Animal Profile

Kairo

Hello, my name is Kairo. My animal id is #217531. I am a male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/16/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow (nycha).

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Kairo is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Kairo arrived at the Care Center as an owner surrender due to housing concerns. Kairo's previous owner describes him as friendly and social with familiar people. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable, Kairo has remained highly fearful. During his handling assessment Kairo was noted to have a tense body and tucked tail. In play-yard Kairo at times walks with a low body, aloof with staff, but does tolerate contact. When returning to kennel, Kairo is often hesitant and baulks although he is receptive to high value treats. Medically, Kairo has started treatment for suspected pneumonia.

Kairo tolerates light petting on his back. After sometime outside, he is slowly walked back into the building. At the entrance to the kennel room he hesitates and pulls to an opposite direction. He walks slowly on his own with gentle tension. He sniffs a nearby kennel and retreats. Another handler comes to assist with a sling. He is slinged under the hips and plants as he is returned to kennel. Kairo begins head whipping and thrashing where he gets out of the sling. Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. No Dog Parks: Due to hard barking and growling towards unfamiliar dogs we recommend no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Kairo's previous owner states that he may hard bark at strangers. Kairo has been obsvered to baulk and thrash when retuning to kennel. When a sling is used Kairo was obsvered to be head whip persistently and thrash intensely. It is important to move slowly with Kairo, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
