Animal Profile

Scarf

Hello, my name is Scarf. My animal id is #218471. I am a female muted calico cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 1/12/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Scarf is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. A volunteer writes: Scarf was left in a carrier at a bus stop. Unable to help herself and completely reliant on a stranger's kindness, she had nothing but her hope to get her through the day. The good Samaritan who found Scarf was indeed very kind and was able to open the carrier door to pet her before bringing her to safety. Settling into shelter life has been a bit of an uphill battle for our travelling friend, however. After her time spent on unsteady ground, Scarf's been big on extravagant hisses and makes sure everyone knows she doesn't want any pets. Things have been admittedly a bit tough for Scarf but still we've been seeing her charming curiosity peek through as she eyes our offerings of treats and scratcher tools. We're hopeful things will turn her way and she'll find the love and family that she deserves.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Scarf was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on her behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 1/17/25 FB26 She sniffs the scratcher tool through the side portal door and hisses. She swats at the tool avoiding contact and remains inside the den. Left alone to reduce stress. 1/19/25 Vol. Scarf was in her feral den. I did not see her during the interaction. I offered squeeze-up on the scratcher too, but I didn’t hear/see any movement from within the den. I heard her low grow; so, I removed the scratcher and ended the interaction. 1/21/25 Vol. Sleeping in her litter box. Attempted Squeeze-ups on clicker but she hissed and growled so I stopped to avoid stress. Left her tuna in her bowl which she ate after I walked away. 1/22/25 Vol. Scarf was resting in loaf position in her litter box with tail tucked around body. Her eyes were wide and dilated. She hissed when approached, then returned slow blinks after a few moments. She hissed when offered squeeze up on scratcher tool, then extended her neck to sniff it. She hissed at a feather toy. Remained in place in her litter box throughout interaction. 1/24/25 Vol. Curled up in litter box, looked up when came by to read reports and put head back down. Put in squeeze treat bowl and Scarf crept forward to sniff both treat and food bowl - she looked at scratcher tool, pulled back to litter box and hissed. Remained erect, eyes round, ears forward. Lots of blinking as if sleepy and some lip licking. Put squeeze treat on scratcher tool and approached - pulled back and hissed but remained erect and alert. Finally crouched down. Removed tool, some more sweet talk and ended interaction.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Scarf was inside the den when approached. Upon sniffing the scratcher tool through the side portal door, she hissed and became alert, with wide eyes and forward ears. She slowly leaned away, avoiding contact, and swatted softly at the tool. The interaction ended to reduce her stress. Scarf is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
