Juan
Hello, my name is Juan. My animal id is #221816. I am a desexed male gray tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/29/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive to other animals.
Juan is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display challenging behavior during interactions. He is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! Cheek and chin scratches make me so happy! I am a cat that is in need of a lap! I can't wait to be your new lap cat. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. Jason solicits attention and accepts petting but may be assertively demanding of attention or may play roughly. Due to overstimulation we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced cat parent home. Due to his prior bite/scratch history we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced cat parent home. A volunteer writes: Napping on top of his little den, Juan actually has a paw on the pulse of Adoptions. This is a great job for him as Juan is no stranger to variety and range, plus he's ready to join in at a moment's notice. Managing to somehow stretch out and curl into himself by reaching his little paws to me, Juan is one particularly well rounded party fellow. Gently tucking his head into my hand, Juan was happy to cuddle but sat right up when he saw the pipe cleaner feather in my hand. Grabbing it with both paws to pull it back toward him, Juan's adventurous and engaging with a terrific sense of fun. While we don't know too much about his life before he came to us, he's been using his time here to make friends. Happily headbutting and proudly purring, he's practicing his first impressions because he knows he really has to make them count for when he meets you.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
KNOWN HISTORY:: Juan was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. Bite or Scratch history: Yes, reported.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/3/25 PRIOR ASSESSMENT: Jason was resting on top of the den, alert with soft eyes. He quickly engaged the assessor, approaching with a soft body, tail high, and pilo-erect at the base. He head-bunted the assessor's hand, seeking attention. After a few strokes along his body, he leaned in and became mouthy with gentle pressure. During the pickup, he remained calm, and once placed back down, he tolerated more attention. To prevent further escalation, the assessment was ended, but while closing the kennel door, Jason reached out and attempted to grip the assessor's hand with mild pressure and claws retracted. He was easily distracted by offered treats. 5/5/25 PRIOR ASSESSMENT: Juan was at the front, sitting on his haunches and appearing calm. He sniffed the treats, and when the door was opened, he allowed gentle petting on the top of his head and along his cheek. However, before long—and without any warning—he pulled back and attempted to swat, though he didn’t make contact. He then allowed more gentle petting on the top of his head, but it appears that cheek petting may overstimulate him quickly. His tail began to swish slightly, and he attempted to swat again.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Juan was sitting upright on the ledge upon approach, appearing curious with soft eyes and relaxed, forward-facing ears. He briefly allowed head petting but soon began to bat at the assessor’s hand and gently mouth it, signaling discomfort. The interaction was ended to prevent potential escalation. Juan solicits attention and accepts petting but may be assertively demanding of attention or may play roughly. Due to overstimulation we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced cat parent home. Due to his prior bite/scratch history we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced cat parent home.
