Ellie
Hello, my name is Ellie. My animal id is #241644. I am a desexed female gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 6 months old.
I came into the shelter as a returns on 2/28/2026.
Ellie is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns in her previous home and in the care center. In Ellie's previous home, Ellie had an incident where she lunged at a small dog and pinned it to the ground, requiring intervention to get away from the small dog. Ellie was able to disengage from the situation when redirected with a treat after several attempts. Ellie also in the care center has been starting to kennel fighting leaving the kennel room, making it difficult to walk her safely at times. Ellie is in the care center and social and affectionate with staff. Medically, Ellie is apparently healthy.

In Ellie's previous home, Ellie had an incident where she lunged at a small dog and pinned it to the ground, requiring intervention to get away from the small dog. Ellie also in the care center has been starting to kennel fighting leaving the kennel room, making it difficult to walk her safely at times. Ellie is in the care center and social and affectionate with staff. Medically, Ellie is apparently healthy. Meet Ellie! Ellie was found as a stray, tied to a fence on Liberty Ave & Sackman St. She was friendly and easy to transport to the shelter, and from the start has shown herself to be a social, affectionate girl who is eager to connect with people. Personality Ellie is a wiggly, loving, high-energy girl who truly enjoys people. She seeks attention, especially butt scratches, and is very food motivated, which makes her a great candidate for continued training. She can get very excited and may be jumpy when she's happy to see you, but it all comes from a place of enthusiasm and affection. A previous foster describes her as 60 lbs of pure love, the perfect companion for both long walks and lazy sofa time. At home, she loves to snuggle close and will happily try to fit right into your lap if you let her. She also handles alone time well, staying calm and quiet until her people return. Training & Needs Ellie is still working on some basic manners and impulse control. She will benefit from structure, consistency, and continued positive reinforcement training. Because she is energetic and easily excited, she does best with an adopter who can guide her with patience and help her channel her enthusiasm in positive ways. Ideal Home Ellie would thrive in an active, experienced home that can provide both physical exercise and mental enrichment like walks, chews, and food puzzles. A calmer home environment without young children will help her feel more settled and allow her to continue building confidence and manners at her own pace.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 03/07/26: Ellie was introduced to a greeter female dog. At the gate, Ellie rushed forward displaying a flagging tail. When the greeter female approached with a loose frame, Ellie escalated to barking, whining, and hard pawing at the gate. As handlers began to separate the dogs, Ellie paced along the gate line while continuing to whine. She repeatedly pulled toward the gate but was able to briefly refocus her attention on the handler before reorienting back toward the greeter female and pulling in that direction again. Both dogs were successfully separated, concluding the interaction. 11/16/25 Ellie is introduced at the gate to a male helper dog while off leash at the care center. Ellie will approach the gate appearing conflicted as she runs to and from the gate line alert barking. Ellie displays forms of arousal as she lacks focus displaying wide-dilated eyes and hypersalivating. She doesn't pay any mind to the helper dog, running around her pen aimlessly. She is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

She is easily leashed and jumps at the handler as she exits the kennel. Ellie will attempted to kennel fight and is quickly led to the corridor. The handler takes Ellie through the corridor and changes direction as they see another dog coming towards them. Ellie will then pull towards the Live Room, passing through the handler's legs. Ellie is led outside and will disengage from a dog on the ramp and is marked and rewarded. Ellie and the handle will play Ping Pong on the street and Ellie will calmly engage with the game as other dogs pass and cross the street. Ellie will accept pets before being safely returned to her kennel. 04/27/26 (Trainer Note): Ellie was standing at the front of her kennel as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulled mildly outside. When at the back of the care centre, the handler and Ellie play some superbowls. Ellie was able to sit and orient to the handler in between the targets with ease. A staff member was walking a dog close by and Ellie fixated briefly. The handler marked this and delivered the treat to the target. Ellie was then able to disengage a further four times from the same dog with ease, the handler delivering the treat to the target each time. Another dog came close and the handler was able to engage Ellie in some Ping Pong. Ellie engaged with the game, and would briefly look to the dog and back to the handler with a loose body. When walking back to the care centre, Ellie took a toy from the street and shook it to the door where she would drop it. Ellie was returned to her kennel without issue.

Ellie will then shred two toys, both times taking the squeakers in her mouth and exchanging for treats. The handler will give Ellie a lick mat whilst they clean up and she will readily engage with it. Date of intake:: 2/28/2026
Summary:: riendly and outgoing, loose wiggly body
Date of initial:: 3/1/2026
Summary:: Wiggly, seeks butt scratches, very food motivated
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Ellie so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Ellie's behavior concerns reportred by her previous adopter, basic manners and handling sensitivity we recommend she goes to a home without children. SINGLE-PET HOME/RECOMMEND NO DOG PARKS: Due to concerning behavior reported on an outing with a previous adopter, we feel that Ellie should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until her behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Ellie associate dogs with things she enjoys like toys or treats.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Ellie has demonstrated a lack of basic manners in the care center, jumping up onto staff. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it,” “Sit/Stay,” and “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. See handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Handling/touch sensitivity: Ellie has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, especially when a person is reaching over her/him. It is important to always go slow and give Ellie the option to walk away from any social interaction. Ellie should never be forced to approach anything that she/he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Ellie’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Ellie may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her/his new surroundings. Anxiety: Elle is a bit anxious in the care center. We recommend Ellie go on long walks along with other enrichment items for mental and physical stimulation to help alleviate her anxiety. Please see handout on generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: During her stay in care, Ellie has been observed to hard stare at dogs but was able to be redirected with treats. While on an outing with a previous adopter, she lunged at a small dog and laid on top of the smaller dog until offered a treat. Please see hadnout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
