Jade is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Jade has displayed escalating arousal concerns that have not improved despite efforts to help him acclimate to the shelter environment. He consistently displays high arousal, initially presenting as leash biting and mouthiness, which has progressed to repeated leash biting during handling, in the play yard, and when returning to his kennel. During a recent playgroup session, Jade became frustrated after greeting another dog and redirected onto the handler by grabbing their shoes and pant cuffs with moderate pressure and repeatedly jumping toward their stomach and chest with an open mouth; prompting them to push their treat pouch into his mouth for him to grab and not their limbs/body. Medically, Jade is underweight and has dental disease.

During a recent playgroup session, Jade became frustrated after greeting another dog and redirected onto the handler by grabbing their shoes and pant cuffs with moderate pressure and repeatedly jumping toward their stomach and chest with an open mouth; prompting them to push their treat pouch into his mouth for him to grab and not their limbs/body. Medically, Jade is underweight and has dental disease. Jade was surrendered into care due to his owner/caretaker moving into a new home and not being able to afford to continue care for Jade. They stated that they had Jade in the home for close to a month after intially finding him as a stray. His previous family described him as a social, affectionate, vocal, very active dog. He would spend most of his time where his people were or in the living room. They did note that he had accidents a few times a week if not taken outside and was fearful of having his paws touched. During his stay in care, Jade has not acclimated well. He has displayed mouthiness, high levels of anxiety, and a concerningly low threshold for arousal, which has manifested as leash biting and recently escalated towards the handler once over his threshold. Due to these concerns, we recommend that Jade be placed in an adult home through a New Hope partner that can provide consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Jade presents with outside of the care centers. What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Upon intake Jade was highly friendly, outgoing and docile with counselors. He allowed all handling such as scanning for microchip, collaring and walking back to medical. he was then vaccinated and placed into his kennel. All done without any concerns.

Basic Information:: Jade is a male tan/white medium mixed breed dog. He was found as stray by his previous owner and kept for a month before being surrendered to ACC.

Previously lived with:: 2 adults and 2 children

How is this dog around strangers?: Jade is tolerant around strangers as well as visitors.

How is this dog around children?: Jade is friendly, outgoing and playful around children.

How is this dog around other dogs?: Jade is playful around familiar dogs as well as unfamiliar dogs on a leash. jade has never interacted with another dog off of a leash.

How is this dog around cats?: Jade has no experience with cats or any other animals.

Resource guarding:: It is unknown if Jade resource guards as it has never been attempted to take an item, he would deem valuable away.

Bite history:: Jade has no bite history.

Housetrained:: Partially

Energy level/descriptors:: High (often playful/busy)

Other Notes:: Jade will use the bathroom outside on walks (grass, cement, dirt, etc.). A few times a week he will have accidents if not taken outside. Hade is not bothered when held/restrained, disturbed while resting/sleeping, startled, pushed/pulled off of furniture and when his collar is grabbed/touched. He is fearful when his paws are touched.

He will allow his owner/family to bathe and brush him. He is a level 3 when out for a walk meaning - mild to moderate pulling (on or off during walk). He knows the following command "sit". His previous owner stated they love when Jade prances. He loves peanut butter.

Summary:: Jade arrived as an owner surrender but have little knowledge on her behavior with other dogs. 8/5/26: Jade is introduced to a novel intact female and approaches the fence with a loose wiggly body and mid level wags. He toe taps, play bows, and begins demand barking while following the other dog through the fence. He begins to get over aroused and directs frustration towards his handler, jumping up and mouthing at them repeatedly to the point that an air horn was required to redirect him. 7/30/26: Jade greets a novel male dog, Apple Jax, off leash through a barrier. Jade initially approaches the gate displaying loose, wiggly body language while attempting to greet the novel male. As the interaction continues, the novel male becomes tense before hard barking, lunging, and snarling toward Jade. Jade reacts to the novel male's escalation by hard barking and lunging through the barrier. Both dogs are immediately separated to prevent further escalation.

Summary (7):: 8/5/26 (playgroup): Jade is at the back of his kennel sleeping as the handler approaches. He is leashed with treats and will jump up for the leash in kennel, the handler is able to redirect him with treats but before he is finished with the treats he will jump up again this time towards the handler's chest. The handler will then return him to kennel ad toss a treat scatter which he will engage with and will loosen significantly. The handler then takes him to the yard, tossing treats ahead of him to keep his focus away from the handler. In the yard, his collar is clipped with a drag leash and he will greet the other dog through the gate (see dog-dog for more information) but becomes frustrated and starts to jump onto the handler. When they take a step back, Jade will begin to case their feet, grabbing at their shoes and the cuffs of their pants with moderate pressure. He will then begin to jump up onto the handler at stomach height with an open mouth, grabbing at their pouch. He jumps higher up towards their chest and the handler will then feed the bite with their pouch which he will grab briefly before falling to the ground. The handler will then grab his collar and then his leash and is then able to stiff arm and hold him away from their body. He is then returned to kennel and secured safely. 08/1/26: Jade was taken out of his kennel by a volunteer, where he was noted to show leash pressure sensitivity. He is noted to leash-bite when taken out in the play yard. When going back to kennel, he is noted to leash-bite. 07/29/26(BA note): Jade is lying down in his kennel and will approach the front as the handler arrives. He will then be brought to the assessment room, where he will allow the handler to place a drag leash on him. Jade will allow all handling and will complete the run portion before beginning to leash bite. He does not respond to the knock test and will sniff the toy before disengaging and walking away. Once this session is concluded, Jade will be brought back to his kennel safely without any issues. For more information, see Behavioral Assessment.

Place with a New Hope partner: Jade has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Jade is reported to have accidents a few times a week if not taken outside. Please see handout on house soiling. Leash-biting/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition/Low threshold for arousal: Jade is noted to seek attention from handlers and will begin to mouth handlers' hands and bite at his leash, becoming hyperaroused. He has recently escalated to biting at a handler's pants, trying to grab their ankles, and tracking their feet, prompting the handler to push their treat pouch into his mouth to grab due to him aiming for their stomach. Training should focus on reinforcing calm attention-seeking behaviors, teaching appropriate outlets for excitement, and rewarding disengagement when arousal begins to escalate. Please see the handout on Arousal and Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Handling/touch sensitivity: Jade's caretaker reported that he is fearful when his paws are touched. Jade is noted to leash bite with leash pressure. Building positive associations with leash and reinforcing calm responses during handling. We recommend a harness to relieve leash pressure. Please see the handout Handling/touch sensitivity. Anxiety: Jade is noted to display heavy panting. Providing predictable routines, appropriate enrichment, and opportunities for decompression may help support his emotional regulation. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety.
