I need a home where there are no other dogs. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals.

Summary (6):: 12/15/25: It is reported on the behavior board that Koda is very dog reactive and attempts to kennel fight on the way in and out of kennel. 12/14/25: (MID DAY WALK): Koda is at the front of the kennel with a loose body and wagging tail and panting. His kennel painted in dried feces. Koda is easily leashed and pulls extremely hard out of the room and down the hall. Handler brings them outside and attempts to leash harness Koda. He turns his head to the handler and jumps up on them. Koda is then redirected with treats and handler successfully leash harnesses him. He lip licks while this is done. Koda then pulls moderately on the leash harness and relieves himself a few times. He stares at a dog and pulls towards the dog. He is easily called away when his name is called. Koda is walked back inside and is returned to kennel. As the leash is removed, he bites the leash lightly. Koda then picks up his linen in his mouth and stares to the handler as the interaction is ended. 12/14/25: Staff reported that during their morning walk, Koda began mounting them. They had to straight arm him off. 12/8/25: Koda is reported to be leash biting on return to kennel. 12/6/25: Koda is at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly body as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and brought him out the room. He jumps on the handler when riding the elevator. WHen he exits, Koda attempts to pull towards staff with a loose body. On the street, Koda moderately pulls on leash. When seeing dogs, Koda will pull very hard towards them, but the handler pulls him away. When the handler shows Koda a treat and gives him a sit command, he jumps on the handler with his front paws. This is repeated a few times. Upon entering, Koda jumps on a staff member while waiting for the elevator. Koda pulls towards one dog exiting the elevator, and then another dog that entered it. Both times, the handler pulls him away. The leash is clipped and Koda is returned to kennel.
Summary (7):: 11/28/25: Koda is at the front of his kennel with a loose and wiggly body as handler approaches. He is then easily leashed and removed from kennel, where he would have a very hard pull out of the room. Koda is then taken to the yard, where he would remain highly exuberant with the handler and would continue to pull towards spots he wanted to sniff and mark. He would continue this throughout the walk, even as he is in a pen in the yard. Handler places him on a drag leash and he would continue to sniff around to relieve himself. Shortly after, he is brought back inside where he would continue to pull hard and would scramble around the handler as they try to bring him back to kennel. Koda is then muscled into his kennel, the interaction was then ended. 11/25/25 Koda is at the front of his kennel and is easily leash, pulling with strength but not frantically when leaving the kennel room with no reaction to passing dogs in other kennels or in the hallway. Upon entering the yard, he sniffs and jumps socially towards staff before posing for photos. Able to be redirected when needed using a squeaker and treats. No issue returning to the building and to his kennel. 11/21/25: Koda is at font of kennel, loose body, mildly panting. He is easily leashed and pulls very hard out of kennel room to sidewalk. Koda is loose bodied but pulling hard for majority of walk, he frequently stops to sniff areas of interest, and several times tries to drink from puddles of water. Koda sits for treats, takes gently from handler. Koda allows petting of torso area with loose body. Koda is walked back to MACC, however baulks when re-entering kennel room. He is run back to kennel. He stops to drink water from his bowl in front of kennel, moderate leash pressure is used to muscle him into kennel where he resumes drinking water after entering. 11/21/25: Koda is at the front of his kennel with a very loose and wiggly body. He is easily leashed and removed from kennel, where he would pull very hard out of the room. Koda is then taken for a street walk, where he would sniff around and relieve himself in multiple spots. He would continue to pull very hard around on the street, darting on the leash. Shortly after, he is then brought back into the assessment office where he would remain loose and wiggly with the handlers soliciting pets and accepting treats with a soft mouth. Koda is then easily collared. After the assessment, he is then re-leashed and handler is able to jog him back to his kennel where he would readily run in. 11/21/25: Koda is observed to baulk and refuse to walk towards his kennel. Handler then jogs with him back to his kennel, and he would stop in front. He is then muscled into his kennel.

Summary:: Loose, jumping on handler, treat motivated, showed no interest in dogs, entered kennel without issue
ENERGY LEVEL:: Koda is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Koda.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No Children: Due to Koda's fearful nature paired with his overall exuberance, we recommend a home with no children. Single-Pet Home/Recommended No Dog Parks: Due to reports of Koda's reactivity toward dogs and small animals, we recommend a single pet home and that Koda not visit any dog parks. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Koda's former owners report he will hover over food with a tense body and will growl/snap if disturbed. During an assessment Koda became tense and retreated while in the possession of a toy. We recommend that Koda be left alone while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Koda's mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Destructive Behavior: Koda's former owners report he displays destructive tendencies in the home such as chewing on walls, furniture, and household items. Koda will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control: During his assessment Koda was observed to jump frequently on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Controls. Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression: Koda's former owners report he will growl and bark when held/restrained and while disturbed when sleeping. It is important to move slowly with Koda, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Koda to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On-Leash Reactivity/Barrier Frustration: Koda's former owners report he will react to dogs, cats and small animals on leash by hard barking and lunging toward them. Koda may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Arousal: Koda was obsvered to mount handlers while on leash and during his assessment. He is also obsvered to leash bite when returned to kennel. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Koda to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors. Please see handout on Arousal.
