KNOWN HISTORY:: Splitzy was brought in with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment. She previously lived with 13+ cats and 3 small dogs.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 7/6/26 FB47 Splitzy was hunched in the back of the cubby, appearing somewhat fearful with her tail wrapped around her body, and did not sniff treats. When approached a second time with a squeeze-up, she gave a low growl. Some squeeze-up was left for her, and the interaction was then ended. 7/7/26 FB73 Splitzy is laying in the back of her bottom cubby, eyes wide, pupils dilated, body tense, and pressing herself against the back wall. When petting is attempted with the scratcher tool, she is able to be very briefly pet on the head with the tool before quickly hissing repeatedly and swatting. Interaction ended to reduce stress. 7/8/26 Vol. Splitzy was curled up sleeping at back of cubby. She looked up when offered treats on scratcher tool but did not eat the treats. Her eyes were squinty, with large pupils. She pressed her body into back corner of cubby to avoid petting with scratcher tool. After a few moments, her body became less tense, and she rested her head on her paws. 7/10/26 Vol. Sitting comfortably in bottom cubby, paws tucked and out, eyes 1/2 closed. Ignored treat bowl in cubby. Approached with hard treat on tool, Splitzy pulled back a bit and lip licked. Dropped treat and approached with tool, she pulled back but settled back down, allowing head scratches with tool, body tense, eyes 1/2 closed, no reaction when stopped. Moved tool to try cheek rub, she pulled back quickly and swatted the tool twice, fairly hard and looked at cubby entry as if to leave. Instead, she sat back down, uncomfortable. Allowed head scratches with tool, but still tense. Only gave a few and ended interaction. 7/11/26 Vol. Lying down with body facing the side wall and head looking towards the front when approaching and door opened. Offered dry treats on scratcher tool and left treats nearby. Ignored treats. tried to pet with scratcher tool and leaned back against wall. Offered a tiny bit of tuna and Churu in a tray. Ignored. Went into main part of condo, then back into cubby. 7/12/26 FB73 Splitzy is laying in the back of her bottom cubby, body tense, pupils dilated, and averting her eyes when the cubby door is opened. Treats are offered but she does not respond to them. A squeeze up is offered on the scratcher tool and she tenses further, not showing interest. Petting is attempted with the scratcher tool and although she is tolerant of some petting on the head with the tool, she leans away to avoid contact and does not engage.

Potential challenges comments:: Splitzy should be given a slow introduction to the home, one room at a time starting in a small room like a bathroom with food, litter and water. Interact with her in this room until she seems sufficiently confident that you feel you can introduce her to the next part of the home without running the risk that she will hide. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to help introduce your cat to the home. Splitzy has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Splitzy would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment. Splitzy may benefit from being in a home with another, friendly, and appropriately socialized cat from whom she can learn behaviors and have interactions with humans modeled by, to help him/her gain confidence and comfort in a new environment

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 6/28/26 Splitzy was lying in her den with dilated eyes and forward ears. She sniffed the treats offered to her but showed no further interest in them. When petting along her head and back with the click stick, she shifted further into the back of her den, her tail now wrapped around her legs. When adding slight pressure to her chest and side to simulate pick up, she let out a hiss and began low growling. The interaction was ended to reduce FAS. 7/28/26 Splitzy is in her cubby with flattened ears and dilated eyes. The assessor speaks softly to her and slowly extends a scratcher tool for her to sniff. Splitzy immediately strikes the tool and bats at it several times, hissing. She continues to avoid all contact, quickly backing up further into the kennel and lip licking. When the tool is removed slowly she strikes it again. Splitzy is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She is very apprehensive of people, and she may attempt to flee and avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if she will respond to socialization, but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people.
