Animal Profile

Marvelous

Hello, my name is Marvelous. My animal id is #224097. I am a desexed female white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 4/7/2025.

Marvelous is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Marvelous is not doing well in the care center environment and remains highly stressed in her kennel despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. Marvelous begins to paw slap, scale/rebound off her kennel walls and dig at her kennel door throughout the day. Medically, Marvelous is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you.

My medical notes are...

Summary:: Due to Marvelous entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 04/11/25: When off leash at the Care Center Marvelous is introduced to a greeter male dog. At the gate Marvelous approaches with a neutral frame. Both dogs scent one another through the gate. Marvelous will begin stress barking with his paw raised and a tucked tail. Marvelous will continue to bark as he continues to become aroused, displaying dilated eyes. Both dogs are separated, thus ending the interaction. 04/10/25 Marvelous is introduced at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Marvelous doesn't approach the gate, unable to settle, pacing back and forth. Marvelous will vocalize at the novel female dog, working their self-up and becoming aroused. Marvelous is moved away from the gate in order to decompress before being returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (4):: 6/16: Marvelous continues to dig and slam on her kennel door. 06/13/25 (Trainer Note): Marvelous is laying down on her bed when the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Marvelous engages readily with the various enrichment items, moving between each with the handler and taking a breath between. Handler pulled her off to the side and worked with her on take a breath and the 123 game. Marvelous participated readily. She was easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 6/11: Marvelous was seen to jump up and scale one side of her kennel wall while panting at least 3 times repeatedly. 06/06/25 (Trainer Note): Marvelous is standing in kennel with a mild pant and dilated pupils as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. She allows the handler to attach a drag leash with a loose, wiggly body and moves frenetically around the room, jumping up onto the couch and off again. Marvelous interacts readily with the various enrichment items, orienting towards the handler between each and intermittently breathing. The handler pulls her off to the side and works with her on breathing on cue and the 123 game. Marvelous is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 06/01/25 Witnessed paw slapping kennel door excessively. Handler will return to her kennel to administer a knuckle bone.

Summary (5):: 05/30/25 (Trainer Note): Marvelous is laying down in kennel as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. She initially runs frenetically around the room with a loose body, intermittently interacting with the handler for a moment or two before moving away again. The handler sits on the couch and Marvelous runs over, jumping up onto the couch and leaning in to solicit contact. The handler pets her for a minute or two and she is then interested in the various enrichment items. Handler moves Marvelous from item to item and she begins to orient towards the handler between items. She is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue 5/27 (PM): Marvelous was observed to dig and bang on her kennel door for several seconds 05/27/25 (trainer note): Marvelous was lying down in her kennel as handler approached. She stood up with a loose frame and tail wag and was easily leashed and walked to the live room. She excites easily and will jump on handler if spoken to in baby talk. Handler provides Marvelous with enrichment to help her decompress. Handler used the enrichment to distract and keep Marvelous still as handler has her fitted for a collar. Marvelous engaged with the enrichment and is tolerant of her collar being placed and adjusted. Marvelous would sit between enrichment when asked, however found breathwork difficult and would jump on the handler if not reinforced immediately. Handler went back to LATTE to end the session on a positive note. She was easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 5/25/25: Marvelous is observed to be banging on her kennel door as the room is being cleaned. Marvelous was then offered an enrichment item to refocus her, and her kennel glass towards the bottom of the door is smeared with feces. 05/22/25 (Trainer Note): Marvelous greeted the trainer at the front of her kennel with a loose wiggly body. She grabbed a toy and held it in her mouth whilst she was leashed and carried it to the Live Room. Upon entry she got very excited and began to jump on the handler. Marvelous began to engage with the enrichment and was able to sit before the trainer gave her a snuffle mat. Marvelous finds it difficult to focus on one enrichment item at the a time so the trainer picked up the puzzles and snuffle mats and gave her the licki mat. Marvelous hears a bang in the corridor and barks and fixates on the door. She was redirected with treats which she took gently and was able to be guided to the licki mat which she focusses on. The trainer introduces the snuffle mat and marvelous can engage with the snuffle mat but is unable to orient to the trainer. Marvelous is noticeably calmer and is safely returned to her kennel.

