Animal Profile

Sheela

Hello, my name is Sheela. My animal id is #245216. I am a desexed female brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 5 months old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 1/8/2026.

Sheela is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Sheela is noted to be reactive toward other dogs and has been observed vocalizing with persistent screeching and barking while pulling towards them. Similar behaviors have also been observed in the kennel areas. Despite this, Sheela engages well in training sessions and is highly motivated by treats. Medically, Sheela has allergies.

Sheela is a playful, affectionate girl who loves being around people. Found as a stray, she has quickly shown her cuddly side and will happily climb into your lap before bouncing off to chase a toy. Sheela is a long stay dog with a reduced adoption fee, ready to find a home of her own. Personality Sheela is social, wiggly, and full of energy. She loves attention, leans into affection, and often rolls over for belly rubs. She can be jumpy and playful when excited but settles with time. My Ideal Home Sheela would do best in an adult-only home with an experienced adopter. She will benefit from structure, routine, and continued positive reinforcement training. An active home that can give her outlets for her energy will help her thrive. Good with Other Pets? Sheela is not a candidate for dog parks and may become overwhelmed by other dogs, especially in high-energy situations. At this time, she would do best as the only pet. Continued training can help her build more positive associations over time. Good with Kids? Sheela would do best in an adult-only home. Her size, strength, and enthusiastic greetings may be too much for younger children. Things to Know Sheela pulls strongly on leash and will need continued work on her walking skills. She is very food and toy motivated, which will help with training. She is high energy and benefits from longer walks and playtime. Fun Fact Sheela loves to catch toys mid air and will proudly show off her skills during playtime.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 05/24/26: Sheela is introduced to a novel male while off leash. As she approaches the gate she immediately begins to screech loudly, fixating on the male even as she is being guided away. She does not refocus until the dog is out of sight. 4/22/26: Sheela is introduced to a novel male while off leash. Sheela at the gate offers bows, vocalizing and becomes increasing aroused as they bounce between the gate. The male dog offers a bow and is loose and they greet on leash. Sheela is vocalizing, pulling hard and when walking up the male dog begins to go under him, and attempt to mount several times, making the male dog uncomfortable and starting to run away from Sheela with tucked tail. Sheela is guided away from the male dog and continues to vocalize and stay aroused. 02/14/26 Sheela is introduced to a novel male while off leash. She approaches the gate with a neutral frame and play bows, but as the male stands square and tense, she begins screeching. Sheela is guided away from the gate and interaction is concluded.

Summary (4):: 06/06/26: Sheela is laying down as the handler approaches. She stands up and is leashed easily, but as soon as she exits the kennel, she begins vocalizing. She pulls hard throughout her walk, walking at the end of the leash the whole time. She occasionally sniffs, and when turning around to go back towards the building, Sheela sits and leans in for pets. She is returned to her kennel without issue. 6/5/26: It is reported by ACS staff that Sheela will screech, vocalize and bark incessantly on leash all the way until she reaches outside. She will also do it towards other dogs in the ramp but stops once she is in the yard. 5/30/26: Sheela was at front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approached. When handler unlocked kennel door she jumped once and settled and was easily leashed and pulled from kennel. While on walk Sheela pulled moderately and at times she would see something that she wanted to investigate and pulled hard to that location. When she saw another dog she would also pull hard in their direction, handler was able to refocus Sheela using treats and playing the 123 game. She was returned to her kennel with no issue. -TE 5/23/26: Sheela is standing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She begins jumping and barking at the door as the handler unlocks it. She is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats and she then pulls hard on the way outside to the play yard for playgroup. In the yard, she pulls hard to gate with a tense body and begins to growl, bark and vocalize towards the other dog. She would constantly try to pull back towards the dog as the handler takes her away and exits the pen. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. She then pulls hard on the way back to her kennel with no issues. 5/14/26: Sheela is siting at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She begins to bark and jump at the door as the handler unlocks the door. She is able to be leashed while being distracted with treats and is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, she pulls hard ahead while heavy panting and constantly jumps up on the handler with a loose body. She is comfortable siting to receive pets and treats. She would constantly pick up items on the ground and spits them out when she notices that they aren't treats. She pulls on the way back to her kennel and enters with no issues

