Keanu
Hello, my name is Keanu . My animal id is #225747. I am a male red brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 4/27/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormKeanu is currently at risk due to behavior reasons. Keanu has been anxious and fearful since arriving at the care center. He has been avoidant of the leash and will become tense bodied while seeking exit when a handling assessment is attempted. His previous care takers report that he will growl when meeting new people but once comfortable will be playful. He has previously lived with a small child and a cat, both of which he was friendly with. Medically, he is apparently healthy.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...
Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form. Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Keanu arrived at MACC as a stray with a limited history. His finder states that he will hard bark and growl towards strangers before warming up. During his stay in the care center Keanu has been observed to be receptive to treats. He has also been observed to shy away from handlers when they approach. Due to the detailed behaviors we recommend an experienced home with no children.

Summary:: *5/5/25* Keanu is brought into the assessment room again. He approaches the handler with a neutral body, however he quickly becomes tense with a tucked tail when the collar is presented. Handler offers spray cheese and treats, Keanu is receptive to both. When the handler approaches with the collar Keanu maintains his distance and hides behind the secondary handler. Keanu then stops being receptive to the spray cheese. Due to the high levels of fear and stress, Keanu is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time. *4/29/25*When brought into the assessment room Keanu approached the handler readily with a neutral body and was receptive to treats. Taking them with a soft mouth. When the handler presents the collar Keanu becomes tense and retreats away from the handler. He becomes hesitant when taking treats. Approaching with a low body and low head then retreating quickly after taking the treat. When the handler attempts to collar him Keanu hides behind the secondary handler and then begins seeking exit. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety displayed. Keanu is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time.
Summary:: 5/7/25: Keanu greets another dog at the gate with a neutral body and high wagging tail.
Summary (6):: 5/10/25: Keanu is siting in his kennel as handler approaches. He approaches the front as the handler unlocks the door and begins to lower his head down as the handler tries to leash him slowly. He would slowly back away each time the leash got closer to him. He was able to be leashed while being distracted with treats. He is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he would slowly walk behind and in front of the handler. He would stop and pull towards trees to smell and relieve himself. He had no reactions to dogs or people. He would stop walking ever few steps to catch his breathe from coughing due to being sick. He is able to return back to his kennel slowly with no issue. 5/6/25: It is reported on the behavior board that handler needed to use chicken to leash. 5/5/25- Keanu is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, when handler attempts to leash he backs away dodging the leash. Handler presents a treat and he comes forward to eat it, leash is presented again. He backs away as the leash touches him. Handler held out a treat lure again and was finally able to leash Keanu. He was taken for a street walk, he had a moderate pull. He had no reaction to any stimuli and was aloof with handler. He gently takes treats when offered. He was taken for an assessment where he was avoidant of second handler and not allowing collar. He had a slight tense body with a tucked tail staying next to first handler. Handlers ended assessment to not further stress Keanu. He was easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue.
Summary (7):: 5/1/25: ACS report that there has been difficulty leashing Keanu. When the handler approaches Keanu is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body. The handler uses spray cheese and Keanu is highly receptive. When the handler open to the kennel door to present the leash Keanu goes to the back of the kennel and vocalizes. The handler speaks in a soft tone and sprays more cheese on the door. As Keanu is eating the cheese the handler is able to place the leash. Keanu is taken to the yard where he pulls mildly and does not reactive to people. When seeing another dog Keanu becomes alert with a forward body and high flagging tail. Keanu allows the handler to clip their leash but pauses in front of his kennel. Keanu pulls towards the dog in the neighboring kennel. Handler tosses treats into kennel however he is not receptive. He is able to be guided into kennel using mild leash pressure. 4/29/25: (AFTERNOON WALK) Keanu is at the front, the leash is slowly draped over back of his head as Keanu is pushing his snout slowly out of the kennel, he is then easily leashed and pulls moderately out of kennel room. He walks on the street pulling moderately, he stops and sniffs on the street, relieving himself occasionally. Keanu is walked to the assessment room, he greets the assessor with a neutral body and takes treats firmly. Keanu ducks away when he sees the collar and avoids the assessor when they approach him. The assessment is ended and he is returned to his kennel without issue. 4/29/25- Keanu is at the front of the kennel with a slight tense body and head low, looking around. Handler presents a treat which he gently takes through his door. When attempting to leash Keanu tries to push out of his kennel, when the leash touched him he would retreat then again try to push out. Handler tossed a bunch of treats in his kennel and while eating them handler was able to leash. He scrambles out of the kennel exiting the room with his body and head low. He is taken to the play yard. He is aloof with handlers and sniffs every where. When he passes a pen with a dog in it, his hackles raise and his body is tense but no vocalization. Handler keeps walking and he follows. Handlers go into a pen and he sniffs around, relieving himself. When handler goes to clip him he lowers his body and moves away from them with a closed mouth head flip. Handler tosses treats on the ground, while he is eating handler is able to clip him. He slowly walks back when inside returning to his room with his head low, looking around. When outside his room he plants handler tosses treats ahead but doesn't move. Handler applies pressure to his leash and he enters the room. Outside his kennel he backs away, handler tosses treats into kennel but he continues to baulk. Handler has to muscle him into kennel and was able to remove leash without further issues.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Keanu so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Keanu's finder states that he will hard bark and growl towards strangers before warming up. They also state that he is fearful of loud noises. It is important to move slowly with Keanu, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Keanu has been observed to become tense when seeing another dog on leash. Keanu will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
