Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 9/22/26: Shmokey-Grey is introduced to a novel intact female and is loose and wiggly at the fence with mid level wags, sniffing the dog along the fence line, toe tapping, and standing on the fence. The other dog is let into the yard and Shmokey pulls hard towards her, engaging in mutual sniffing with a loose and wiggly body. He playfully bounces, the other dog is tense and the two are given a break. They reapproach and the other dog stands over him, wrapping her paws around his neck and head with a tense body. Shmokey-Grey remains loose and is tolerant, displacement toe tapping while retreating as the other dog is pulled off. They take a break and when reintroduced, the other dog again leaps on him with a tense body, wrapping her paws around him. Shmokey-Grey bounces backwards, attempting to engage in play instead, but ultimately retreats due to the other dog's behavior. 9/5/26: Shmokey-Grey is introduced to a novel intact female and is tense with an outstretched neck while sniffing nose to nose through the fence. He disengages and sniffs in the catch pen, then reapproaches with a neutral-tense body and mid level wags.

Summary (4):: 9/22/26: Shmokey Grey is at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly body; he is easily leashed and brought out the room, which he pulls moderately out off. When walking through the driveway, Shmokey fixates on a dog being walked back into the building; he disengages when the handler pulls him away and the dog is out of sight. He also attempts to chase a bird, but it flies away. Shmokey walks with mild leash tension and doesn't react to people. After relieving himself, the handler presents to him a handful of treats, but he shows no interest, as he jumps and attempts to grab their leg with his front legs; the handler straight arms the leash to remove him. The handler shows Shmokey the treats again, and he shows interest; the handler tosses them on the ground, and Shmokey eats, they clean up after him. Shmokey continues the walk with a loose body. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Shmokey to his kennel. 9/21/26: Shmokey Grey is at the front of the kennel with a loose, wiggly body and a wagging tail. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately out of the kennel room. Handler scatters treats on the ground as they take the elevator downstairs. Shmokey sniffs the treats but shows no further interest. Shmokey is taken downstairs towards the driveway where he pulls moderately towards a spot to relieve himself. As the handler bends down to clean up after him, Shmokey jumps onto the handler and begins to mount them. He is quickly straight armed off and attempts to jump up towards the handler. He is straight armed again. Shmokey is walked to the street and he walks with a slack leash besides the handler. He sniffs various spots on the ground and relieves himself again. He tries to jump on the handler before they try to clean up after him. Handler tosses treats away from them and Shmokey goes after the treats. Handler is able to clean up after Shmokey while is he distracted with treats. Shmokey is then walked back to the shelter and take back upstairs. He is then returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (5):: 9/19/26: Shmokey Grey is at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly body; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. During the elevator ride, the handler pets Shmokey and he moves around with a very loose body. He pulls out the building, but eases the tension. Shmokey walks with mild leash tension and no reactivity to people. After he relieves himself, Shmokey approaches the handler and sniffs their leg; the handler presents a handful of treats, which he shows interest in, and they toss it on the ground for him to eat. They are able to clean after him without him attempting to mount them. Shmokey continues the walk with a loose body. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Shmokey to his kennel with ease. 9/17/26: Shmokey Grey is at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly body; he is easily leashed ad brought out the kennel. Shmokey looks at the kennels while exiting, but isn't reactive. After he relives himself, Shmokey approaches the handler and attempts to mount them, but they straight arm the leash and pull him away twice; he stops anymore attempts. Shmokey walks with mild leash tension; when he sees dogs, he stares at them with a slight tense body, only disengaging when the handler calls and pulls him away. Shmokey allows pets from the handler, as well as takes treats softly. Shmokey is returned to his kennel after he is brought inside. 9/16/26: Shmokey Grey is at the front of the kennel with a loose and wiggly body and wagging tail. He is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel. He pulls hard out of the room and is brought downstairs towards the street. Shmokey walks with a slack leash slightly ahead of the handler. He relieves himself a few times. As the handler cleans up after him, Shmokey jumps up and begins to mount the handler. He is straight armed off the handler. The walk continued and Shmokey stops and sniffs various spots. Treats are tossed ahead of him occasionally and he ignores them. As he is walked back to the shelter, several dogs pass back and forth. He pulls hard towards them with a forward, tense body. Handler calls to him with vocal sounds and uses squeakers but he is unable to be redirected and remains fixated on the dogs. Handler has to use leash tension to keep him away. He is then taken back inside the shelter and returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (6):: 9/15/26: Shmokey Grey is at the front of his kennel with a wiggly body; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. Shmokey allows pets from the handler. On the street, Shmokey walks with mild leash tension. After he relieves himself, the handler tosses treats on the ground and cleans after him; Shomkey approaches and sniffs the handler, but they gently push him away and he stops. After the walk, the handler brings Shmokey inside and returns him with ease. 09/14/26: Shmokey Grey is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches, he is exuberant near the front of kennel and jumps on the kennel door. Shmokey is leashed and removed from kennel, treats are tossed nearby to distract him from the passing dogs but he ignores them. Handler