Animal Profile

Kiki

Hello, my name is Kiki. My animal id is #233645. I am a male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 8/5/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - out of country.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Kiki is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He is has never been socialized in the home and has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels and high reactivity, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into an appropriate environment in which he can be consistently met with and socialized appropriately. He would do best at a facility/space that is willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping severely under socialized cats adjust to the world and home life.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Previous owner "has had cat since it was a kitten but the cat has never really socialized with the owner. Owner states cat avoids people. She only really sees him at night... He will disappear when people come over and avoids people... only eats at night" Whether Kiki as a kitten never socialized with the owner or attempts were never made to socialize Kiki- he is now a 6-year-old cat that does not allow any handling, only comes out at night to eat or move around, and is avoidant of people and strangers. Kiki is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. He is very apprehensive of people; when interactions are attempted, he will hiss and growl from inside the den before he swats at the scratcher tool multiple times and lunges to bite the tool multiple times. It is difficult to predict if he will respond to socialization and we are unsure if he will thrive in a human home environment. We recommend all attempts to socialize this cat before placing him into a human home, however please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people "Spirit cats" in a shelter context refer to cats who are very shy with people, preferring to live in a quiet environment and interacting with other cats rather than humans. They are often a good choice for patient, kind individuals who can create a safe and comfortable space for them to thrive. We cannot be certain whether or not Kiki will warm up to socialization in shelter or in a home environment and clients should be counseled on the potential of Kiki being a Spirit Cat.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Kiki would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: On approach, Kiki is in his den and hidden from view - he cannot be coaxed out with treats or when spoken to softly. When the den cover is removed, he is laying with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, ears tilted as he begins to hiss and growl. When the assessor slowly offers the scratcher tool into the den, he continues to hiss with a low body before swatting the tool multiple times and lunging and biting it multiple times as well. Pick up is not attempted and the interaction is ended to prevent further escalation and FAS. he continues to low growl from inside the den after the cover is replaced and the cage door is closed. Kiki is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. He may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed.
