Summary:: When brought into the assessment room Ms. Pretty Penny was observed to be tense and fearful. Noted to have a tense body and tucked tail. The handler offers treats and Penny is receptive. However, she retreats quickly after eating treats. When the handler presents the dragline and attempts to clip to her collar, Penny retreats quickly with a tucked tail and does not reapproach the handler. The handler attempts to coax her with treats and Penny remains avoidant of the handler and begins to pull towards the door of the office. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety displayed. Penny is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time.
Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 10/1/26: Ms. Pretty Penny is introduced to a novel intact male and approaches the fence with a tense lowered body and low tail, sniffing the other dog nose to nose through the fence with an outstretched neck and head. She follows the other dog along the fence line when they approach handlers, then continues sniffing nose to nose while the other dog solicits play through the fence. She disengages and explores the catch pen, not reapproaching.
Summary (6):: 10/14/26: Ms. Pretty Penny is standing in front of her pop-up crate with lowered head when handler approaches. She is easily leashed and taken out of the crate. Pretty walks alongside the handler with no pulling in the hallways and has no reaction to other crates or staff members. She leans onto handler's legs in elevator. Her body is slightly lowered. Once outside, Pretty continues walking on the loose leash slightly ahead of the handler. She is constantly scanning her surroundings and changing directions during the walk. She tolerates petting and is treat-motivated but does not seek additional attention herself. She has no reaction to any stimuli on the street. Upon return handler clips the leash and brings Ms. Pretty Penny back into her crate with ease.
Summary (7):: 10/6/26: Ms. Pretty Penny is sitting at the front of her crate with a neutral body; she is easily leashed and brought out the room. Penny sniffs the handler, but stands away from her. Pretty walks behind the handler, and stops; with a little coaxing, she continues the walk, but this behavior is repeated a few more time. Penny is brought inside for her assessment, but it is ended early to reduce FAS. When the assessor attempts to place a dragline on her collar, Penny retreats; the assessor gives her treats, which she eats, but she continue to avoid them. After these attempts, the handler walks Penny to her crate; as she approaches, she pulls inside and the handler removes their leash. 10/1/26: Ms. Pretty Penny is sitting at the front of her crate with a trembling body; she is leashed and brought out the room. While waiting for the elevator, Pretty is seemingly anxious, as she paces back and forth. She is brought outside to the yard for playgroup (see notes). Pretty is brought back to her crate; she runs into it and stays in the back; the handler removes the leash with ease. 9/28/26: Ms. Pretty Penny is at the front of her crate with a neutral body where she was easily leashed and taken for a brief street walk before her assessment. While walking she lightly pulled with a neutral body. Penny had no display of reactivity to the dogs or people that she passed. A lady went by with an umbrella and Penny dropped low to the ground with a tucked tail when she saw the umbrella, she recovered quickly and continued on with walk. During assessment she was very afraid with a tucked tail and walking slightly lower to the ground. Assessment was ended due to her fearfulness. She was returned to kennel with no issue. 9/27/26: Ms. Pretty Penny is at the front of her pop-up crate with slightly lowered body when handler approaches. Handler offers a treat and she gently takes it. Penny is leashed and taken out of the crate with no issues. She slowly walks alongside the handler through the hallways with lowered head. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Ms. Pretty Penny so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior, we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Penny has been observed to be tense and fearful while in care. Noted to flinch for stimuli such as a MOP opening an umbrella. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Penny would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period.
