Summary:: Yuro arrived at the care centers as a stray, so his behavior with other dogs is unknown. 5/8/26: Yuro greets a novel female dog off leash through a barrier. Yuro when the female approaches with a loose body sniffing through the gate, will tense with a high tail, forward body and tight face. Yuro remains at the gate and begins to grumble and has to be pulled away and does not disengage on his own. Afterwards he is removed and still pulling towards the female when walking away.

Summary (3):: 7/8/26: It is reported that Yuro needs a kennel cover and that he is "starting fights". 7/8/26: Yuro is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body; he is barking in the direction of the neighboring dogs. The handler sprays cheese on the kennel door, and as Yuro eats it, the handler leashes hem. While exiting, Yuro pulls to the kennels behind and ahead of them; the handler shortens the leash and pulls him out the room. On the street, Yuro walks ahead moderately; when seeing a person, he pulls towards them with a loose body. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Yuro to his kennel.

Summary (4):: 7/6/26: Yuro is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body. He is jumping up and down barking repeatedly. He is pressing his muzzle into the corner of the kennel and barks repeatedly. Yuro is easily leashed with spray cheese and taken out of the kennel. He immediately pulls towards the passing kennels with a tense face and body, heavily panting. He is taken downstairs in the elevator. Yuro is offered treats but he does not take them. Yuro pulls hard towards the street where he begins to gag from the leash tension. Yuro pulls moderately on the street. He relieves himself and is walked back to the shelter. Yuro begins to pull hard back upstairs. He pulls into the kennel room, continuing to gag from the leash tension again before he quickly pulls himself towards a passing dog kennel and snaps towards them. He is kept away and is returned to his kennel without issue.

Summary (5):: 7/5/26: Yuro is at the front of the kennel jumping up and down. He is easily leashed with spray cheese as a lure. Yuro is taken out of the kennel and begins to pull hard. He ducks behind the handler and begins to kennel fight intensely with the neighboring dogs. Yuro is muscled away from the kennel and is take out of the room. He is taken to the street where he pulls moderately. When observing a dog over 30 feet away, Yuro stares towards the dog with a tense body. He is unable to be redirected with treats or squeakers. When treats are offerd, Yuro sniffs them but does not take them. Handler has to apply leash tension to direct Yuro out of the dogs line of sight. Yuro then walks slowly down the block. He relieves himself and then walks back towards the shelter. Yuro begins to pull hard back inside and tries to pull towards the neighboring kennels. He is returned to kennel without issue. 7/4/26: Staff reported that Yuro almost caught their finger from leash biting in kennel. He is given a "leash me with cheese" sign. 7/1/26: Yuro is reported to kennel fight; he is especially reactive to the dog next to him. 6/28/26: It is reported via the whiteboard that Yuro is not taking treats when leash biting but will accept chesse when leashing 6/20/26: Yuro is at the front of his kennel with a soft body, barking at the handler. As the handler attempts to leash him, Yuro backs away; with one more attempt he allows the leshing. When attempting to take him out, Yuro attempts to jump out the kennel; the handler carries him and places him outside the room. On the street, Yuro walks ahead with moderate to hard pulling. When seeing passersby, Yuro sniffs them with as they walk by with a tucked tail. While walking back to the shelter, Yuro walks besides the handler with no leash tension, but then pulls hard in the opposite direction. This is repeated while walking into the building. The handler brings Yuro inside for his assessment (see notes). Afterwards, the handler carries and returns Yuro to his kennel.