Summary (6):: 05/20/25 (trainer note): Marvelous was standing at the front of her kennel with a loose frame. She is easily leashed and walked to the live room. She was kept on leash due to not wearing a collar. Her body was loose and wiggly as she enthusiastically jumped on the handler. She was able to engage with enrichment items and handler reinforced her calm behavior as she decompressed. When walking through the meet and greet room to return to her kennel, she pulled and hard barked at the surrounding dogs in crates. 05/17/25: Marvelous is standing at the front of her kennel and picks up a fluffy toy, retreating to the back of her kennel and shaking it while avoiding the leash. Handler patiently waits with the lead positioned, and once she finishes playing, the lead is gently dropped over her head. Marvelous is then escorted out for an enrichment walk. While outside, she hard pulls on leash as she sniffs and explores her environment. Marvelous will hard bark at two other resident dogs across the street, but continues walking without further issue. During the walk, the handler pets Marvelous on her head and back, to which she responds with a loose and wiggly body. She is rewarded with a handful of treats. Once the session has ended, Marvelous is brought back to the care center and returned to her kennel safely. 05/07/25: Marvelous behavior remains consistent. Please refer to previous note dated 04/22/25 for more details. 04/29/25 Marvelous is standing in front of her kennel door with a loose, wiggly frame, being leashed with ease. Marvelous is taken outside to the play pens. Marvelous maintains a loose, wiggly frame as she trots her way to the play pen. Marvelous has a drag leash placed onto her and the handler allows her to free roam. Marvelous will explore the pen and engage with toys that are left in the play pen. Marvelous runs around the pen, jumping onto the handler playfully. After some time, Marvelous is returned to the facility. Marvelous will enter the building as well as her kennel with no issue.

Summary (7):: 04/22/25: Marvelous greets the handler standing in front of her kennel door with a loose frame. Marvelous is easily leashed and escorted out of the care center to the play yards. When in the yard Marvelous will spend their time soliciting attention from the handler and accepting pets on her head and neck. After some time Marvelous was back to her kennel where she was safely secured. 04/11/25 (playgroup): Marvelous is standing at the front of kennel with a loose frame as handler approaches. As the door is cracked open, Marvelous begins to jump up and dig at the lead. Handler waits for her to have four on the floor and she is leashed with ease. Marvelous pulls mildly out to the yard for playgroup (see Dog-Dog Summary for further details). Marvelous is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. She shows high levels of arousal, excessively jumping up onto handler, nipping at their sleeves, with wide dilated eyes. A second handler distracts her with a treat through the fence and she is leashed with ease, returning to kennel safely. 04/08/25 (assessment): Marvelous is jumping up on the kennel door as handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and pulls mildly to the Canine Behavior Office for assessment (see Behavior Assessment for further details). When Marvelous enters the office and sees the assessor, she gets loose and wiggly and will pull over to them jumping up onto them excitedly. Marvelous is collared, clipped to a drag lead, and free to explore the space. Marvelous shows high levels of social hyperarousal and will jump up onto handlers excessively, mouths their hands, and whines. She does engage with a soft toy throughout her time in the room. After assessment, Marvelous is leashed and returns to kennel safely. 4/7: During the night shift (after 7PM), a handler is passing one of the kennel room,s and they can hear a persistent banging noise. When they locate the room and check the kennels to find the source, they see Marvelous banging and digging at her kennel door, while standing on the glass. She is panting heavily and begins wailing when she sees the handler approach. As the handler is leaving for the day, they cannot offer any items to redirect her.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the Marvelous Potential challenge, we recommend that she is placed in an adult-only home at this time.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control/Social hyperarousal/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Marvelous has a low threshold for arousal, becoming overly excited quickly, especially when stimulated by the environment or interactions with handlers. Training to help her manage her arousal levels and teaching her to remain calm in various situations will be essential for her well-being. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control/Social hyperarousal/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Anxiety: Marvelous began to display heavy panting and whining during her assessment. Managing her anxiety will require creating a calm environment, providing enrichment activities, and using stress-reducing techniques like puzzle toys and regular exercise. Please see handout on generalized anxiety.
