Pre-Screener FormJoey is at risk due to behavior concerns. He arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During his assessment Joey approached the handler initially social. He jumped up on the handler while standing on their hind legs. Joey then quickly escalated to lunging towards the handler and snapping at their abdomen. The handler had to straight arm Joey to keep him away. It is also reported Joey thrashes when returning to kennel. It is reported while in shelter he bounces exuberantly towards people passing on the street while out walking. Medially he has BOAS and is deaf.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Joey so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No Children: Based on Joey's observed behaviors in care, we recommend a home with no children. Place with a New Hope Partner: Based on the behavior challenges listed below we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: During Joey's assessment he was observed to suddenly lunge towards the handler and snap at them. He will need careful management to work toward reducing triggers for Benny and reducing the resulting bites. It is important to move slowly with Joey, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