Summary (6):: 05/14/26: Yuro is standing on his hind legs at the front of his kennel and attempts to mildly grab the leash as the handler places it over his head. He is then escorted to the assessment room for an enrichment session. Inside the room, Yuro is offered multiple enrichment activities including two snuffle mats one containing treats and another containing scents and catnip as well as a lick mat with cheese. Yuro independently explores the room and alternates between all three activities, engaging with each enrichment item throughout the session. At times, Yuro becomes distracted by loud noises outside the room and will pause his activities to approach the handler while seeking comfort, holding one paw up and looking toward the handler. Handler redirects his focus by introducing an additional puzzle feeder with high-value treats, which Yuro then engages with appropriately. When the session is complete, Yuro is brought back to his kennel safely without any issues. 5/8/26: Yuro is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins to hard bark and jump at the door as the handler unlocked it. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats and he is then taken to the play yard for play group. In the yard, he has a tense body as he greets the other dog at the gate and then disengages. He is comfortable approaching the handler to receive a few pets. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. He pulls on the way back to his kennel and is able to enter with no issues. 05/05/26: As the handler gets closer, Yuro is at the front of his kennel, leaping up at the door with dilated eyes and a tense face. He is put through a lead test to check if he will bite his leash, but he doesn't. When he emerges from the kennel, he eats the biscuits that are on his path and He is easy to walk along the handler and will occasionally glance up to sniff the leash. Throughout the walk, he will walk in this manner, periodically sniffing the handler's leg while maintaining a high tail and a slightly stiff body. He will check the handler for treats and be securely fastened upon his return from the kennel 4/26/26: Yuro is reported to be " excessively " fighting in the kennel with the dog in the neighboring kennel. 04/20/26: (Reassessment) Yuro stands at the front of his kennel on his hind legs. During leashing, he bites and releases the leash multiple times before it is successfully placed. In the assessment room, he displays a neutral to loose body, allows all handling, and leans into the handler, occasionally melting to the ground. He runs without increased arousal. Upon knock, he becomes loose and wiggly and approaches the handler. He ignores the toy and repeatedly targets the dummy hand with biting. For more information see behavior assessment.

Summary (7):: 4/20/26: Yuro is at the front of his kennel jumping up at the door with a flushed face and dilated pupils as the handler approaches. He is leashed with a treat but will spit it out as he comes out the the kennel. He will pull hard out and will walk right next to the handler and occasionally look up at the leash to sniff it. He is tossed treats about every 10 seconds. He will walk like this for the duration of the walk, occasionally sniffing the handler's leg with a slightly tense frame and high tail. When returning from the kennel he will look at a person who is working on the door and will tense slightly and the handler will feel vibrations from his throat before hearing a low growl. He is refocused with treats and will then walk back into the Care Center. He is secured safely. 4/6/26: Yuro is barking and jumping at his kennel door as handler approaches. He continues to jump and bark at the door as the handler unlocks it. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats and he then pulls hard on the way to the behavior room. In the room, he has a loose body as he explores around with sniffing. He would jump up on the handler to demand for treats and is able to sit to receive them. He engages in a few toys and then goes to engaging in a snuffle mat and lick mat. He would jump up on the handlers that would enter the room with a loose body and is able to sit for treats. He pulls on the way back to his kennel and enters with no issues. 03/19/26( Assessment Note): Yuro is sitting in the back of his kennel and calmly walks to the front, allowing handler to leash him with ease. He is escorted to the assessment room where he allows handler to place a drag leash and collar on him. He allows all handling while maintaining a soft frame and runs without becoming aroused. He becomes alert but does not react to knock. He grips the toy, releases it, and then redirects toward the dummy hand multiple times. Yuro is returned to his kennel safely without any issues. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Yuro so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Yuro's response to the toy item of his handling assessment, indicating possible potential to guard high-value items, we feel Yuro may be most comfortable in a home without children. Recommend no dog parks: Due to Yuro's behavior during playgroup, we recommend Yuro does not visit dog parks. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Kennel presence,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Yuro's previous owner reported that he had accidents in the home and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Please see the handout on House soiling. Resource guarding: Potential resource guarding was noted during his handling assessment as Yuro was observed to fixate on the fake hand, grabbing and pulling and whipping his head. For this reason, we advise against ever removing items from Yuro's possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. Please see handout on Resource guarding. Destructive behavior: Yuro's previous owner reported that he had destructive tendencies, but details as to how this manifested or if any steps were taken to modify this behavior were not provided. Please see handout on Destructive behavior. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Yuro was reported to jump up often by his previous owner. Similar behaviors were displayed during his handling assessment. Please see handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. On Leash Reactivity: It is reported that Yuro is cage fighting intensely with the neighboring kennels. This behavior is not able to be redirected. Yuro will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash-biting | Low threshold for arousal: When removing Yuro from his kennel for his reassessment, he begins jumping up and grabbing at the handler's lead. Please see handout on Arousal. Kennel presence: When approached in the kennel, Yuro begins jumping up, barking hard, and growling. It is unknown if these behaviors will translate into another stressful environment.