Summary (5):: 5/14/26: Reported via whiteboard that staff had to removed karonda bed due to covering water 4/22/26 (playgroup): Sheela is at the front of the kennel screeching as the handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and brought to the play yard where her drag leash is clipped to her collar. She will play bow at the gate. (see dog to dog for more information) She is then returned to her kennel with no issue. 04/10/26 (Trainer Note): Sheela is laying down in her kennel as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Sheela runs around the room, picking up toys and throwing them. She intermittently engages with the handler and the snuffle mat and enthusiastically pushes her face into the muzzle. She leans into contact with a loose body. Sheela is easily leash ed and returned to kennel without issue. 04/02/26 (Trainer Note): Sheela is sitting on her karunda bed which she has pushed to the front of her kennel and it is covered in water. She is easily leashed and hops off her bed and out of the kennel. Sheela pulls strongly to the live room. When inside, Sheela is clipped to a drag leash and will greet a known handler enthusiastically. The handler and Sheela continue work on building duration in the muzzle. Sheela will enthusiastically put her nose in the muzzle and upon hearing the marker, will take it out to receive a treat. The handler will begin to build duration by withholding the marker for two seconds and feeding the treat into the muzzle. Each time Sheela takes the treat, she will move away from the muzzle and jump on the handler. The handler begins to cue a sit after she has eaten the treat and Sheela will oblige. Sheela is returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (6):: 3/28/26: Sheela is observed to be laying on the floor of her kennel vocalizing and screeching loudly while the rest of the room is silent. 03/28/26 (Trainer Note): Sheela's behavior remains the same as the 03/29/26 note. The handler works with her on building duration. 03/19/26 (Trainer Note): Sheela is standing at the front of her kennel as the handler approaches. She allows the handler to easily attach her harness and pulls mildly to the canine training room. Sheela is loose and social with the handler. The handler reinforces her for any contact with the muzzle. Sheela is able to fully place her face into the muzzle and hold it for a few seconds. She is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 3/14/26: Sheela is standing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is able to be clipped to her harness while being distracted with treats and then pulls on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, she would constantly jump up on the handler with a loose body to demand for treats. She would sniff around to explore and eat small pieces of treats that she could find off the ground. She is able to sit to receive treats. She has no reactions to people and is able to be redirected when she would stare at dogs. She pulls hard on the way back to her kennel and is able to enter with no issues. 3/14/26: Sheela is reported on the rounds board to attempt to eat anything off the ground when being walked. 3/8/26: Sheela is at the front of her kennel as the handler approaches. She is given some treats in kennel to eat while the handler clips the leash to her harness. She will come out of the kennel jumping around the handler. They toss some treats ahead of them to refocus her. She will then continue walking forward, pulling moderately out to the sidewalk. Once outside, Sheela will whine at dogs that pass on the ramp and is briefly able to be refocused. She will jump at the handler's hand occasionally and mouth at them with a loose body but is eventually able to be refocused. Throughout the majority of the walk, Sheela will sniff around, stopping to take in scents for a prolonged period of time. After a while, she is then returned to her kennel with no issue. 03/02/26: Sheela is standing at the front of her kennel with a loose frame and allows handler to leash her with ease. She is escorted to the assessment room for enrichment purposes. Once inside, a drag leash is placed on her. Sheela runs around the room with a loose, wiggly body, socializing appropriately with multiple handlers. She engages independently with toys, including lick mats, snuffle mats, and a pupsicle toy. She self-entertains and transitions easily between enrichment items. Sheela frequently jumps up on handlers, leaning in for touch and seeking treats. She also engages in a game of fetch with a tennis ball. When the session is complete, Sheela is returned to her kennel safely without any issues.

She displays mild arousal but allows all handling and runs without escalation. She does not respond to knock and will grip a toy and run. Mild mouthing behaviors are observed. Sheela is returned to her kennel safely without any issues. 2/14/26 (gate greet): Sheela is at the front of her kennel as the handler approaches, jumping on the door of her crate. She is leashed with ease and will come out of the crate quickly, jumping out of the crate. She will pull moderately to the yard. Sheela does not have a collar on so she is kept on leash. Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We recommend Sheela is placed in an adult-only home at this time. Single-Pet Home/Recommend No Dog Parks: Due to Sheela's Dog-Dog Summary and on-leash reactivity combined with her escalations when a dog ran up to her in care, the Behavior Department recommends that Sheela not be taken to dog parks and should be the only resident pet. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to counter-condition and desensitize Sheela to help her associate other dogs with positive experiences, such as toys or treats.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control/Social hyperarousal/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Sheela has difficulty self-regulating and begins interactions playfully but quickly escalates into hyperarousal. She jumps on the handler and becomes mouthy, putting her mouth on hands and clothing. She also runs around the room with zoomies and rapidly becomes over-stimulated, though she can be coaxed into a sit with treats after some time. Training should focus on reinforcing calm engagement, teaching alternative behaviors for attention, and redirecting mouthiness to appropriate items while working on impulse-control skills. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control/Social hyperarousal/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Anxiety: Sheela displays anxiety through heavy open-mouth panting and a flushed face. Providing a predictable routine, calming enrichment, and reinforcing relaxed behavior can help her settle more effectively and reduce arousal-related stress. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. On-leash Reactivity: At the care center, Sheela has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, pulling towards them while barking and screeching. She may need positive reinforcement, reward-based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. Please see handout On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
