Goku
Hello, my name is Goku. My animal id is #245540. I am a desexed male gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 4 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/13/2026.
Goku is at risk for behavior concerns of shelter deterioration. Goku has been noted to lick the kennel walls and glass and to bark and jump at the kennel door. Handlers have also needed to use distractions when leashing Goku due to leash biting. Goku allows handling and is social with handlers. Goku is apparently healthy.

Visit me today to find out my favorite treats and how you can take me home! Goku was dropped off at a police precinct without any background information and is now looking for a patient home where he can continue to build confidence and feel safe. He has been slowly coming out of his shell and shows a thoughtful, attentive personality once he warms up. My Ideal Home Goku will do best in an adult-only home with experience handling sensitive or fearful dogs. He benefits from slow introductions, predictable routines, and a calm environment where he is given time to decompress and choose interaction at his own pace. Good with Other Pets? Goku is recommended as a single pet at this time and should not attend dog parks. He has shown strong reactions to unfamiliar dogs during shelter introductions and will need continued support and management in environments where other dogs are present. Good with Kids? Not recommended for children under 13 due to fear-based reactivity and need for a calm, controlled environment. Things to Know Goku is treat-motivated and enjoys learning, already showing a cute habit of consistently offering his paw once he realizes it gets rewarded. He responds best to gentle handling and can be distracted and redirected with food. While he may bark or tense around unfamiliar people or situations, he can begin to settle with patience and slow introductions. Volunteer Writes A volunteer describes Goku as quietly endearing, especially noting his soft, expressive "puppy dog eyes" that immediately draw people in. One of his standout behaviors is how clearly he learns routines, particularly offering his paw with precision to the first person who rewards him. Despite arriving scared and overwhelmed from multiple transitions, he has started to show moments of trust and connection with familiar handlers. Volunteers note that beneath his initial worry, there is a sweet, observant dog who is beginning to enjoy human interaction and is ready to continue blossoming in a stable home.

Summary (3):: 6/3/26: A staff member went to look into Goku's kennel and Goku jumped onto the kennel door at the staff member and began barking. Goku then moved to their bed at the back of the kennel and continued to bark. 5/30/26: Goku is at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches and will begin to bark and jump onto the kennel door. The handler will drop some treats onto the floor and leash him while he eats the treats. Once he is done eating the treats he is then brought out on a walk where he will sniff around and occasionally check in with the handler for treats. When walking by the warehouses, Goku will focus sniffing right under the metal walls, sniffing deeply at times and tilting his head while he looks at the spot he was sniffing. He is then brought out on a long walk where he will sniff around and explore. At one point, Goku will begin sniffing intensely and his tail will helicopter as he follows a scent to the underside of a car. Afterwards, he is returned to kennel with no issue. 5/16/26: Goku was at front of kennel with a neutral body. He was easily leashed and taken for a street walk. While on the walk he maintained a neutral body except when he saw a dog. He would tense and stop. Handler was able to get him walking again easily with treats or a squeaker sound. He will eat the treat and continue to walk and sniff. Goku will pull hard back to kennel once in the Care Center and is secured safely. 5/2/26: Goku is at front of kennel barking as handler approached. Handler prepares to leash Goku by putting some spray cheese on the floor by the opening of the kennel door. As kennel door is opened Goku goes for cheese and handler leashes and pulls Goku from kennel. Exiting the kennel he pulls hard and keeps up that leash pressure for the duration of his walk. While on his walk a pigeon landed close by and he lunged at the pigeon pulling handler. Goku was returned to kennel with no issue.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We recommend Goku be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to Goku's behavior during playgroup, the behavior team recommends he goes home as a single pet and does not visit dog parks.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Kennel presence,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Goku is noted to jump on the handler often.Training should focus on reinforcing calm alternative behaviors, such as sitting for attention, and providing consistent structure during interactions. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Low threshold for arousal/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Upon intake when staff approached the vehicle and officers opened the door he began to growl and hard bark. When taken out of the kennel the dog explored the room, sniffing with a loose body. After exploring the room for a few minutes, he began to howl, bark, and growl. When medical took the leash, he growled, barked, and lightly thrashed. Shelter ops assisted with placing him behind the gate. While in the squeeze gate he growled, climbed the gate, and repeatedly snaped his head back.Training should prioritize safety, slow transitions, and reducing trigger stacking through predictable, low-pressure handling. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression and Low threshold for arousal. Kennel presence/Anxiety/barrier frustration: Goku is noted to jump up in front of his kennel repeatedly and bark. Training and management should emphasize calm kennel routines, distance-based reinforcement, enrichment, and structured handler approaches to help reduce arousal and promote more relaxed kennel behavior. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety and On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Leash Biting: Goku has been reported to intermittently leash bite when being removed from the kennel. He is treat-motivated and handlers have been offering him treats to manage the behavior while he is in care. Please see the handout on Arousal.
