Summary:: Aries has been obsvered to be highly on leash reactive. Noted to hard bark and lunge towards dogs and people while on leash. Due to the high level of reactivity Aries is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (6):: 11/3/25: Aries is sitting down towards the back of his kennel as handler approaches, he is then easily leashed and removed from kennel. As he's removed he would attempt to pull hard towards the neighboring kennels and bark towards them. Aries is kept on a short and tight leash on the way out of the room, he is then taken out the yard where he would remain tense with his hackles raised. Aries is then taken into a pen where he would begin to dart on the leash looking for dogs, as he spots them he would begin to fixate on them but was easily redirected with treats. Aries would then relieve himself and begin to remain hypervigilant on the walk. Shortly after, he was easily clipped and returned back to his kennel with no further issue. 11/1/25: Aries is at the front of the kennel barking as handler approaches. He jumps up on the door as handler unlocks the kennel. He remains with paws on the door and handler uses a treat to lure him down. He is then leashed and removed using treats. Treats are tossed ahead on the ground and he does not pull towards the dogs. In the yard, he pulls hard with hackles raised tense body towards another dog in a pen. He then pulls hard and growls towards people passing the back gate. In the pen is rewarded for checking in with handler. When returning to kennel, he walks back on his back legs, pulling towards the other dogs.
Summary (7):: 10/30/25: For evening walk, Aries was observed low growling with tense body while visually fixating on MOPs with umbrellas on sidewalk. 10/30/25: Aries is sitting at the back of his kennel as handler approaches. He comes forward to the front and begins jumping at the door as the handler unlocks it. He is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats. He then pulls hard on his hind legs on the way outside to the yard. In the yard, he would jump on and off the bench and explore around to mark his territory. He would hard stare at dogs as they passed by and is able to be taken away as he takes treats. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and enters with no issues. 10/29/25: Aries is at the back of his kennel upon approach. As he spots the handler he begins to jump onto the kennel bars, and is then easily leashed. As Aries is being removed from his kennel, he is kept on a short and tight leash due to his kennel reactivity. He would attempt to pull hard and bark towards the kennels, once in the hallway he would become hypervigilant due to all of the barking and is then taken to the yard for his walk. He would pull hard and immediately relieve himself once going up the stairs. He would spot a dog, which shortly after Aries would become tense with his hackles raised and a stiff tail. Handler calls his name and attempts to redirect his attention with a treat, he would look at the handler and readily sit for the treat. Shortly after, he would continue to fixate on the neighboring dogs. Handler would then begin to walk around the perimeter, shortly after he is clipped and returned back to his kennel. 10/27/25: Handler reports that Aries was bucking with his hackles raised throughout the walk. 10/26/25:(PM)Aries is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body. He is easily leashed and taken to the backyard. In the yard, he approaches the handler with a wiggly body and wagging tail. He sniffs around the yard, relieving himself and engaging with the handler with a soft body. He looks to the dogs in the neighboring pen with his head raised and ears forward. Handler is able to call him away for treats which he takes gently. Aries is brought back inside the shelter. He pulls hard inside. A dog appears in the hallway and he lunges and barks towards the dog with a tense body and stiff tail. Aries pulls back to kennel and treats are used to return him. The leash is removed with

ENERGY LEVEL:: Aries is described as medium energy. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for them.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the high level of on leash reactivity we recommend an adult only home. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to hard barking, growling, and lunging towards unfamiliar and familiar dogs we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Aries' previous owner states that he will avoid and hide from strangers and children at first before warming up. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Aries would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: Aries' previous owner states that he will hard bark and growl towards familiar and unfamiliar dogs. During his stay in the care center Aries has been obsvered to hard barking and lunge towards dogs and people while on leash. Aries will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