keeps him on a short leash and walks him out of the room. He pulls moderately to the hall and jumps up impatiently on handler for treats until he walks out to the street. Outside Shmokey relieves himself and will pull toward people inquistively as they pass. He pulls forward and pants heavily during the walk, when seeing dogs he will stare at them and fixates moderately but is redirected with leash pressure. He is walked for a while before being brought back inside. Toward the end of the walk Shmokey jumps on handler and begins mounting them. Handler pulls them off and keeps them on a short leash before returning them to kennel without issue 9/12/26: Shmokey Grey is at the front of his kennel with a wiggly body; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. Shmokey presents a wiggly body, jumping on the handler and soliciting pets. Shmokey walks with mild leash tension; he notices dogs fixates on them, only disengaging when the handler pulls him away. When the handler bends down to clean after him, Shmokey jumps on and mounts them. When the handler straight arms the leash to pull him off, Shmokey goes back to mount; he does this a few more times. The handler bends down to see if Shmokey can be redirected with treats; as Shmokey mounts them, the handler puts treats in his face, but he shows no interest, so they straight arm him again. Shmokey jumps on them to mount a few more times after that. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Shmokey to his kennel. 9/12/26: Shmokey Grey is reported to mount a handler when they bend down to clean after him on the street

Summary (7):: 9/10/26: Shmokey Grey is observed to be kennel reactive; he pulls towards the kennels as he exits. 9/8/26: Shmokey Grey is at the front of his kennel with a wiggly body; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. After crossing the street, Shmokey sees a dog and looks back at them a few times before disengaging on his own. He walks with mild leash tension. When another dog across the street barks at him, Shmokey looks at them with a neutral body; he then barks back at the once and disengages on his own. Shmokey engages with the handler by jumping on them with a loose body. Shmokey is brought inside for his assessment (see notes). As they exit the office, Shmokey attempts to get closer to another dog that is being walked into a nearby room; he is returned to his kennel with ease. 9/6/26: Shmokey Grey is at the front of the crate with a wiggly body and wagging tail. He is barking repeatedly. Handler leashes him and Shmokey is taken out of the crate. He is brought into the behavior office where he jumps up and down on surfaces with his front paws. Handler sits on the couch and attempts to place on collar on Shmokey. He begins to jump up and down exuberantly and pawing at the handler. Handler stands up and Shmokey jumps up towards the handler's abdomen, he wraps his front paws on the handler and stares with a tense face. Handler straight arms him. Shmokey then repeatedly jumps up towards the handler several times with a tight mouth. Handler straight arms him and Shmokey stops. Handler sprays cheese on the couch and Shmokey spends sometime licking it. After, Shmokey is walked towards the street. On the street, Shmokey walks with a slack leash, he relieves himself several times. He occasionally looks back towards the handler with a whale eye. Handler tosses him treats and Shmokey is not receptive. Shmokey is panting and has a strained expression as he is walked back towards the shelter. He is briefly taken towards the backyard where he repeats the behavior of jumping towards the handler with a tight mouth and tense. Shmokey is walked around the perimeter a few times before he is walked back towards his kennel. He is returned without issue. 9/6/26: It was reported that Shmokey Grey has broken out of his pop-up crate on two separate occasions. 9/5/26: Shmokey Grey is lying in his crate; as he sits up, he dodges the leash when they attempt to leash him. Eventually the handler leashes Shmokey and brings him out the crate. He is brought to the yard for playgroup (see notes); afterwards he is brought back to his crate. He doesn't enter on his own, so the handler tosses treats and muscles him in. 9/3/26: Shmokey Grey is observed to bite and tug on his crate bars, causing the front panel to become bent inwards. A staff member reports that they see Shmokey sticking his head and part of his body out of the crate.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Shmokey -Grey so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to poor impulse control, we recommend an adult only home. Place with a New Hope Partner: due to poor impulse control and social hyperarousal we recommend an adopter/foster through one of our New Hope partners who can provide consistent structure, enrichment, exercise, and reward-based training to help manage his arousal and mounting behavior. Shmokey-Grey came into ACC as a stray. Because of this, we do not know how he is in a home environment. During his time in the care center, he has been noted to kennel fight and fixate on dogs and can only be disengaged when the handler pulls him away. He has been noted to mount handlers when they bend over to pick up his feces. In one instance Shmokey repeatedly jumps up towards the handler several times with a tight mouth this behavior is repeated and hard to redirect. Shmokey is noted allow pets and present with a wiggly body. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Shmokey has been observed to jump up on handlers in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Mouthiness: Shmokey has been observed to mouth handlers with mild pressure. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy, and ending play or attention whenever Shmokey puts teeth on skin. They should be rewarded with attention and treats when they stop and/or when they are seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness. On Leash Reactivity: Shmokey has been observed to bark at a dog when seeing them on leash. Shmokey is also noted to kennel fight when leaving the kennel rooms. Shmokey will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Social Hyperarousal: Shmokeu quickly becomes overaroused in the presence of people, jumping up and mounting. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Shmokey to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Shmokey. Please see hand out on Social Hyperarousal
