Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is limited prior dog-to-dog history recorded. Vanilla Froyo came into care with a female intact medium mixed breed dog. 9/12/26: Vanilla Froyo is introduced to a novel intact male and approaches the fence with a loose body and high wags, sniffing the other dog from a distance with a soft face. The other dog is engaging with his handler, and Vanilla disengages and does the same. He walks by the fence, not acknowledging the other dog and stands a few feet away remaining aloof. He then sees the other dog at the fence, flags over with a forward leaning tense body, sticks his snout through the fence and begins low growling and puffing his lips while fixating on the other dog. The other dog muzzles punches the fence in response and Vanilla flinches back and hard stares at the dog. He is vocally redirected without issue. 9/9/26: Vanilla Froyo is introduced to a novel intact female and is initially tense at the fence with a high flagged tail and outstretched neck/head. While sniffing nose to nose he begins giving soft high wags. He disengages and sniffs in the catch pen, then reapproaches with a looser body and high wags. The other dog displays signs of discomfort through the fence and Vanilla Froyo remains relaxed with a soft face and body.

Summary (5):: 9/17/26: Vanilla Froyo is reported to be fearful when being brought into the elevator; he would pancake and whine for both AM and midday walks, respectively. A 'use stairs' sign is given, as he does well using the stairwell.

Summary (6):: 9/15/26 (PM): Vanilla Froyo is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. While waiting for the elevator, Vanilla pulls around. When crossing the street, he turns around and jumps on the handler; he also whines while standing to the side to wait for people to walk past. Vanilla walks with mild leash tension and no reactivity. Upon entry, Vanilla looks at the kennels while walking near them, but climbs into his own. 9/15/26: Vanilla Froyo is observed to stick their whole jaw through the bars and begin to bite them. Causing the bars of their kennel door to break. They have also been observed to be panting heavily while in kennel. Additionally, Vanilla is observed to thrash as soon as he is brought out of the room. 9/12/26: Vanilla Froyo is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. While walking to the yard, Vanilla thrashes; he recovers and walks out. After the interaction (see d2d notes), Vanilla is returned to his kennel. 9/10/26: Vanilla Froyo is at the front of his kennel when handler approaches. He is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel. Vanilla Froyo walks slowly alongside the handler in the hallways with no interest in pop-up crates or staff members. Once outside, he immediately relives himself on the street. Vanilla continues walking next to the handler with no leash tension. He is not seeking any interaction with handler and remains aloof. Vanilla has no reaction to other dogs or people passerby. His body is slightly lowered. Once walk is done, Vanilla Froyo is taken to the Canine Behavior office for the assessment (see notes). During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Vanilla Froyo back into his kennel with no issue. 9/09/26 [D2D]: Vanilla Froyo is at the front of his kennel with lowered body when handler approaches. He is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel. Vanilla Froyo walks slowly behind the handler in the hallways with no reaction to other dogs or staff members. Vanilla Froyo is taken to the yard for the playgroup (see notes). During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Vanilla Froyo back into his kennel with no issue. 9/7/26: As handler approaches the kennel Vanilla Froyo is lying down and slowly gets up as handler begins to unlock the kennel. He is then easily leashed and removed from his kennel for a street walk. Once handler reaches the street, Vanilla walks on a loose leash ahead of the handler with his ears pinned and a low body. As the walk progresses, he would become neutral bodied and would begin to relieve himself after sniffing multiple spots. He would begin to pull hard towards the street and trees he wanted to explore, but would follow the handler once mild leash pressure is applied. He solicits brief petting and is then easily clipped and returned back to his kennel with ease.

Summary (7):: 9/6/26: Vanilla Froyo was lying down in his kennel and stood up as handler opened kennel door. He was easily leashed and taken for a walk. While go across the street Vanilla stops and rolls over onto his back and starts wiggling around. He ignores treats offered by handler. After handler offers some encouragement, Vanilla gets up takes a few steps and does the same thing. He wiggles around on his back for a little, handler keeps trying to encourage him to get up. At this point two members of the public start calling after him to encourage him to continue. He gets up but then does the same thing. Handler attempts to try to pick him up but he head whips toward handler. After a little more encouragement he gets up again and continues on his walk. He is returned to kennel with no further incident. 9/5/26: Vanilla Froyo is lying down at the front of kennel. When handler opens door he sits up and is easily leashed and taken for a street walk. He starts off his walk walking next to handler with a slack leash but soon starts to pull moderately in varying directions in a zig zag like pattern. As he was walking on the street a person running passed and he pulled toward them. Another time a person was riding a bike in the street and Vanilla Froyo lunged and pulled in their direction when they got close. During the walk Vanilla has a lowered body and was tense. Handler tried to engage in pattern games but Vanilla was too distracted by the environment to pay attention. Should try high value treats like cheese or chicken next time. He was returned to kennel with no further issue. 9/4/26: Vanilla Froyo is lying down in the front of is kennel when the handler approaches; once he stands up, he is leashed and brought out the room. Vanilla walks with mild leash tension, often fixating on marked areas and sniffing them. He doesn't react to dogs. With the first few passersby he sees, Vanilla stares at them with a lowered, tense body; as they wait for other passersby to walk past, Vanilla stands with a trembling body. He then begins to pull moderately in different directions as the walk progresses. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Vanilla to his kennel. 9/2/26: (Intake Behavior) Staff requested assistance with bringing Vanilla Froyo to kennel. He was reported to be hard barking and lunging towards passing people and dogs. Handler's escorted the finder with both dogs towards the driveway. The dogs were separated and the finder was able to place both slip leads over Vanilla. He is double leashed into the building. His body lowers as he walks down the hall. He begins to defecate as he is brought to his kennel. He backs away from the kennel and is muscled in. The leashes were retrieved with a hook.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Vanilla Froyo so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior, we recommend an adult only home. Recommend No Dog Parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Vanilla Froyo has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), indicating possible dog selectivity, we feel that he should not visit dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Vanilla Froyo associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: During intake Vanilla Froyo was observed to hard stare and growl at handler. During his assessment Vanilla was observed to be tense with pinned ears and began seeking exit when the handler attempted to interact with him. It is important to move slowly with Vanilla, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity/Barrier Frustration: While on leash, Vanilla was observed to lunge at a bike that was going past. Vanilla has been noted to bite and pull on the kennel bars of their kennel. Vanilla will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior.
