Animal Profile

Luffy

Hello, my name is Luffy. My animal id is #238409. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/1/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - pregnant.

Luffy is at risk due to behavior concerns. Luffy came into the care center as an owner surrender. During his time in the care center, it has been reported that Luffy is mouthy when seeking treats, will jump on handlers with a soft body and wagging tail and will mount handlers not easily being redirected. Owner has reported Luffy will bark and growl if startled. Luffy is social with handlers and is receptive to treats. Owner has reported Luffy knows verbal cues, is loving and playful. Luffy also enjoys car rides and is crate trained. Medically, Luffy has dermatitis - unspecified and otitis chronic.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! A Volunteer Wrote: Luffy was beloved by his former owner, who said he was playful and friendly with the child with whom he lived, as well as unknown children; the same went with other dogs and humans of all kinds. Luffy is winning hearts here, as well; despite being in a pop up crate against the wall, he makes friends by offering kisses through the bars until someone relents and plays with him. Luffy is looking for his forever playmate and a life not lived in a crate--please come meet him! My #BoroughBreak Buddy Writes: Luffy is a true city dog who is unfazed by the sights and sounds of city streets. The only thing that scared him was a life size cow statue that stopped him in his tracks. Once we crossed the street, he didn't show any fearful back-glances and was his normal happy self. Luffy will thrive in a calm home with an active owner. If that's you, you are going to get an exceptionally sweet, exceptionally loyal and loving dog in return.

Summary:: 11/6/25: Luffy greets another dog at the gate with a soft body and 'helicopter tail'. When the other dog moves away quickly along the fence line, Luffy is slightly more tense and hackles raise.

Summary (5):: 12/23/25: Luffy is at the front with a loose body and wagging tail. He is easily leashed and taken out if the crate. Luffy pulls moderately down the hall and towards the street. He walks ahead of the handler with mild pulling. He will sit and wait at the handler's feet upon command when waiting to cross the street. He takes treats firmly. Luffy spots a dog ahead of him. The other dog growls and vocalizes loudly towards Luffy. Luffy looks to the dog tense with a forward posture and tries to pull towards the other dog. Handler uses directional leash pressure to break Luffy's line of sight and he follows the handler across the street. Luffy relives himself a few times and checks in with handler for treats. He ignores people that pass by him. Luffy is then walked back to the shelter and is returned to his crate without issue.

Summary (6):: 12/8/25: Luffy is at the front of the kennel with a soft body. He is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel. The leash goes over his body and goes around his abdomen upon exit. He greets the handler with a soft body and jumps up on them in a social manner. Handler has Luffy sit and puts another leash over his head letting the tangled leash fall off by itself. Luffy is then walked down the hall. He jumps on a familiar handler with a soft body and wagging tail. Handler calls him away and tosses treats. He pulls mildly out to the street. Luffy relieves himself a few times. He walks with a soft body on the street besides the handler, stopping to sniff and relieve himself. Luffy is then brought back into the shelter. and picks up a non food object, handler say "drop it" and he drops it out of his mouth. Luffy is given a treat. He is brought to his crate and walks into his crate before handler pre-clips his leash. Handler calls him out and pre-clips the leash. Handler tells him to "go inside" he is returned without issue. 12/1/25: Luffy is siting in his crate as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and is taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he would pull hard ahead while trying to stop at each tree to explore. He is comfortable approaching the handler and would sit for treats. He would take the treats roughly and the handler then offers them by tossing them on the ground. He pulls hard on the way back to his crate and is able to enter with no issues. 11/28/25: Luffy is laying in his pop up crate but stands and comes to the front when handler approaches. He takes treats hard through the bars of the crate. He is easily leashed using a treat as a lure. He pulls hard ahead of handler once out of the crate. handler is able to direct him to the side as another dog comes out of the elevator using treats and he does not react to the dog whose crate we are standing near. In the elevator he will sit initially for treats but then jumps up on handler. He is redirected down and a treat is tossed due to taking treats roughly. He is walked on the street walking slightly ahead of handler light pulling on the leash. He passes people without a reaction and when a dog stops a few feet ahead he stands near handler soft body, sniffing around. A MOP attempts to approach Luffy, his tail is low, while wagging, body a little low. The MOP moves away without approaching. Luffy returns to kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 11/23/25: Luffy is at the front of the crate with a soft body. He is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel. Luffy is taken downstairs and is walked to the street. On the street, Luffy walks slightly ahead of the handler with a loose body. He is pulling mildly. He relieves himself a few times and stops to sniff various areas on the ground before he is walked back to the shelter. Luffy is then walked back inside and is returned to his crate without issue. 11/22/25: Luffy is reported to mount a staff member when they handled him. He is non-redirectable, so the staff member straight-armed their leash to remove Luffy from them. 11/17/25- Luffy is standing at the back of his kennel with a soft body, he comes to the front and is easily leashed. He is taken for a street walk and walks on a loose leash with moderately pulling towards spots to sniff. He checks in with handler periodically throughout the walk and is rewarded. He automatically sits when handler stops walking, he gently takes more treats. He has no reaction to any stimuli. When returning in the elevator handler scratches his side and he leans into their legs. He is easily returned to his pop up crate without issue. 11/9/25: Luffy at the front of the crate with a soft body. He is easily leashed and taken out of the crate and brought to the street. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Luffy so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to mouthie behavior, poor impulse control and reported fearful behaviors in the home we recommend an adult only home.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Luffy has been obsvered to jump up on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Mouthiness: Luffy has been obsvered to mouth handlers hands while on walks. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy, and ending play or attention whenever Luffy puts teeth on skin. They should be rewarded with attention and treats when they stop and/or when they are seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful Defensive: Luffy's previous owner states that he will bark and growl when startled. It is important to move slowly with Luffy, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Low threshold for arousal: During a brough break, Luffy was reported to have mounted the borough breaker for an hour and a half, ignoring all treats and toys. Positive reinforcement should be used to help Luffy learn impulse control. Please see the handout on Arousal.
