Animal Profile

Chase

Hello, my name is Chase. My animal id is #230691. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 2 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/29/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Chase is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Chase arrived at the Care Center as an owner surrender. During his intake, Chase was observed to be highly reactive to people and staff in lobby, growling and lunging as they walked by. His previous owner noted that she had cared for Chase for over a year, and that Chase has been persistently barking, and highly reactive. Chase was reported by his previous owner to growl, hard-bark, and attempt to bite guests entering the home or people when on walks. Two weeks prior to being at the Care Center, Chase bit another dog on the lip area after initially seeming to be loose and wiggly bodied on approach. Medically, Chase has dental disease and CIRDC which is progressing to pneumonia.

Date of assessment:: 9/3/2025

Summary:: Chase was reported to growl, snap and bite when handled, and has bitten the owner and a dog before. In the Care Centers, Chase was observed to hard bark and lunge in the lobby. Due to these behaviors, Chase will not get a handling assessment.

Summary (7):: 9/01/25: As handler approaches Chase's kennel, he is observed to be lying down towards the back. As the handler opens the kennel door, Chase has a tense body and slight whale eye. The handler attempts to use treats and squeaky sounds to coax Chase, which is unsuccessful. Handler then slowly places a large loop around Chase, which he constantly avoids and tries to move away from. Shortly after, handler is able to leash him and remove him from the kennel with ease. Chase is taken for a street walk, where he would walk ahead of the handler with a mild pull, tucked tail, and pinned ears back. Handler calls his name with a high-pitched voice, which is ignored. Chase wouldn't react to any stimuli and would periodically balk and not want to move. Handler slightly tugs on the leash, and Chase would then get up and continue to walk. He is then taken back to the shelter and is placed back in his kennel with ease. 8/30/25: Chase is laying down in his kennel with a tense body as handler approaches. The handler is able to slowly leash him on a pre-clip and he is able to exit his kennel with ease. He is then taken to the yard for a walk. In the yard, he had a tense body and tucked tail. He would stop behind the handler and quickly thrash on lead when he didn't want to continue walking. When he was ready to walk again, he would walk ahead of the handler and then baulks to ground when a dog in a pen nearby was barking. He is slowly taken back to his kennel and he enters with no issues

Summary:: Hard barking, lunging at people, biting leash

Date of initial:: 8/29/2025

ENERGY LEVEL:: Chase is described as high energy. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for them.
