Animal Profile

Luna E.B.

Hello, my name is Luna E.B.. My animal id is #231270. I am a desexed female tri color cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 7/5/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.

Luna E.B. is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. She is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for her mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

What my friends at ACC say about me: Luna E.B. tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. A volunteer writes: Luna EB introduces herself to everyone the best way she knows how. By poking her paws out her condo and trying to tap the arms, legs, or hair or anyone walking by. She wants to say hello because she's been feeling a little lost as of late. The busy shelter isn't quite her style because Luna's a cat who likes to be right in the middle and running the show while she's here. She loves playtime but will often try to convince us that she was given special permission to organize the Care Center's toys and treats (she wasn't). Luna EB's probably felt a little limited by her condo, hence her always reaching paws, but she's just trying to make things work. Luna EB came to us from a home with other cats and immediately slid herself into my arms when I opened her condo door. We've heard she can be a little shy around new people but usually warms up on her own time. We're hoping that you'll come in and give Luna EB a chance soon.

The behavioral issues reported are how she hides in fear and scratches at furniture. When nails are being trimmed and when being put in a carrier, she struggles/squirms. When brushed or held, she is unbothered. Upon intake, Luna was calm until I started unzipping the carrier. She began to hiss so I gave her some churros which calmed her down. Reattempting to open the carrier, she began to hiss and swat. The carrier was put against the den hoping she would walk in but she continued to stay in the carrier with a tense body. I then asked for help from admissions but the cat continued to swat and scream. We ended up having to dump her into the den where she continued to growl, swat, scream, and hiss. While being transferred she growled.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 7/11/25 Vol. 1.In litter box very nervous - started to swat as I was reading report - eyes wide and round, pupils dilated, jumping at movement and sound in the room. Open cage to put in toys - she lunged and swatted at toy - hissed and pulled back to litter box - tail twitching furiously and crouched as if ready to spring. Kept door open, kept sweet talking, put in squeeze treat bowl - Luna EB came forward to eat, pushing bowl to front of cage. When finished she went back to litter box to meatloaf and close eyes. Refilled bowl - she ignored. Stood by cage and sweet talked - she opened and closed her eyed. Ended interaction. Walked away and came back - she had eaten the treats and was sitting in front of cage looking out. As I came forward she ran to litter box - stretched out and batted ball toy. Dropped in hard treats - she ran up to eat. Ended interaction 2.Sitting erect in litter box - she had played with ball toy - it was in the hidey box and she was now sitting looking around, eyes still round, but ears forward. Tried laser toy - she watched and jumped on it when it landed next to her - then quickly resettled in litter box and ignored the toy. Turned off toy - still sitting tail flickering. Put in hard treats - she leaned over to eat then climbed up to top of hidey box and started to lie down and get comfortable - but something startled her and she jumped back down to crouch in litter box. Sweet talked and ended interaction. There was no hissing or growling. 7/13/25 Vol. Curled up in back of den, facing forward with head resting on her paws and dilated eyes. Opened her mouth as if to hiss as the tool approached, but the sound wasn't audible. Raised her head and tensed, but allowed cup to Temptations and squeeze-up to be dropped into den without swatting. Did not investigate further. Looked a bit UTW with her mouth slightly open. Hissed and struck from within the den while adding a den cover, then growled while cleaning. 7/24/25 FB26 She slowly engaged, soliciting attention with head bunts and body leans against the hand. She ate offered treats throughout, with her tail held high and pilo-erect. The interaction was ended to prevent overstimulation. 7/26/25 Vol. Luna E.B. is at the front of kennel. She kept sticking her paw out through the bars so I couldn't take the carabiner off. I tossed treats into the kennel.  Ignored. Soliciting attention  by rubbing her face against bars. I offered squeeze up on scratcher tool through bars. Ate squeeze up. Leaned and rubbed against scratcher tool. *Enrichment Notes continued in GAN*
