Animal Profile

Knight

Hello, my name is Knight. My animal id is #235578. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 8/30/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- death of owner.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Knight is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Knight might have less stress around other cats as he comes from a hoarding case.

Knight tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Knight was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. Bite or Scratch history: The volunteer opened up Knights kennel slowly. He stated that Knight was sitting at the front of the kennel and when he went to reach his hand out Knight swatted at his hand. This caused volunteer to have 2 small puncture wounds on the side of his left hand that drew blood.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 9/11/25 FB61 Knight was hiding in his cardboard box as I approached, body and face completely borrowed beneath multiple blankets. He remains frozen as I lift his Blankey and he does not move when offered treats, pet with the scratcher tool, or given a catnip toy. I speak to him softly and keep the interaction brief at this time. After his DOH hold is up we may try introducing him to some of his hoarding brothers and sisters. We hope that this will help him adjust to the shelter and reduce stress. 9/20/25 FB79 Inside of his hidey box Knight has wide eyes when i lift the linen and slow blinks when i speak to him. He has a neutral/relaxed body and loose tail when i toss some treats and when i bring the tool he remains still while i pet the top of his head. he allows pets down and along his back with no reaction and starts to eat his treats when i close the kennel door and end the interaction. I later see him peaking out looking around the room. 9/25/25 FB79 Inside of his den, Knight can be heard hissing when i open the kennel door; he strikes the glass with force and has wide dilated eyes with his back arched and flat ears. When i bring the asses-a-hand in he swats and attempts to strike through the glass while hiss, growling and grumbling. He backs himself into the corner as he closely watches the tool enter the den and lung/swats it before leaning in to bite and get go of it. He continues to hiss, growl/grumble with his body tense until i lower the den cover and close his kennel. 9/28/25 Vol. Knight was inside the den. I could hear him grumbling. As I lifted the den cover, he swatted the clear side of the den with his paw, hissing. I spoke to him as he alternated between hissing and grumbling. I replaced the den cover and spoke to him through it, so that he could hear my voice but not see me. I heard low grumbles coming from within, so I ended the interaction. 10/06/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, completely hidden from view. I know he's been deteriorating so I just gently toss some treats towards his den door and then close the kennel again. I lift the cover a few moments later and he's out of his den already eating his treats! He hisses with flattened ears when he notices me and I slow-blink at him before ending the session. Not open to hands on interactions at this time, but he is still food motivated! Will continue to build positive associations. 10/10/25 FB79 Knight continues to display fearful behaviors when socialization is attempted. He hissed and struck the glass when i lifted the den cover and had a very tense body with his ears flat to his head. He didn't care for any of the treats or enrichment i offered. 10/15/25 FB58 Outside of the den but runs back in quickly as I approach. He lunges when the cover is lifted, tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated as he low growls and hisses. I offer treats and he sniffs the air, appearing curious but again hisses. He appears curious about the laser, and settles.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer for more information.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Knight was lying in the back of their kennel as the assessor approached, body and face tense with their ears tilted, pupils dilated and tail wrapped tightly around their body. Knight made eye contact when spoken to and they flattened their ears as the kennel door opened. Knight tolerated petting along their head and body with the scratcher tool while hissing continuously and not escalating further. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. 9/15/25 Inside of his hidey box/bed, Knight is curled up with his tail wrapped around his body, his eyes are wide and his ears are forward when the bedding is slowly lifted. Knight tenses up when the pointer tool is brought close for him to sniff as he sits up with an arched back, hunched in shoulders and his eyes watch closely was his tail slowly wraps around his legs. Knight remains still as he looks around the room when the tool is ran down his back as well as around his body. He did however, slightly start to lean into cheek rubs and started to slow blink while receiving chin rubs. Knight maintained a arched back and had no interest in any treats offered and was not able to be coaxed forward or out of the box and pick up was not attempted at this time. 10/02/25 Although tolerant initially, Knight appears to be deteriorating in our care center at this time. Knight was in his cat den as the assessor approached, ears completely flat, eyes wide and body low. Knight made eye contact and hissed when spoken to and he began striking his den walls while spitting/hissing as the kennel door opened. Knight poked his paw out of his den and swatted the assess-a-hand as it reached towards him. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Knight is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat / scratch and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
