Sasha is on the at-risk list for medical concerns. She has several serious co-morbidities including breast cancer, heart changes, and advanced dental disease. She needs care and attention that we cannot provide. Behaviorally, once she warms up to handler she prefers to be carried around but is known to snap at new handlers so a slow approach is needed.

Due to these detailed behaviors we recommend an adult only home at this time.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
Date of intake:: 5/13/2026
Spay/Neuter status:: Yes
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, With history
Other Notes:: Previous stay: 5/2/24: Owner Surrender During her previous stay in the care center, Sasha was not a candidate for a handling assessment due to snapping at handlers. *Previous assessments can be given upon request*
Date of assessment:: 5/17/2026
Summary:: Due to medical status a handling assessment will not be conducted at this time. A behavior determination will be made off enrichemnt notes. Sasha was surrendered as a stray, so their past behavior in a home setting is unknown. In the Care Centers, Shasha has allowed medical handling with a tense body. She was otherwise aloof to handlers. Shasha appears to be lethargic and did not approach handlers when they attempted to remove her from kennel. Familiar handlers state that she does not walk and has to be carried. During her previous stay in the care center, Sasha was noted to be highly fearful and would escalate to snapping and attempting to bite handlers. Sasha's determination is reflected in the limited behavioral information we've gathered and observed. However, it’s unclear whether their behavior will remain consistent or if new behaviors may emerge once they are fully medically cleared. Positive reinforcement should be used when working with Sasha. **5/7/24** Due to snapping at handler a handling assessment was not conducted during this time.
Summary:: 5/7/24: When greeting other dogs Sasha walked around in a circle and approached the gate panting. After approaching the gate Sasha continued walking in a circle, interaction was ended.
Summary (7):: 5/17/26 (Assessment): Sasha was sleeping when handler approached. Handler tapped on her to wake her when took a little while. Once awake she slowly lifted her head and it wobbled. She made no other movement. Handler thought it was best to leave her resting.

Summary:: aloof, tense for exam
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Sasha so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: Due to how uncomfortable Sasha is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Sasha has been observed to snap at handlers when uncomfortable. It is important to move slowly with Sasha, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Sasha to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: Sasha has been observed to be anxious in kennel, panting, pacing and walking in circles. If Sasha displays anxious behavior in her future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.
