Summary:: 7/22/25: Max greets M MMB dog at the gate with relaxed face, neutral body, wide wagging tail. Max was found as a stray and lived with the finder for 2 weeks. He was reported to reactive on leash to large dogs. Colby has shown high level of barrier frustration passing kennels while growling at other dogs.

Summary (1):: Max is a very social and affectionate male dog who is also highly active and playful. He spends most of his time wherever people are, especially in the living room, always eager to be part of the action. Max absolutely loves bath time and being in the water, making grooming an enjoyable experience for him. On walks, he has a leash rating of 3, showing mild to moderate pulling, and typically goes out 3–4 times a day. However, his walks are short—10 minutes max—since he tires quickly and will often lay in the grass for a breather. Max is crate trained and does very well in the largest crate, spending up to 8 hours there comfortably. He also loves car rides, making travel easy and fun. He knows basic cues like "sit" and "stay" and is described by his previous owner as a sweet, sentimental dog—though he may appear intimidating at first, he’s really just a big teddy bear. It took a week to hear his first bark, and he enjoys tug-of-war games before settling down to rest for hours. His favorite things include any kind of treats, playing with toys, and being around people. When he seems clingy, it usually means he's bored and looking for a toy. While he's still working on building endurance during walks, Max is a lovable companion who’s happy to snooze once playtime is over.

Summary (5):: 8.9 Max is at the front of his kennel. When staff attempts to leash him, he begins to jump and rope bite, biting and holding onto the leash. He ignores treats, high-value treats, and toys, focusing on the rope. After multiple attempts, staff are finally able to leash Max and take him for a walk. Max walks with a soft body and pulls a mild amount. He is responsive to staff and is easily returned to his kennel. 8.5 Max is at the front of his kennel. He has a soft and energetic body. He is easily roped and taken for a walk. Max walks with a soft body and mild pulling. He ignores people passing and stays calm as staff are approached by a member of the public. When Max sees another dog, he becomes alert and stares at the other dog, relaxing when the other dog is out of view.

Summary (6):: 7/31 Max is at the front of the kennel and easily leashed by staff. Max pulls a little till getting outside, where he walked with a loose leash and was very aware of his surroundings. Max allowed pets and took treats on his walk. Max was taken back to his kennel with no issue 7.29 Max is at the front of his crate when approached; he is soft and calm as staff leashes him. While walking in the hallway, Max pulls towards other staff members to greet them, with a soft body. Max is brought on a walk. During his walk, Max has a soft body and pulls a mild amount. Max is responsive to staff and is easily returned to his crate. 7.26 Max is at the front of his crate when approached. Max is easily leashed and taken to a yard. In the yard, Max relieves himself then approaches staff. Max has a soft and wiggly body and puts his front paws on the staff member's lap. Max leans into pets and is wiggly. When the staff stands up and walks in the yard, Max follows them and runs around with an exuberant and soft body. Max is taken on a brief walk where he pulls a moderate amount. Max is easily returned to his kennel.

Summary (7):: 7.24.2025: Max is avoidant of the leash, ducking and dodging with attempts to secure him. It takes several attempts until he can be removed from the kennel. He pulls in the hall and is brought on a walk around the building. In the yard, a drag leash is attached, and he has a soft body, exploring the environment. He leans into pets, jumping up on handlers at times. He remains soft throughout. He jumps away from the leash at the end of the session but is quickly secured and returns without issue.   7.20.25 Max was at the front of his kennel when approached. Colby was rope evasive when staff attempted to leash him, moving and dodging out of the way of the leash. Once leashed, Colby was taken to the yard. When leaving the dog room, Max growled at the other dogs in kennels. In the yard, Max was tolerant and allowed staff to fit and put a collar on him, while maintaining a neutral body. Max was put on a drag leash. He stayed close to staff and followed them around the yard. When staff sat down, Colby eventually approached and sat by them, accepting gentle pets. He was easily returned to his kennel.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to low threshold for arousal, we recommend an adult only home. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Max is reported to be highly reactive to cats and dogs. We recommend he be the only pet and does not visit the dog park.

Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Max is noted to have accidents in the house and will likely need guidance with house training. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Please see the handout on House Soiling. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Max lacks basic manners, often jumping up on staff members. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see the handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Handling/touch sensitivity: Max is head shy, avoiding the slip lead and making it difficult to remove him from kennel. This may be a shelter specific behavior as it is still new to him. He head whips when his paws are touched. We recommend going slow with him and allowing him to initiate interactions. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Max is reported to hard bark and growl at other large dogs while on leash. We have seen barrier frustration as well when he passes other dogs in kennel. His adopter should be familiar with managing reactivity and positive reinforcement training to improve reactivity should it become problematic in his future home.
