We had no idea Yuro was a Barkour expert when we first took him out, but we discovered it in no time! He was quick to show us his moves, leaping onto the bench, bouncing off of our bodies and for the grand finale, he zooms repeatedly through our legs. Of course, when we go to capture his best trick he gets camera shy but after many tries, we finally get him whooshing through for a treat or two. After all this play, he's very happy and needs some help settling down with a little bit of peanut butter. Yuro is a low rider and just about the cutest guy with the most handsome smile and we can't believe he hasn't caught the eye of a special family yet. Yuro has been to the shelter twice, once when surrendered due to housing issues and most recently, tied to a pole. He was described by his family as social, affectionate, playful and active. He has never been crated and knows the cue sit. He likes to play/snack on bones, and his favorite treat are chicken feet. His previous family's favorite thing about him is that he will use pillows or cushions to prop his head up when he sleeps. Due to some potential for resource guarding during his assessment, as long as some mouthiness/poor inhibition, Yuro is available to an experienced level 4 adult home. At this time, there is no information on how he is with other dogs.

Summary (6):: 05/05: As the handler gets closer, Yuro is at the front of his kennel, leaping up at the door with dilated eyes and a tense face. He is put through a lead test to check if he will bite his leash, but he doesn't. When he emerges from the kennel, he eats the biscuits that are on his path and He is easy to walk along the handler and will occasionally glance up to sniff the leash. Throughout the walk, he will walk in this manner, periodically sniffing the handler's leg while maintaining a high tail and a slightly stiff body. He will check the handler for treats and be securely fastened upon his return from the kennel 4/26/26: Yuro is reported to be " excessively " fighting in the kennel with the dog in the neighboring kennel. 04/20/26: (Reassessment) Yuro stands at the front of his kennel on his hind legs. During leashing, he bites and releases the leash multiple times before it is successfully placed. In the assessment room, he displays a neutral to loose body, allows all handling, and leans into the handler, occasionally melting to the ground. He runs without increased arousal. Upon knock, he becomes loose and wiggly and approaches the handler. He ignores the toy and repeatedly targets the dummy hand with biting. For more information see behavior assessment.
Summary (7):: 4/20/26: Yuro is at the front of his kennel jumping up at the door with a flushed face and dilated pupils as the handler approaches. He is leashed with a treat but will spit it out as he comes out the the kennel. He will pull hard out and will walk right next to the handler and occasionally look up at the leash to sniff it. He is tossed treats about every 10 seconds. He will walk like this for the duration of the walk, occasionally sniffing the handler's leg with a slightly tense frame and high tail. When returning from the kennel he will look at a person who is working on the door and will tense slightly and the handler will feel vibrations from his throat before hearing a low growl. He is refocused with treats and will then walk back into the Care Center. He is secured safely. 4/6/26: Yuro is barking and jumping at his kennel door as handler approaches. He continues to jump and bark at the door as the handler unlocks it. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats and he then pulls hard on the way to the behavior room. In the room, he has a loose body as he explores around with sniffing. He would jump up on the handler to demand for treats and is able to sit to receive them. He engages in a few toys and then goes to engaging in a snuffle mat and lick mat. He would jump up on the handlers that would enter the room with a loose body and is able to sit for treats. He pulls on the way back to his kennel and enters with no issues. 03/19/26( Assessment Note): Yuro is sitting in the back of his kennel and calmly walks to the front, allowing handler to leash him with ease. He is escorted to the assessment room where he allows handler to place a drag leash and collar on him. He allows all handling while maintaining a soft frame and runs without becoming aroused. He becomes alert but does not react to knock. He grips the toy, releases it, and then redirects toward the dummy hand multiple times. Yuro is returned to his kennel safely without any issues. For additional details, see behavioral assessment.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Yuro's response to the toy item of his handling assessment, indicating possible potential to guard high-value items, we feel Yuro may be most comfortable in a home without children.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Leash-biting,Kennel presence,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Yuro's previous owner reported that he had accidents in the home and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Please see the handout on House soiling. Resource guarding: Potential resource guarding was noted during his handling assessment as Yuro was observed to fixate on the fake hand, grabbing and pulling and whipping his head. For this reason, we advise against ever removing items from Yuro's possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. Please see handout on Resource guarding. Destructive behavior: Yuro's previous owner reported that he had destructive tendencies, but details as to how this manifested or if any steps were taken to modify this behavior were not provided. Please see handout on Destructive behavior. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Yuro was reported to jump up often by his previous owner. Similar behaviors were displayed during his handling assessment. Please see handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Leash-biting | Low threshold for arousal: When removing Yuro from his kennel for his reassessment, he begins jumping up and grabbing at the handler's lead. Please see handout on Arousal. Kennel presence: When approached in the kennel, Yuro begins jumping up, barking hard, and growling. It is unknown if these behaviors will translate into another stressful environment.
